Ellen W. Leroe grew up writing fairy tales in northern New Jersey. After graduating from Elmira College, in New York State, she worked as a fashion buyer. But she soon returned to her original love, writing.
Ellen moved to San Francisco and began working on novels while working at various administrative and editorial positions. When her first Young Adult novel was published in 1983, she became a full-time writer.
Thirty of her children’s books have been published since then, and Ellen has also created a greeting card line, won poetry awards, and lent song lyrics to a jazz CD. Writing continues to be her passion and chief form of entertainment. She lives in San Francisco.
Aly Cat is a girl with a big attitude who's outspoken and becomes easily upset when things don't go her way. She retaliates when treated poorly and requires extra attention from her first grade teacher. When paired with a boy she doesn't like for a report, she is angry and convinced that she cannot work with the boy. With help from her family and teacher, Aly Cat is able to work through her problems and find resolutions.
Aly Cat is dealing with some friend issues. Her best friend refuses to sit by her in class and now they are not talking. All Ali wants is to be friends and have fun in the first grade. I would love to use this book in a classroom dealing with differences. I would also use this book for when my students don't seem to get along. It's a great transitional-chapter book for young readers.
