Story of photographer Edward Steichen and his Naval Aviation Photographic Unit activities during World War II. Lots of photographs covering the rise of naval aviation during the war, including action on Navy aircraft carriers. At age 62, Steichen wanted to help in the war effort. After being turned down by the Army, who he was in during the First World War, Steichen convinced the navy that he could influence the war effort with photography. Allowed to form the unit and pick his own photographers, Steichen's unit produced some of the most notable naval photographs of the war. Besides the action, he stressed to his photographers to take images of the sailors and seamen who were fighting the war. It is a coffee table book with over 200 beautiful duotone photographs.
