The Cribbs are botanists of such wide experience in the “bush” of Australia. You name it, they’ve described it for its taste, its non-gustatory uses, any of its dangers or off-puttings, and its links with the history of both Aborigines and European explorers. The pictures are beautiful. The text is definitely not dry, with many wry observations, smiles and nose-wrinklings in print. They tell you where to find it, which tells the reader that they really know how to travel in the bush. I loved the notes they cite of famed, persevering, ebullient, and finally doomed explorer Ludwig Leichhardt, up for trying anything and listening to the original inhabitants.
