About the author

Michael Teitelbaum has been a writer and editor of children’s books for more than thirty years. He worked on staff as an editor at Golden Books, Grossett & Dunlop, and Macmillan. In addition to The Scary States of America, Michael’s fiction work includes The Very Hungry Zombie: A Parody, and The Very Thirsty Vampire: A Parody both done with artist extraordinaire Jon Apple, published by Skyhorse. His non-fiction work includes writing Jackie Robinson: Champion for Equality, published by Sterling, and The Baseball Hall of Fame, a 2-volume encyclopedia, published by Grolier. He is also the series editor of Great Escapes, true-life acts of incredible courage, published by Harper Collins.
Michael has always had an interest in the paranormal, despite a rather normal childhood in Brooklyn, NY. These days, Michael lives with his wife, Sheleigah, and two talkative cats in an (as yet unhaunted) 180-year-old farmhouse in the beautiful Catskill Mountains of upstate New York.

Your child will be indoctrinated about the evils of littering, get to say a few random Spanish words, count to six in English and Spanish, identify which object can clean up garbage (apparently a household vacuum cleaner can suck up mounds of food, cans, and paper and plastic bags) and dance with the pirate piggies all in one reading! However, Dora Saves Mermaid Kingdom did leave me reeling with profound questions. Why can't a swimming cow with a fin-like tail help Dora and Boots swim through the sea just as well as dolphins can? And what exactly did the dolphins do to help anyway? And why did Dora wait until she was done cleaning up Mermaid Island before freeing that poor mermaid from that suffocating net? People first, children. People first.

This book was pretty good. Dora and Boots go to save mermaid kingdom because the mean octopus dumps garbage on mermaid kingdom. They go and find the gold crown because Miranda the mermaid said if she wears it she will get a wish. Dora and Boots found the gold crown and Miranda said to put it on. She makes a wish and she becomes a mermaid. Her wish was to stop the octopus from putting garbage in the sea.

I think this was my second favorite Dora book.

A fun read that includes the English and Spanish language. Great book for interactive reading and if the child has seen the television show DORA then they will be more engaged. Introduces a limited amount of Spanish words. I like how the author uses Spanish in lieu of English instead of with it. Ex. Hola! My name is Dora. Instead of writing Hola! (Hello) or something like that they use in fluently. I think a child can learn a language easier like that.

OK, I'll admit that as a rule, I really dislike the branded children's books. That said, there are some Dora books that are actually quite good. And they have helped sprinkle some Spanish words into my kids' vocabularies. Both my boys LOVE this particular book, but I find it to be awful - much worse than many of the the Dora books.
Dora Goes to School is MUCH better.

This is another addition to the Dora franchise - we have read a bunch of Dora books and our girls love them. Of course, then, with books like this, they want us to buy them the merchandise, too, but we resist as best we can.

My 3 year old would give this 5 stars. She wants to read it all the time. I find most of the Dora books vaguely annoying, but that could truly be because I am sick of Dora. I will say that as far as my child goes all these Dora books are winners, and this one is one of her favorites.

I know this is a kids book and I shouldn't be putting too much thought into it, but shouldn't a magic wishing crown be able to clean up all of mermaid kingdom? Why does it only partially work?
