The general aim for a reading development programme is to enable students to enjoy (or at least feel comfortable with) reading in the foreign language, and to read unfamiliar, authentic texts without any help.
Christine Nuttall suggests practical strategies you can use to help your students develop their reading competence. It is especially useful for exam and EAP classes.
Teaching Reading Skills in a Foreign Language will help you: • enjoy and value teaching reading • provide an attractive extensive reading programme for your students • choose or devise effective tasks and activities
I had this book as my class text in my Reading in ESL class during my graduate studies. It was phenomenal! Concise, excellent applications, perfect for ESL graduate or undergraduate course work or as a supplemental while teaching.
I couldn't get the newer editions at the time--and place, and even now when I would buy one a fresh copy--they are very expensive--I don't know which edition is 'best.'
I found this to be a fascinating insight into how reading works, complementing earlier books I had read on developing reading skills. I think it's something I will return to again and again, full of practical ideas.
Extremely useful with a lot of examples. I didn't manage to find a full copy of it but read most chapters through copies given by my Reading Comprehension teacher.
