This is an engaging story about celebrating the things about ourselves that make us special and different from other people. The narrative is appropriate for younger children and I can see why this book won the Grand Prize award in the Kids Are Authors Competition.
The illustrations are colorful and the anthropomorphic animal characters are very cute. Overall, it's a fun, fast read and is good for a group read-aloud.

Read aloud to the kids. Adorable book about a child porcupine and his mama. A good little lesson in the book. I love that it was written and illustrated by children!

Little Prickles is about a porcupine trying to fit in with the other students at school, but he can’t because his quills might hurt the other students. One day he finds a use for his quills and begins to give them away. In the end he realizes that without his quills, he’s no longer a porcupine and he needs his quills to protect him from potential predators. This book was written by students, so I think it would be great to show them that children have the ability to become published authors. I think this book is also great for showing students that they should be true to who they are and they can be accepted among peers without altering their appearance.

Wow, from the mouth of babes! The authors of this book did a great job. This is a simple and yet not so simple story. It an be unpacked on many levels. Well done!
