Circa 1687: A top-notch story of a French soldier who is the adopted son of a powerful Iroquois chief, Big Throat (because of his oratory skills). The son, now known as Big Buffalo, has returned to his French command after 5 years of captivity with the Indians and has achieved the rank of Captain and is recognized for his fighting and strategic skills by both his country and his Indian brothers. He is commanded to carry a message back to his tribe as well as take a young woman to Frontenac.
Published in 1901, this story is fraught with tension. This is an excellent, well-written tale by Samuel Merwin.
