Corrupt Cupid #4

Be Mine, Heartless Valentine

Rate this book
What started off as nothing more than a product to them quickly became everything to me.

Each Friday is the same. I drive a borrowed truck to a warehouse to pick up a delivery. The back of the truck stays locked at all times, and I never look inside no matter what. These are the rules I must follow without any mishaps.

Nothing can go wrong. Until it does.

The curiosity I usually fight against ends up winning when I'm stranded in the middle of nowhere. Something calls my attention to the back of the truck and once I cut the lock, there's no turning back. I can no longer lie to myself when I finally see what I've been delivering.

One look at the frightened, beautiful man crawling out of the dark, and all the rules are shot to hell, and so is the promise of my family's safety. I can't walk away no matter how hard I try. The heartless man I've allowed myself to become in order to keep my loved ones safe now feels too much, and I can no longer finish what I started.

Is Paxton really worth the risk? Can I keep him safe from the men who are after us. Most importantly, can I protect him from myself? It won't stop me from trying. They want him and will keep coming until they get what they're after.

Him and everyone else keep forgetting one very important detail, the only person he belongs to, is me.

Be mine, Heartless Valentine is part of a multi-author collab. Ditch the hearts and flowers and step into the dark world of Corrupt Cupid. Each book can be read as a standalone, but why not grab each and every deranged romantic tale as you slip into a place where darkness rules?

This book is about two men who are less likely to fall in love who are forced to need and want each other after getting hit by Cupid's arrow.

"I may have lost the game but I won the best prize, and I'm definitely, without a doubt, keeping it all for myself."

Be Mine, Heartless Valentine by Ashlynn Mills is another fun addition to the Corrupted Cupid series! We have Paxton, who has a rough start to life. Losing his family, going through the foster care system, only to end up with the father who abandoned them initially. When a camping trip with his boyfriend goes wrong, he ends up being trafficked, and the man whose job was to deliver him ends up being not only his saviour but the one who will end up owning his heart.

Ezra is entangled with very dangerous men working as a driver to drop off “produce” as he works to clear off the debt his sister has gotten into thanks to her deadbeat boyfriend. When he realizes his cargo this time isn’t drugs or the usual but a young man, well, things change.

This story was pretty insta attraction/insta love between the two. Ezra starts to realize he might not be as straight as he thought when it comes to Paxton. I enjoyed the sexual chemistry and possessiveness between Paxton and Ezra. I liked that he was willing to do everything and anything to protect Paxton. While their relationship did progress very, very fast, it was not a negative for me. However I do imagine that it might not be a lot of people’s cup of tea.

There are appearances of characters from other works by Ashlynn Mills. There is also a lot jammed into a shorter story and I would say if the story was longer that would have helped out with it.

Overall it was a fun, twisted, and action-filled read. While I would say this story is not dark dark , there is violence, attempted sexual assault and human trafficking, so please check trigger warnings.

I hate to give such bad reviews, but this was just bad. I love dark violent books, I also have no problem with most of the abuse. Therefore, my rating has nothing to do with the fact that this book has a plot that made me want to run away screaming. It took me months to get through it, but that's just not the reason.
I hate the presentation of the characters. They are heartless as the title indicates, even though they are not. But the way they are described makes me relate to them absolutely zero. I initially put it down to the plot just making any sympathy for this book slip away and told myself I just have to hang in there, it will work out.
Nope, unfortunately it didn't.

The holes that are in this plot were just unbearable. A lot of it was illogical to me.
The action in the second half of the book is quite bad, it's just bloody, but the actual story is completely missing here. The bad guys just get what they deserve, just like that ... 😕

Something like lust develops between Paxton and Ezra, insta is ok for me, but the circumstances make it more than unbelievable. I don't want to talk about love here, even the epilogue wasn't the least bit convincing for me. 😒

As for the "relationship" ... oh boy.
Paxton is someone who has been abused multiple times, who has trouble with normal touch. That's one of the few things that's clear from the beginning that made me stick with it in the first place. I wanted to know how he survives, how he can feel anything after all he's been through.
Well and this is where sex comes in, as we go from zero touch to dirty kink enriched sex. Nope, just nope. 😠

Oh, and finally we have to learn that Paxton is mentally unhealthy ... big surprise here, but it's not elaborated. 😡

DNF @ 51%. I don't feel a connection between the two men. It feels forced and rushed and stilted, so I'm throwing in the towel. By the reviews I am lone ranger because everyone seems to love this story. It must be me and not the book. *shrug*

So in this story we have Ezra who is protecting his family by doing work transporting “produce” he don’t realise or chooses to ignore the cargo in his truck, until the voice inside him wins and he opens it to find a man bound in the corner.

