The First Horror:

This is one of the books I read back in the day when I was in middle school. Actually, I think I only read 1st and 3rd book in this series, which after having read the entire series now, it’s totally fine. Lol.

Overall, The First Horror was an okay read. It was pretty creepy, but I was not a fan of the characters, really. Especially not Kody.

So, we know that R.L. Stine loves his fake outs. I always expect them because otherwise I’d just be disappointed that the cool thing didn’t actually happen. But this time, in this book, I was surprised because some of them actually weren't fake outs, which was awesome!

The Second Horror:

Cally is very excited to have some new blood move into her house for her to torment. I actually really liked that we got some evil Cally POV as she haunted Brandt and his family. It was pretty cool. But I still don't understand why she’s evil. Why?! But evil Cally is not even that evil, tbh. What she does is more like pranks. She is not very good at this killing thing. Lol.

Overall, it was kind of a meh book. I liked the plot twist at the end and I liked the evil Cally POV, but that’s pretty much it. There was one Cally plot twist I saw coming a mile away, and that’s never fun. It’s still not explained why Cally is suddenly evil, so I hope we finally find out in the next book!

The Third Horror:

This is the final book in the trilogy! At the end of the first book, Kody promised she would come back for her sister, and she did.... Along with a whole film crew. Yup. they’re filming Cally and Kody’s story where it actually happened. And Kody is the lead actress playing her sister. This was very weird. Why not just play herself? 🤷‍♀️

Things about the house aren’t explicitly explained. We do get some hints here and there and we do, I guess, finally find out why Cally suddenly turned evil when she died. There was also a really weird revelation about the people who helped out around the house in all three books and I’m really confused? Just- why? It was kind of dumb. Overall, I thought this was a pretty average series with some pretty average characters.

This was a joy to read. Each book continues the story but has its own quirky personality. The entire trilogy felt like a Tales from the Crypt three part special made for middle school libraries. The twist in the Second Horror was phenomenal camp! A cozy and nostalgic read for October.
Even better is it can all be read for free thanks to the amazing Internet Archive.

This is my first time reading any of this series a friend let me borrow it. I enjoyed it and once I finish rereading goosebumps I plan on reading this series next.

Will forever be my favorite book. It has the perfect mix of nostalgia, horror, and teenagers. Plus all three horrors in one.

I must have read this trilogy a thousand times many moons ago. I loved scaring myself, and I loved reading about the supernatural. I can't remember, however, being as scared reading it as I was this time. I am the grand old age of twenty-three (almost twenty-four!) and I was jumping out of my skin when I heard the slightest noise in my empty house. This is what R.L. Stine is all about. I am a grown woman, it's ridiculous.

I find it amazing how kids can read these books, actually. All three were filled with such gruesome and gory scenes, terrible cliff-hangers at the end of each and every chapter, and trauma every few pages. It was delicious.

The first book in the trilogy is exciting, but upon reading the next two it's soon quite obvious that it's also an excellent set-up for what's to come in the next two installments. The ending is absolutely shocking - my book is the Collector's Edition (three books in one), I have no idea how I would've felt if I only had the first book and wasn't able to read on afterwards.

The second book becomes darker and a bit more creative, with Stine dabbling in ritual magic and voodoo. I found our male protagonist to be slightly irritating, particularly when he has three girls fawning over him at one point, making him think he was a bit of a ticket. His ending, though, was almost as delightful as the last! The twist was perfect, and I had forgotten all about it. Although I did work a few things out before they happened in book two (which, to be fair, is to be expected with an adult reading literature aimed at a younger audience), it was in no way as predictable as Call Waiting.

The third was probably my least favourite, but was still enjoyable. I found the plot to be slightly unbelievable to begin with - all of these horrible events happen at your old house, so you decide to go back so you can star in a film about it? Nonetheless, I enjoyed the gore, and I enjoyed the casualties. It was possibly the most gruesome of the three, but this is a very close call. I'm not too sure if the second or third installments would be as exciting if the reader hadn't experienced its predecessors, however.

I am an absolute sucker for being scared. I love it, and I had forgotten how wonderfully spine-tingly R.L. Stine's stories and words were. I have no idea where all of my old Point Horror and Goosebumps books are, but I really will have to have a look because I had lots of fun reading this one, despite having to put all of the lights on in the house before going downstairs for a glass of water during the night.

This trilogy is a good take on the "haunted house" cliche. The reader is given just enough backstory to make it a truly scary house. The ending of the first book will shock you. It's definitely different from your standard "haunted house" material. The second book isn't as good, but the third rounds out the trilogy nicely. I did have a few problems. The main characters, Cally and Kody, are supposed to be 15 or 16 but sound more like 10-12. The constant cliffhangers got on my nerves, but that's just R. L. Stine's writing style. Also,

I vividly remember reading these books as a 5th grader. The kid and dog getting stuck in the wall has stuck with me for years. They really are just a delightfully pulpy horror novel. If you're looking for a quick easy read, I highly recommend these books.

I read this book while in middle school. I was a HUGE R.L. Stine fan and like most of his other books, I couldn't put it down.
