A children's picture book that is full of top-notch info for teachers!

We are not born knowing how to read, but with the proper training, our brains can learn it and learn it well. It all begins with simply talking aloud to babies. Do it and do it often.

Simple text.
Effective examples and practice opportunities.
Easy to implement (if you so desire)
Evidence-based (with references in the back for those of you wanting to know)
This book does a great job of explaining to children and their caregivers exactly HOW the brain learns to read. It uses kid friendly language and examples but doesn't use "kiddie" language. It is a picture book, yes, but it is written so that anyone of any age will see this to be right on their level.
My one negative (if you can really call it that), is that I find the format to be distracting as it puts the parent info and the kid info together on the same page making the pacing of the storytelling disjointed the first time you read through and the visual effect to be like a website that has pop ups everywhere. The first time through the adult will no doubt be trying to take in all the brain facts and such while also trying to read the story. My recommendation would be for the adult to read through the book alone the first time just to take in all the science, so that you can ignore all those pop ups and just read the story when you are with your kid(s).
Overall, a worthwhile addition to any library and especially those who are working with emerging readers or struggling readers. As a licensed/credentialed teacher and a homeschool educator, this is essential for helping children and their caregivers understand how the brain works and that if either are struggling it demonstrates that reading is a "brain needs practice" issue rather than a "not smart enough" issue.
That realization and the validation that comes along with it is a game changer. For both of them.
