Νομίζω πως, όποιος έχει διαβάσει τα βιβλία του Philip Kerr με ήρωα τον Μπέρνι Γκούντερ, περιμένει αυτό το 'κάτι παραπάνω' και από τα υπόλοιπα βιβλία του. Ευτυχώς, το "Στην κορφή του κόσμου" το προσφέρει στον αναγνώστη αφειδώς. Πρόκειται για μια εξαιρετικά καλογραμμένη ιστορία,με φόντο τον μυστικό κόσμο των βουνών - και μάλιστα των Ιμαλαΐων, τον πόθο κάθε αξιοσέβαστου ορειβάτη.
Πρωταγωνιστές του βιβλίου ο καταξιωμένος κι έμπειρος ορειβάτης Τζακ Φέρνες και η παλαιοντολόγος Στέλα Σουΐφτ. Οι δυο τους οργανώνουν μια επιστημονική αποστολή σε ένα απόκρημνο όρος του Νεπάλ, όπου ο Τζακ είχε βρει τυχαία ένα παράξενο κρανίο. Στόχος τους, η ανακάλυψη του θρυλικού γιέτι, του Χιονάνθρωπου των Ιμαλαΐων. Οι δυσκολίες που έχουν να αντιμετωπίσουν είναι πολλές - και οι δυσχερέστατες καιρικές συνθήκες που επικρατούν στην περιοχή δεν είναι ό,τι χειρότερο μπορεί να τους εμποδίσει στην αποστολή τους. Αυτό που μου άρεσε όμως περισσότερο στο συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο του Kerr, αυτό που κατάφερε τελικά να με κερδίσει, ήταν η ίδια η μαγεία του: ο σιωπηλός κόσμος των βουνών, που η ταλαντούχα πένα του κατάφερε να τον ζωντανέψει μπροστά στα μάτια μου. Η ιστορία των γιέτι, αυτών των 'μυθικών' πλασμάτων, που γνωρίσαμε τόσο παραστατικά μέσα από τις περιγραφές του. Και το σπουδαιότερο: το τέλος του βιβλίου, που αποπνέει ένα άκρως δυνατό αίσθημα ελπίδας και πίστης προς την ανθρωπότητα, πως τελικά δεν έχουν χαθεί και θυσιαστεί τα πάντα στον βωμό του χρήματος και της δόξας. Ένιωσα μια εσωτερική χαρά και γαλήνη διαβάζοντας την κατάληξή του και νομίζω πως, εκτός από τους πρωταγωνιστές του, βγήκα κι εγώ λίγο καλύτερος άνθρωπος τελειώνοντάς το - ή λίγο πιο σοφή, ίσως.

This was a fantastic book that delivered magically. It interwove science with adventure and was a great piece of fiction. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about hominoids as well as imagining the abominable snowman, a little differently from the Scooby Doo version. I wish there had been a little more character development, some of the characters were flat and unecessary, but was still a great book.

You just don't get a lot of Yeti fiction, and certainly not of this quality.
Until I get around to writing my Paranormal Romance side project where a Sasquatch and a Mummy battle it out for the affections of a coquettish Chupacabra (Do you know how huge the Paranormal Romance market still is?) you won't do better than this.
This Michael Crichtonesque thriller is a romp. The discovery of a skull by a climber leads to an expedition to seek out 'ol Big Foot himself. Much action ensues.
I prefer Phillip Kerr's lighter work. This shares GridIron's tone. Smart, fast n fun. There was even talk of a Disney movie around the time it came out. If you've enjoyed any Michael Crichton you're sure to enjoy this.
Right, back to my project; you see the Sasquatch gives off these pheromones, which are irresistible to Chupacabras, but the Mummy, boy is he ripped, seriously, I mean, ladies fan your faces...

Pretty dumb. I kept thinking, really? A yeti? I'm good with fantasy but somehow the intrusion of a yeti into a technothriller was just too goofy for me. Also, I had trouble telling all the secondary characters apart... including the villain, which is a problem.
Bernie Gunther convinced me to pick this up (thrift store style) but that cynical German bastard sold me a bill of goods.

