Lebogang Mashile is an astonishing poet who should have a much higher profile throughout the English-speaking world. Her problem, of course, is that she is a black South African woman, and the publishing world really is not interested in promoting the work of black, South African women. And it should because she is someone who understands the power of words, who uses the construction of language, who delves behind meanings to the truth that words can represent.