Paxton had a rough upbringing and went through the foster care system till he went back to his father, he’s dealing with past trauma and keeps people at arms length even his boyfriend. When they go on a camping trip he has a feeling something isn’t right, next thing he wakes up and he’s in a trunk.

This is the 4th book in the series. It was a bit harder for me to connect to these two, but I’ve not read anything by Ashlynn before so maybe it’s just a me problem!!

It’s a dark story about trafficking, trauma, trust issues, age gap and forced proximity.

Triggers warnings are there for a reason if you’re sensitive read them if you’re not then go in blind!!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

This was an odd one. It was actually pretty well-written from a prose standpoint, and I empathized with Paxton’s grief and fear at the beginning. But once he encounters Ezra, the connection that forms is not only instant, but implausible. Ezra has never once looked at another man, and Paxton has never wanted to be touched, but literally within hours, they’re all over each other. I barely even knew these characters, and I already knew this was out of character. And when they decide to get their revenge, it’s unsatisfying and all I could think was there was definitely a better way to do this; the methods used are going to cause way too much collateral damage. But if there were repercussions we wouldn’t get our HEA, which we do. An interesting revelation about a main character’s mental health is made towards the end that probably should have been a bigger deal, but alas, we get the one year later this person is magically cured. I didn’t really enjoy the other book I read by this author, so maybe they’re just not a good fit for me, since other reviewers seemed to enjoy this.

This story was so confusing.
2⭐ for Paxton.

I waited until 84% to finally find something interesting and it lasted for only about 3 pages.

Paxton is 19 and gay, out on a trip with his boyfriend when he's being drugged and kidnapped to be sold.

Ezra is 40 and from a very close hispanic family, he's the guy doing the delivery, who opens the van where Paxton is being held and sees him, frees him despite knowing he's going to put his entire family in jeopardy.

With not having any particular goal in mind, they're just driving around while Ezra is experiencing his first time with a man.

Yes, exactly, with Paxton, who is kidnapped and tied up in vehicles for days, he stinks, he doesn't eat for days, he's completely traumatized, and yet, Ezra experiences his bi-awakening with this poor guy.

Their connection and chemistry wasn't palpable.

Perry is a really traumatized person who's had a terrible life and as it turns out, was sexually abused and is also a mental patient, so for him to go on without any kind of medicine and also just surrender himself sexually and emotionally to Ezra, just like that, wasn't even remotely believable.

Ezra is supposed to be the good guy, looking out for his family and having a heart, that's why he opens that door and saves Paxton, but all of a sudden Ezra is this cold blooded killer and he can get away with eeeeeverything, I mean, this guy is so bad at covering his tracks that it amazes me how he can, at the end of the book, come back home and live a happy, carefree life with no cops or Mafia after him .

This was supposed to be a supernatural valentine , right? Well, let me tell you, those voices Ezra kept hearing were confusing and made absolutely no sense.
At first I thought it was the dead twin brother navigating the situation, but it wasn't, the whole thing wasn't even explained.
I still have no idea what that was.

There is so much unfinished business in this book that I really can't root for the MCs, because although they stay together and Paxton gets his Person in Ezra, it really wasn't executed in a way for me to think that this is the resolve Paxton needed and now he can finally live in peace.

🟢 His mental health wasn't addressed and it was quite a big deal.

🔵 His grandpa was abusing him and there were 2 sentences about that, I mean come on, that's a big deal to swallow, I was amazed it wasn't addressed more.

🟡 His dad. I had no idea what kind of role was he playing in Paxton's life, I felt it was completely unnecessary he was there.

🟠 What happened with the sex trafficking ring? Noone came to retaliate? They just forgot about Paxton?

