I'm astonished at one reader's rating and comments about this book! Obviously, she hasn't seen Gail Doan's work in person or taken classes from her either! So what if it's "old hat" to her or she thinks it's meant for beginners which, I assure you it's not! (I have sewn for 55+ years). If the book inspires a new generation to fall in love with fine sewing and heirloom techniques, it accomplishes much more than the sour grape attitude about a child outgrowing a project sooner than one can finish it. I can assure you the projects can be finished in a matter of days, if one is experienced and serious enough about it! When it comes to fine sewing and heirloom techniques, there is no one a master and artisan today as precise and innovative as is Gail Doane. I gave this a three star even though a beginning seamstress may give it a five. The embellishment techniques in here although adorable are old hat to me. I know them all already. Many of the techniques are often shown in Sew Beautiful magazine. There are patterns for the garments in the back of the book. A beginner might find this book very inspiring but for me, there was nothing new in it.
Embellishments though cute are time consuming and many seamstresses might not want to do so much for a growing child. If you do want to try some of the garments in this book, remember children grow fast and if it takes you a year to smock or crochet something, the kid will outgrow what you started in that time.
