I interviewed Maria Siemionow, the Polish physician who served as lead surgeon in the first near-total face transplant in December 2008 at the Cleveland Clinic, for the June 2010 Continental Airlines magazine. In her small but very interesting book, Face to Face, she recounts a brief, but fascinating history of plastic surgery (leave it to the Renaissance Italians), her journey from Poznan, Poland medical student to renowned microsurgeon and researcher, the criteria for the optimal transplant candidate (lots of surprises here) and her quest to tame the immune system's natural response to transplanted organs.
