A thriller from Susanna Kearsley?! Not something I ever expected. Admittedly, I'm very picky when it comes to thrillers so this was only fine for me.
Kate is a Canadian journalist over in London to cover a serial killer trial when she becomes embroiled in a cover-up dating back to WWII. Soon she's on the run for her life as she figures out what happened in Lisbon during the war. I'm generally over WWII stories but I enjoyed learning about the espionage service in Lisbon. While this had a dual timeline like most of Kearsley's novels, the POV transitions were quite clunky and could be jarring. The pacing was all over the place and I didn't feel invested until the last thirty percent. However, this did directly tackle ageism, which I found refreshing and unexpected.
This was originally published under the name Emma Cole. I'm not sure why Kearsley used a pen name at first and now claims it as hers. This is very different from her usual fare and while it was interesting to try something different from her, it pales in comparison to her other work.