It's been a while since I read anything, fiction or non-fiction, about the yeti, or Abominable Showman, or Bigfoot, or whatever you want to call the mythical ape-like creature. I don't know if such a creature exists - I doubt it - but if it does, it's probably in some secret valley or underground chamber, hidden from humans, safe from detection.
That's Philip Kerr's theory in this pleasant and readable novel.
Renowned mountain climber Jack Furness (an unfortunate name for a protagonist) finds a skull deep inside a cliff in the Himalayas. He gives it to a babe paleoanthropologist, Dr. Stella Swift, who investigates it and concludes it is a fairly recent specimen that belonged to a yeti.
Looking for fortune and glory, Swift and Furness assemble a team and set up a camp in the Himalayas, in the dead of winter, to find a yeti.
However, the India-Pakistan conflict is about to explode into war, and a CIA that is desperate for any information inserts a mole on the team, but we don't know who it is (though it's easy to guess). The team is a few hundred miles from any potential war zones, but the operative's job is information and reconnaissance, and to search for an important object (I can't give it away) that the U.S. has lost and must find.
So that's the plot. A bit thin, perhaps, but the action is brisk once the team finds a yeti and the characters are interesting and likeable. No really deep theme or message, other than man destroys everything he touches, so sometimes it's best to let things stay undiscovered. Kerr does make an issue of Swift's atheism, but doesn't do much with it.
All in all, a nice, pleasant, enjoyable book. Glad I bought the hardbound version off the clearance rack for five bucks.

While it was a good story about a significant archeological find in the Himalaya's there were some flaws elsewhere in the book. Character development was almost an afterthought, that with the large cast of characters could lead a person to get confused as to who was where at times. And with the expedition to go back to the mountains in an attempt to find something more we get a spy story thrown into the mix that I felt could have been left out. Overall a very good premise in a well written novel with some deep flaws that mar this one pretty deeply. Not dissapointing just not as satisfying as it could have been.

Adventure in the Himalayas, this one gives you the thrill of high peaks, high espionage, high international tension that may or may not result in nuclear war and, if that's not enough, say hi! to Esau and his relations - a colony of yeti, living in a hidden valley that the adventurers stumble across.

The book was fascinating to me. It was humorous at times, and had me laughing aloud. I don't think that it is a book for everyone. Readers who are interested in anthropology, should enjoy the novel.

Σίγουρα ένα βιβλίο που σε γεμίζει εικόνες και αν είσαι λάτρης των βουνών θα αργήσεις να ξεπεράσεις τα τοπία που «συνάντησες».
Μου άρεσε το πάντρεμα λογοτεχνίας και επιστημονικής τεκμηρίωσης αλλά με κούρασαν κάποιες εκτενείς επεξηγήσεις.
Χρειάζεται αρκετή επιμονή και υπομονή για να ολοκληρώσεις αυτό το βιβλίο αλλά όταν το καταφέρεις σου αφήνει μια γλυκόπικρη αίσθηση αφού ακριβώς λόγω της λογοτεχνικής μαεστρίας του συγγραφέα έχεις γίνει και εσύ μέρος της ιστορίας!

This is the second book of Kerr's that I've read. While I didn't enjoy this as much as "Dark Matter: The Private Life of Sir Isaac Newton," I still liked this one, but the middle chunk lacked a bit. The ending saved it for me though. Overall, it was a decent Yeti story, had some interesting plot points, but could've maybe been a little tighter.

Just OK. A bit predictable. Nice twist toward the end but I got the feeling Kerr was cranking this book out for variety between his mysteries, which I really like.

I DNF this book. I wanted to like it so bad. I got to page 170 and then gave up. Nothing suspenseful happened. It was SOOO boring…