🔴 How can someone who's so troubled just have sex with him being a virgin and still kidnapped? He was avoiding touching his whole life and then he just jumped on Ezra's dick like there's no tomorrow.

I have no problem with things being twisted, but this wasn't, this was just sad.

I felt terrible for Paxton and I think we needed more of his story, of his past and of everything that lead him to Eddie, before we even started taking Ezra into the equation.

I think the story could be turned around and made into a really interesting one if certain aspects weren't so insanely ridiculous and undeveloped.

It would have made much more sense if Ezra would really be a bad guy, completely involved in the trafficking and then changing his mind.

Needless to say, this didn't work for me.

Overall Opinion
Wow this book was twisted and suspenseful and really well written! The MCs, Paxton and Ezra, really drew me in and I couldn't help but be pulled into their story. It was dark and spicy and very full on for a novella, but in a good way. It was very insta-love and I enjoyed the possessiveness that came from the MCs. It was also very plot-based so you were able to almost picture the happenings in your head clearly as the book went along. Overall this was a fun, darker read that was a great palette cleanser within the series!

Read if you like:
❣️ MM Romance
❣️ Bi-Awakening
❣️ Age Gap
❣️ Forced Proximity
❣️ Possessive MC
❣️ Insta Love

Trigger and Content Warnings: Kidnapping, dubcon, sleep sex, bondage, light knife play, sex trafficking, SA from side characters, drugs, murder, mentions of past abuse.

3.5 stars. Fluffy dark is a pretty decent description for this book. I enjoyed the beginning and the last section but the middle was sadly not as good. Both characters were surprisingly sweet underneath the morally grey parts. The whispering Cupid bit didn't really add anything to the story for me. I do particularly like what the two MCs wound up doing, that also really fit both characters.

Read for a group challenge week 7. I binge read books 2-5 so whereas this one was initially alright, it fell between the cracks with the other books. Focused on trafficking. The couple was okay but it felt more because of the circumstances than anything. I did like how Ez went to get him back, other than that I didn't get much from these two.

It wasn't bad exactly.. Mostly just.. meh.
I know there's supposed to be a "supernatural cupid" but that whole concept is just so underdeveloped and barely used, it makes no sense, and it fits very ill with the rest of the story who isn't supernatural at all.

So their whole fast developing connection doesn't feel very natural or earned. I've read tons of kidnapping stories where you actually buy the whole Stockholm syndrome thing, and you can feel the sparks and the tension between the characters. Here it mostly just felt forced and fake.

And once their "connection" was made, their whole dynamic is weird. In these kind of stories, you kind of want the top to be all confident Alpha and badass, but he is none of those things. He isn't weak either, but he's just a regular guy.

Its very hard to understand what the bottom sees in him. Usually its security, because it's clear he's someone who can handle themselves and take care of you, but he doesn't fit that mould. Also he is barely described, so you almost don't know what he looks like, and the bottom never comments on his hotness, so no sexual tension is built that way either.

And I suppose you could argue that it's brave to try a new thing, but the thing is, that's not what you want in a story like this. When you read a kidnapping story, you want a badass rock you can lean on so you feel safe, someone who orders you around a little so you can settle.

Even if he pretends to be that for a short while, that's not who he is, and their whole dynamic just feels off. There's no power exchange at all, and I mostly just feel robbed, because that's what you want out of a story like this.

And all of a sudden from like one scene to the next, they go from kidnapping victim to boyfriends, and it's way too fast, and absolutely unearned.

And after that its mostly just.. Boring, honestly. And I was so deeply disappointed by their first sex scene?!

It starts while the top is asleep, so you miss the beginning of it, and any possible build-up. And then when he wakes up, he is bound and being ridden, and that's the whole scene. It's just so underwhelming and boring. I was hoping for something way hotter.

The shower scene in the beginning showed potential, as did the cock warning scene in the car, but then it was just kind of over, and it feels like they skipped over something that could have been delicious, and just fast forwarded over it?! What a disappointment.
In the end I just lost interest.

But at least it wasn't badly written if that makes sense, even if the plot wasn't very hot or interesting.

