An extremely good book about many instances where God shows up in the most hardest of situations and even in simplistic ones as well. I really enjoyed each short story and was encouraged to become more familiar with scripture memorization to help in the battles ahead.

Interesting book, a series of short true life stories from Nepal in the 1970s. Got it because it is mentioned in At the Foot of the Snows. Not as good as that for sure.

This book, though written as a collection of short stories by retired Wycliffe missionary Gary Shepherd, it mostly followers chronological order. However, each story can stand alone, and some make a quick summary of events that the author writes about in more detail in another story. The author shares experiences that his family had as a missionary to the Magar people group in Nepal.

Shepherd writes in an easy-to-read, personal style. I suppose that these stories may have originally appeared in a missionary newsletter. However, many stories also serve as spiritual lessons that the author learned from a given event or circumstances and include a Bible verse as a theme. Many of the stories also contain a postscript that adds more information that might not have fit well in the narrative.

I found the stories uplifting and sometimes convicting when Shepherd shared some of his own shortcomings. The last section about the death of Shepherd's wife is challenging to read. Mostly, this light work is a relaxing read.

I'm tempted to give this a higher rating...Mr Shepherd shared his personal stories of risk and faith, and not to give a spoiler, he shared deeply painful experiences with love, respect and honesty.

But what really bugs me with missionary stories is that they generally seem to be written for the comfortable Christian back home. There's an assumed vocabulary, and it doesn't speak to an audience that's more accustomed to Hollywood style entertainment.

The truth really is stranger than fiction, and it provides a lot more adventure than watching Rambo smash baddies. C'mon and tell it like it is, and make it real!

I love missionary stories and the amazing sacrificies that they make to help others know Jesus. Gary Shepherd relates some very personal reflections on life as a translator in Nepal. Although I thought this book wasn't written that well, I was inspired by Gary's honesty and faith.