Solider Thriller über eine Expedition ins Himalaya auf der Suche nach dem Yeti.
Ja, bevor ich anfing zu lesen war ich auch skeptisch ob das Thema nicht etwas ausgelutscht sei - jedenfalls um es jetzt noch zu lesen. Die Geschichte selbst ist Mitte der 90er erschienen.
Letztlich habe ich aber einen unterhaltsamen Roman bekommen, mit guten als auch eher schlechten Seiten.
Es gibt die typischen, eher flachen Charakte, einige hölzerne Dialoge. Während der Hanflungsstrsng des Agenten prinzipiell interessante Konfliktfragen aufwerfen konnte, war der Agent selbst und die Interaktion mit dem HQ für meinen Geschmack eher unnötig und nervig. Auch fand ich etwas sehr erstaunlich (um nicht zu sagen unrealistisch), wie viel Equipment für die DNA und Proteinanalyse angeblich ins Himalaya auf über 5000 Meter geschleppt wurde, um zu den Ergebnissen zu kommen, die geschildert wurden. Letztlich kann man da aber ein Auge zudrücken, weil es für die Story unpraktisch gewesen wäre, hätten sie die Proben einfach eingefroren und daheim analysiert - da hätten ein paar Trigger gefehlt. Geschenkt.
Auf der anderen Seite mochte ich die Schilderung der Expedition und des Himalaya und es gab ein paar tiefgründige Momente bei den Protagonisten, die einfühlsam geschildert wurden (z.B. ein Freeze-Moment an der Bergwand und ein hysterischen Selbstgespräch in Angesicht einer aus dem Ruder gelaufenen Situation). Auch die paläoanthropologischen Einwürfe sowie das Bergsteiger-Wissen haben mich interessiert. Das Ende musste so kommen wie es kam und konnte mir dann auch nicht mehr als ein Schulterzucken entlocken.
Ich bin zufällig auf das Buch gestoßen in einem Bücherschrank und kannte den Autoren noch aus meiner Jugend, als ich mit Begeisterung 'Game Over' las. Ich hab die Lektüre nicht bereut, sie hat mich unterhalten und mich bei den sommerlichen Temperaturen gekonnt in kalte Gefilde entführt. Nachhaltig beeindruckt hat sie mich aber nicht. Kann man lesen, man verpasst aber auch nix.

Aunque me habían recomendado Philip Kerr por su serie de novelas negras del detective Bernie Gunther es curioso que esta es la primera novela que leo de él y no tiene nada que ver con dicho detective.
En esta novela acompañaremos a Jack, un alpinista profesional, y Swift, una paleoantropóloga, que viajarán a una expedición en el Himalaya en búsqueda de un homínido mítico conocido comúnmente como el yeti.
La novela en general me ha encantado, he disfrutado mucho porque tanto el argumento, como la forma de enlazar a los hechos, a los personales y la historia en sí están bien pensados, plasmados y escritos. Se trata de una auténtica obra maestra de síntesis pues no sobra ni un solo personaje, ni un solo capítulo, ni un solo momento de la novela y eso se agradece muchísimo ya que encontramos una novela de acción continua.
Destacar el trabajo del autor al dotar de realismo en todo momento a la historia ya que, otras novelas que pueden abarcar el tema del yeti pueden sonar fantásticas pero en esta novela se habla en todo momento desde una vertiente científica que da muchísimo sentido a los descubrimientos y hechos de los que se va nutriendo.
Se trata de una novela muy interesante y recomendable a todas aquellas personas que disfruten con las novelas de aventuras y sean mayores de 15 años, por la complejidad de algunas explicaciones técnicas.

As the blurb promises, we have a hunt for the yeti, a crisis between nuclear states and an out-of-control American agent working under cover.
I must confess that I skipped through some of the awkward chunks of exposition. Academics rehearse sequences of previous research and theory. Members of the expedition are introduced one after another, with too many biographical details to memorise. Equipment is listed with technical details, probably authentic but overpowering to read.
The climbing sequences sound convincing, but I have no technical knowledge of this area. There is plenty of tension and some gripping action. The mystery gets resolved and the unexpected conclusion is neat, if you can forgive some convenient lucky breaks.
I felt unsure about the crisis-induced love between two characters who appear to be dedicated to their own agendas. Perhaps people's attitudes really would change after such experiences.
In any case, I enjoyed the book.

Desde mi tierna infancia siento predilección por el Abominable Hombre de las Nieves y todo lo referente a su figura. El Yeti y el entorno en el que habita este monstruo me parecen argumentos perfectos para producir literatura de misterio y de terror.
Philip Kerr nos revela varios géneros en esta novela: el thriller, el misterio, las aventuras y el terror. El entretenimiento está asegurado, de eso no cabe duda y los derroteros, aparentemente ficticios, por lo que marcha su libro hacen que la lectura se convierta en algo "casi" verosímil.
Podréis deducir que esta reseña goza de la mas carente imparcialidad cuando os diga que me ha gustado y que os la recomiendo.