Wow where to start
Ezra has been put between a rock and a hard place. He is paying off his sisters debt to a group of men that he knows to be dangerous and having no scruples. He has to drive a van to an address that they give him. there aren’t many rules other than do not touch the lock. You don’t need to know what’s in the van. But this time Ezra can hear something in the back and it makes him really think about what is in there. So he chooses to open the lock.
Paxton‘s life has been a difficult one. He’s living with a father that he doesn’t respect or even like due to letting his mum and brother down. It’s his birthday and he’s going to meet his boyfriend and they’re going camping which he’s not excited about. But when he gets there Eddie explain that he’s got some friends coming he’s just met for a few drinks. Paxton is not impressed but has a few drinks and the next thing he knows he’s waking up nearly naked in the boot of a car. And this is where his nightmare begins. He was told he’s been sold to somebody and then put in the back of a van.
When Ezra sees that it’s a man in the back of the van he knows he can’t carry on to the address. He rings his friend who set up this payment scheme and he’s told that’s the man is a violent killer and to ignore him. But he can’t and this is where the journey together begins. Ezra had always believed he was straight but there is something about this Young man that attracts him. He can’t control his body. So what’s going to happen when they start their journey together??
I enjoyed this book I was addicted to it and read it through the night because I couldn’t put it down. In some ways I wish the book was longer so we got to learn more about their connection. Paxton is such a complex person that for a lot of the book you’re really concerned for him but glad that he has Ezra in his corner. Ezra is totally bold over by Paxton and he will do anything to keep him safe. But is everything as it seems?.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I knew from the blurb that Paxton and Ezra's story would be a wide ride, and that's exactly what they delivered over the course of their journey. Ezra was just a man paying off his sister's debts, but his latest unmarked, unknown delivery was too suspicious to ignore. I already knew what was tied up in the back of his truck, but the suspense of Ezra not knowing really drew me in, and the voice of Cupid urging Ezra on was equal parts alluring and creepy. I felt his shock and horror at seeing Paxton for the first time, and breaking the rules changed everything for the two of them. Paxton and Ezra had sparks of unexpected attraction, but there was a constant war between finishing the job and taking a risk to rescue a complete stranger. I felt as panicked and desperate as Paxton, and the way their emotions waffled back and forth made for a captivating and unpredictable storyline. After some insanely steamy sexy times and listening to the little voice in the back of his head urging him to keep Paxton forever, Ezra made a pivotal decision that sent the last section of the book into full revenge-mode. The action and surprises came one after the other, but despite how new their connection was, Paxton and Ezra made me believe they were committed and ready to run off to their next adventure together.

**I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.

🖤➵🥀➵❣ 𝓡𝓮𝓿𝓲𝓮𝔀 ❣➵🥀➵🖤

I was lucky enough to Beta read for Be Mine, Heartless Valentine and it's no secret that I'm obsessed with Ashylnn's writing style. So imagine my excitement at getting to help with this little baby. I love how Ashylnn is never one to hold back from bloody horror in her dark romance books. I love delighting in the gruesome scenes Ashylnn conjures up for her readers. Heartless still has an abundance of shock worthy moments but what I really enjoyed was the build of the story and the perpetual uneasiness/dread that follows around our main character Paxton. He was definitely a bit of a hard nut to crack and there was always a sense of something more to his character. I adored Ezra, he was just your average all round good guy! When we first meet Ezra, he's between a rock and a hard place... He really is just trying to make the best of bad situation, but more fool anybody who dares take Paxton from him. Even good guys can have the baddest intentions when threatened with something they love. Be Mine, Heartless Valentine had more thriller-esque/psychological aspects to it. I loved that there was a bunch of intriguing characters to try unpick along the way and a certain interfering Cupid running the show. I really recommend Ashylnn's part in the Corrupt Cupid collection and I'm really looking forward to the other stories, I'm actually reading Be Mine, Bloody Valentine now and I'm definitely in my element with these Valentine deadly treats.

💛Yellow represents hope and sunshine. It'll help you find the light whenever darkness surrounds you

"His puzzle pieces had sharp edges and deep curves. It was hard to not want to crawl between the spaces."

"You're unpredictable, destructive, hard to look away from, and I don't know if I should come close to you or distance myself."

