Whether you want to further your career, or have a better understanding of your relationship, this book is for you. I didn't expect to enjoy this book as much as I did, but was pleasantly surprised when I found it useful and informative. I appreciated the authors' style of writing too. The format in which she wrote the book, was if if she was having a face-to-face conversation with you. I think this was a great book, for the different topics it covers. And I don't necessarily think it's just for women. So go on, get a copy!
Entertaining and interesting, I read this on Libby. It really makes sense to use the same ideas that you would for finding an ideal mate as you would use to to find an ideal career role. I am blessed in both ways. I can identify with how my approach to my relationship with my husband has similarities and crossovers with how I do my daily work as a public library director. In both cases I am aiming for success and longevity. I am grateful that my aims are being met. However, in both cases I made careful and considered choices in what I was working with FIRST. It pays off to be reflective, strategic, and goal/oriented!
Very funny! Definitely more office based, then nursing/medical, but was recommended by my sister (who works in banking) and had to give it a try. Enjoyed diving into the professional world. And can definitely apply to my nursing/leadership career as well!
Girl on Top is a dating-rules-turned-career-advice book aimed at informing young women how to seek and build a successful career. The author, Nicole Williams, is very blunt, moderately funny and sometimes a bit crass. I am a fan of blunt and funny but I did not necessarily enjoy the crass comments, although they did not necessarily detract from the message she was trying to convey.
Ms. Williams did a pretty good job of turning classic dating "rules" into key points on how to make it in the big bad world of business. However, there were times that I felt some of the dating "rules" did not really apply in a woman's career. There were also some controversial bits of advice, such as using how you look to get ahead. Ms. Williams fully acknowledges that some of her advice is controversial but also has valid reasons for bringing those topics into the discussion and it added a bit of perspective as to how women and men in the workplace view (and judge) you.In general, Girl on Top is a quick read that skims the surface of several important issues that young women should know before entering the workforce.
Overall, I think the book was okay. Girl on Top is a book that young women about to enter or just entering the workforce might find informative and useful. It certainly raises issues that I did not think of when I started out in my career and it would have been helpful to have had this book at the time.
Every so often a "Eureka" moment comes along that flicks the proverbial light switch in the human brain to the "on position." Girl on Top is the end product of author Nicole Williams' "Eureka" insight. Williams, after being newly-single, had a "Eureka" moment while reading dating advice books. Her epiphany was that many of "The Rules" for romantic relationships were equally applicable to the 9-5 world. Williams declares, "Dating rules turned career strategies . . . [are:] everything you need to be the Girl on Top!" Each chapter explores how the identified dating rule applies to the modern day work world. Reading Girl on Top is like listening to a mash-up of the Dating Rules Hall of Fame with chapters on "Treat Him Mean, Keep Him Keen;" "Don't Giveaway the Milk For Free;" "Don't Waste the Pretty;" "Play Hard to Get;" "Be Willing to Walk Away;" and many more. Williams' conversational girlfriend to girlfriend delivery is smart, savvy, and witty, but also contains language that may offend some readers. Other readers may take issue with some her suggestions. Williams deflects these criticisms by summarizing Girl on Top as "an easy-to-get-your-head around way of thinking about your job, in a language that we're already familiar with, in a context that makes the mind-numbing boring theory of career a little more fun." Girl on Top is an entertaining tome on a serious subject!
This is a book teaching you how to apply the rules of dating to your career designed for the younger female audience. I suppose it is designed for the more naive and unmotivated ones as well. Everything she said could have been perfectly listed on one page. Beware of fluff!
I looked forward to this book because I had hoped maybe Nicole Williams may have some real pearls of wisdom to share, but unfortunately to my dismay, I was not impressed at all. Although, I must admit that it did bring up interesting workplace behavior, but nothing that could topple me or change my life.
I swear they let anyone write these days! Read this if you have nothing better to do, since its a quick read.
I thought the book used interesting examples, and it certainly delivered as the title promised to be like a dating book but the person that is your date is your career and those who can have an influence on its direction.
I can't say that I feel strongly about it much one way or the other.
While I was glad to have won this from goodreads, unfortunately it turned out to be a flop. The "advice" given was reductive and slightly insulting. I'd recommend that people look to find real mentors and ask their about their paths to success instead. Williams doesn't offer any true inspiration.
I won this book and was very excited to read it. All I can say is this book is a failure. The whole book could have been summed up in one chapter. I dont think anyone should take the dating rules to apply for a successful career.
What do dating and career success have in common? Actually a lot more than you would think. Williams has the right stuff when it comes to moving up in your career.