Το βιβλίο κατάφερε να με ταξιδέψει, και να με μεταφέρει στον όμορφο κόσμο των βουνών κσι της ορειβασίας. Μερικά τμήματα ήταν ενδιαφέροντα και περίμενες με αγωνία να δεις την συνέχεια. Υπήρξαν όμως και κομμάτια ανιαρά, ιδιαίτερα όταν έγραφε, επιστημονικές και τεχνολογικές λεπτομέρειες ή ακόμη και ορολογίες της ορειβασίας. Παρ’ ότι το ξεκίνημα ήταν αργό στο τέλος προχώρησε με καταιγιστικό ρυθμό. Μειονέκτημα οι διάφορες φράσεις στην νεπαλέζικη γλώσσα που δεν μεταφράστηκαν, αφήνοντας κάποια κενά στην κατανόηση των διαλόγων. Ήταν πάντως ένα βιβλίο σε εντελώς διαφορετική γραμμή και θεματολογία απ’ αυτή του κυνικού ντετέκτιβ Μπένυ Γκούντμαν

As a teen I enjoyed the Bernie Gunther books so when I saw this one at a second hand store it was an easy purchase. Then it stayed on my piles for years, unread. And for good reason, apparently.
This book is not for me. I don't want to read about an entitled white man breaking the law in a foreign country so he can irresponsibly climb a mountain (at risk of death), and then steal a skull he finds and bring it with him to whatever coloniser country he's from. Do I care if this man lives or dies? No. I hope he ends up in some scary prison for life.

I loved the detail and science that went into this story. It is obviously well researched and this adds to the suspense and action. A mountaineer, his sherpas, and an adventurous group of scientists set off on a mission to capture a Yeti (abominable snowman). Not everyone on the journey is who or what they say they are!
Lots of adventure, suspense, and excitement. There are quite a few good characters, but I ended up rooting for Rebecca and Esau!

Having read all of the Bernie Gunther books, I felt compelled to look at some of P. Kerr's earlier works.
This is more traditional thriller in the Michael Crichton/Alastair MacLean sort of way.
It seems pretty well grounded in its science (though I'm no expert so can't be sure) and the plot rips along at a fair pace.
An entertaining holiday read rather than anything profound but well written for its genre.

I found this novel at a library book sale, and had to snag it up because it was a thriller without a synopsis. Curiosity might just kill me one day lol.
This exceeded my expectations, eventhough i didn't know what i was getting into. If you find a blend of science,history, and a bit of thrills. This is a book you may want to check out. Dive in!
Only critism i would have, is the dry writing at times. Other than that, I would definitely read another novel of this genre and topic

This was a very good book. It wasn't a 5 star but more than a 4 star. I have never read anything about the Yeti or Abominable Snowman so it was a nice change of pace. The adventure is set in the Himalayas and included scientific discoveries, espionage, and political tension which may lead to a nuclear war. I don't think you could find any other book quite as stimulating as this one. I highly recommentd it!

Εδώ ο Φίλιπ Κερ με εξέπληξε. Έχοντας διαβασει την Τριλογία του Βερολίνου πρώτα και γνωρίζοντας τον σαν ένα συγγραφέα αστυνομικών μυθιστορηματων, αυτό το βιβλίο με ξάφνιασε. Μια περιπέτεια που μας μεταφέρει στα Ιμαλάια και στην αποστολή του Τζακ και της Στέλλα για να βρουν απαντήσεις σε ερωτήματα που γεννιόνται από την ανακάλυψη ενός κρανίου. Η γλώσσα είναι ευκολοδιάβαστη και οι χαρακτήρες συμπαθείς και ανθρώπινοι με τα πάνω και τα κάτω τους. Μια πολύ ωραία περιπέτεια.

Perfekter Science-Thriller mit außergewöhnlichem Schauplatz. Dem Himalayahochgebirge. Ein weiterer Roman, der von der Begegnung mit Vormenschen erzählt. Dieses Mal baut Kerr auf den Yeti-Sichtungen auf. Aber dort auch ein Satellit niedergegangen ist, wird es lebensgefährlich, denn verschiedene Interessen kollidieren miteinander.

Just try it. Some parts are scientific and a bit hard to get through, but the overall story is so good. And it makes you think a bit more about the possibilities of Sasquatch, and/or how they relate to humans, if real. I really enjoyed this random find at goodwill. It’s now one book I refuse to let go of because it’s honestly just that different and brilliant.