"We sometimes go down the wrong path in order to find the right one. We both took wrong turns and still ended up right here with each other."

This was another fantastic read in this series. This one was pretty dark, so check the TWs first. This story had some good steam and the plot kept me engaged the whole time. I loved the twist on Cupid in this.

This story follows Ezra and Paxton. Paxton is camping with his bf and ends up in the back of someone's trunk. From there, things get super dark. Ezra is driving a truck with no idea what he is transporting. He hears this voice to open the hatch even though it's against the rules. He ends up finding Paxton and things go crazy from there. I loved their connection and chemistry 🥵🥵. Despite what happened to Paxton, he was a bratty and snarky guy, lol. My heart hurt for him as he has gone through so much and continues to go through the ringer. Ezra was such a hero and I loved how protective he was of Pax. The ending of this was spectacular and had me smiling. Loved the twists in this story as well. Highly recommend! 🖤💛🖤💛

Every Friday Ezra drives a truck to a warehouse, collects product and delivers it to his given address. It stays locked at all times and he knows not to look inside no matter what. Paxton was with his boyfriend when he was abducted and trafficked. Then one Friday Ezra is stranded in the middle of nowhere and something calls his attention to the back of the truck - when he cuts the lock he finds a frightened Paxton and his resolve to follow the rules even if it means his family's safety is shot to hell. Is Paxton really worth the risk and can Ezra keep them safe from the men who will be after them?

I found this a difficult story to follow with the identity issues, the uncertainty and the loose way they were in a relationship (or were they?). I did enjoy the story about the abduction, the discovery and the sanctuary but I did get confused. I also found the ending a little rushed too. I've enjoyed the previous three books in this series but just did not feel it for this one. This is an MM story with some mature content.

Heartless Valentine

First let me start off my saying Ashlynn was right when she called this fluffy Dark. This was the sweetest dark book I have ever read and I loved every minute of it. Paxton was kidnapped on his birthday of all days on a camping trip with his boyfriend. Ezra has been tasked to deliver Paxton to work off a debt. But something isn't right and a little voice wants him to protect Paxton the best he can.
Not only if this fluffy dark (lol) its always gay for you and I absolutely love it! I loved that some characters from a previous book made an appearance!
I was not expecting that plot twist at the end, holy cheese that was fuego!
One of my favorite quotes from this book is: "You're unpredictable, destructive, hard to look away from, and I don't know if I should come close to you or distance myself."
Along with: "you brought this on yourself"

Loved It

Perry is a naive young man who goes camping with his boyfriend and winds up tied up in the back of a truck to be sex trafficked. Ezra is trying to keep his family safe by making deliveries for a bad man. He's told not to ever look in the back but today he starts to hear voices telling him to just take a look. When he discovers Perry he knows he's in trouble but the voices tell him to help Perry. They both feel this strange attraction to each other despite the dire circumstances they each face. I loved the way the story unfolded and despite being kidnapped, Perry was very mouthy once he was riding up front with Ezra. Lots of unexpected twists that kept me on the edge of my seat. I've enjoyed every book so far in this multi author collaboration. I highly recommend this book.

I have to say this is one of the least wicked / sick part of the series.

However, I couldn't click with the characters. Lots of rushed scenes, vague deep thoughts that sprout abruptly and lots of vagueness that didn't entice me to enjoy the book more.

The easy way how things proceeded from killing the capturers and Rodrigo who has been taunting Ez for months seemed too smooth and unrealistic.

The instalove and switch to gay love was a tad too much.

The 20years age difference that wasn't mentioned once was a bit unnatural.

The burner phones used and the easiness to locate it by his dad was a bit weird.

Lots of other small things that didn't add up, that made me not enjoy the book.

Most of all I felt that it was rushed too fast jumping from one scene to another.

DNF @42% ... ugh. I wanted this to be good, and it just isn't. I can enjoy a darker romance, but I need a ROMANCE. And ... this is just, yeah. NOT for me. If this was some sort of short porny erotica PWP that was well-written, I could maybe see getting into it. But as a romance? Just no. I think I need to remember from now on that this author's style is not my jam.

Moving on...

