Counting Sheep & Other Stories

Counting Sheep & Other Stories. A Sci-Fi Thriller set in a world where Sleep can be stored in batteries and used when needed, and a small collection of other short stories.

Dr. Matthew Clayton is dead. The co-creator of the revolutionary technology, the Sleep-Battery, was discovered unresponsive in his office at the Rest corporation headquarters from an apparent suicide. It is difficult to understate the profound impact Dr. Clayton’s work has had on daily life- where some people sleep for a living enabling others to constantly stay awake. A Rest corporation spokesman has issued a statement mourning the loss of Dr. Clayton, and assuring users that the sleep banking technology had nothing to do with his death.

Will this fuel fresh criticism from the numerous opponents and conspiracy theorists? What did Dr. Clayton discover that drove him to take his own life? and is the Rest corporation hiding something from us?

Good Morning.

I wanted to be a writer since before I could actually read, when I first started playing a video game called Gabriel Knight Sin of the Father. I thought (and still think) that he was the coolest guy I'd ever seen and I wanted to be him when I grew up. Writer, bookstore in New Orleans, the works.
I live in Berlin now so I didn't get it totally on the mark but I have written and had published 12 books, and very much like Gabriel Knight, without anyone having really noticed. Well not yet anyway.

A wonderful collection of stories in a range of genre.
The main Story Counting sheep takes place in a wonderful world where sleep
can be storied in a battery so you'll never be tired again.
The shorts are also very interesting, and in some cases truly horrifying.
Pinocchio gave me nightmares.

When D.I. Jolly approached me to review Counting Sheep and Other Stories, I was pretty excited. I have reviewed his other books and I have become pretty attached to Syn Island. Knowing that Counting Sheep and Other Stories would be set on Syn Island made me very excited. D.I. Jolly has created a world that gets under your skin. You can’t help but start to care about the characters that live on the island….even if they are evil. Speaking of evil, he has successfully blurred the lines between good and evil in his stories. Those are evil turn out not to be and those that are good, well they end up being the bad guys.

I could go on about what was my favorite story in the book, which wouldn’t be fair because I liked them all. Each story struck me a different way and left me thinking about them after the fact.

Counting Sheep: I could see society evolve to a point where sleep is stored in batteries. I could also see it being abused like it was in the book.

Popstars – A Treatment: I actually had to read this story a couple of times. Each time, I thought to myself “This would make a great series”. A Batman like hero who took out the bad guys. I would watch it.

Gonzo: This was an odd little story and I could relate to it in some ways. I mean, who hasn’t been on a bender and lost a few days (and to be clear, this was way before I had kids).

Pinnoccio: A creepy story and a different take on the story of Pinnoccio. I still shudder remembering what Pinnoccio turned into.

He Always Arrived at Night: A different twist on vampire love stories. Very different. I would love to see a full-length book made of it, I liked it that much.

The problem….with Love & Faith: I enjoyed reading this story. A different take on mermaid stories.

Winter’s Tale: A disturbing story of a mentally ill ex-bodyguard who is hired to find the girl he used to protect.

If I had to make a complaint about the book is that I noticed several misspellings of several words in the book. It didn’t bother me but I did have to go back to reread a sentence because it didn’t make sense to me. Other than that, I enjoyed reading it.

My Summary of Counting Sheep and Other Stories: 4 stars

Counting Sheep and Other Stories is one of those books that you cannot put down. This book takes you from dreamless sleep to an ex-bodyguard who is willing to put his life on the line to protect his former charge and beyond.

Will I reread: Yes

Will I recommend to family and friends: Yes

Age range: Adult

Why: Violence, language, and sexual situations

Counting Sheep & Other Stories - Written by DI Jolly
What would you do if you never had to sleep again? Just plug in and be refreshed????

What did I like? This was an interesting storyline that had all kinds of interesting avenues to think about. Could this ever happen to us in the future? Or is it happening now but the general public doesn’t know about it? I think I would prefer to stick with the old fashion way and get my Zzzz’s every night. How about YOU?

What will you like? A mind-boggling storyline that has so many twists and turns that you can’t stop reading. Thought-provoking, interesting, stimulating, fascinating all lead to a great read. The characters are stimulating and intriguing with lots of growth during the book. All in all a very good read. I received this from the author for an honest review with no other compensation.

At the heart of this collection is a post-cyberpunk tale, full of humanity, emotion, and investment, concerning a not-inconceivable technology and the impact it has on countless lives. The nuanced, flawed characters try one's patience in the way one's real-life acquaintances might, and yet one continues to root for them against increasingly bleak odds. Meanwhile, the titular "other stories" depict dark twists on classic tropes, inducing one to reconsider one's preconceptions of even the most frequently-told stories. The recommendation is well deserved.

I have read the book and I was amazed how different stories can be combined into one book, having common sense and message. Counting sheep is an extremely good written book, it is well composed and it is good to read. Also for non- native English speakers(like me). I recommend books by D.I.Jolly, especially if you are into dark sense of humour :) follow him on Facebook to get more short stories if you liked these one. I did :)

I'll be honest I always forget there are short stories attached. I always think of this as just the thriller Counting Sheep, which is a wild ride to say the least. Like D.I. Jolly's other books it breaks the mold on what you think is going to happen in a thriller and I love it.

I've read this one a few time by now and love it every time.

Awesome stories

I found the first story absolutely captured my mind. Very well written and what a futuristic idea/concept. Portable rest when needed. I loved the storyline. The short stories afterwards were equally interesting. I enjoyed this book so much 🤩

I really kinda of grew to hate the main character in Countin Sheep. Not because he was a bad character but I just kept wishing he'd make other choices or at least try find difference solutions. But I was so engaged I didn't realise how much the story got under my skin. It's brilliant.