I love the premise of Be Mine, Heartless Valentine by Ashlynn Mills. I love the tropes that the story has: kidnapping, human/slave/sex slave trafficking and age gap. I also love dark stories with tons of CWs so I was really excited for this story. But there were some issues. I felt the dialogues weren’t well-developed. And that ties in with the character development. The main characters. Ezra and Perry/Paxton, were one way then changed to a different type of personality that I got whiplashed from understanding their motives. They were just so unrealistic and unbelievable. I also felt the author tried to pack too much into this short story and it felt undeveloped and not connected and just confusing.

The blurb and the trigger warnings says a lot about this story, so I’m not gonna repeat that…

This story held my attention from the start, with its dark theme and the way it’s written. I loved the characters and felt them from the start. My heart ached, I wanted cold showers and I definitely felt my heart speed up from the happenings in this story as well!

It’s a story on the shorter side, and I’m impressed about how the author has managed to fit everything in without rushing it, at least that’s how I felt about it 💛

This is my first book by the author, and I’m really curious about the rest of her books now. Her way with words, and her ability to make me feel the characters made me intrigued!

If dark themes aren’t your jam, this book isn’t for you 💛

Be Mine, Heartless Valentine will have on edge!!! This is a force proximity, bi-awakening, age gap, forced proximity romance, and involve kidnapping, this book was a little twisted annd suspenseful, I was pulled immediately into the story, Paxton and Ezra story was dark, possessive and steamy. Paxton went trough so much as a kid and he is a little detached, his relationship with his father was not good and he is kidnapped and about to be delivered, but Ezra “rescued” him and both are draw to each other and Ezra is going to try and save him but it’s going to be easy. I like the dark side of the story and I enjoy it! Great addition to this serie!

Very entertaining and had me all in from start to end. Human trafficking is a ugly reality we live in and this open my eyes to the evil out there. A lot of things happened that I wasn't ready for. Ezra really had me shaking my head and OMGing. Paxton had me in the feels...he was a very tragic character but you wouldn't know it really from the beginning until the night his entire life went to crap. Luckily Ezra was there and "saved" him. It was a lot packed in this bizarre train wreck of a romance but I enjoyed it. The corrupt cupid series seriously had me on roller coaster ride of cray cray love...LOL.

This is the 4th book in this series, and this is Ezra and Paxton’s journey. Ezra is protecting family by transporting “produce”, which he has no idea what his load actually is. Paxton grew up in the foster care system, and while on a camping trip something does not feel ok, and he wakes up in the back of a truck. When Ezra is stranded, something draws him to the back of the truck and he opens it to find Paxton. This is a good story which has family, trauma, forced proximity, an age gap, twists, and love, which leads to an enjoyable tale.

"Stop touching me or I won't know how to go without it when you leave."

Another fantastically dark Valentine's story I was pulled into Paxton and Ezra's adventure from almost the first page. As it progressed it kept getting more complex with secrets everywhere. I can't say much without spoiling them all but I will say I enjoyed every emotional and heart-stopping moment. My only complaint is that once all the secrets came out the story suddenly stopped, picking up a year later, cheating us out of the part in between. Other than that this book is pretty wonderful and I recommend it enthusiastically.

Not So Heartless

When Paxton goes to meet his bf for a camping trip he never thought he’d become a victim of trafficking. Ezra has to take the cargo to its destination he knows the rules never open the back but something makes him and he doesn’t expect a guy to come crawling out . Ezra is spun a load of lies by his friend telling him Paxton is dangerous but Ezra has a hard time believing them and as he gets closer to Paxton he knows the truth is that Paxton was trafficked. With Rodrigo and his men now out to kill Ezra and take Paxton back Ezra has to get to them before they find them as he won’t allow anyone to take Paxton from him .

I want a full length novel

I'm disappointed that this had to be a short-ish story to be a part of the Corrupt Cupid series because I would give anything for more Ezra and Perry.

I have so many unanswered questions.
How old was Perry when he lived with grandpa? How long did he live with him?
Where did Ezra learn to fight like that?
How did Ezra's family react to him being with a man? How did they react to Perry?
Does Joey and his husband have their own story?

Tropes:

Bi-awakening
Age gap (but not age play)
Dubcon
Semi-dark content
Light bondage
