Boys and girls… Men and women… Tomcats and kitties…

Utterly unaware of the five pairs of eyes differentially following her hindquarters, so clearly visible beneath her scanty clothing, Hortense walked down Rue des Citoyens and disappeared behind Saint Gudule.

Our Beautiful Heroine unarguably belongs to the genre of detective fiction but it is a cleverly ironic intellectual mystery, exclusively unusual in all its aspects.
It contains plenty of exotically mocking outings into philosophy, literature, music, arts, geopolitics and pseudo-history.
It also includes at least two love stories: one of our beautiful heroine and a mysterious stranger and the other of a valorous smoky tomcat and a fiery red pussycat…

Love enters man through the eyes, but it invades cats by the whiskers, as Galen teaches us.

And there are a lot of other curious things as well.
With all its ludicrous misconceptions and many false steps Our Beautiful Heroine can even be considered as an antithesis of Death and the Compass by Jorge Luis Borges.

And the furious storm of autumnal equinox has begun. Badly closed shutters started clapping and the counting of wreckage commenced. (for the other details look in the books by Victor Hugo and Joseph Conrad).

On one side there is verity and on the other there is falsity, and quite often, we don’t even know on which side we’re actually standing.

Oozes wit and charm. Though essentially frivolous, the meta-playfulness of the detective story and its exposed workings (Geoff's picture of the Pompidou Center, nearly as relevant here as for The Great Fire of London), the conflicts between narrator, author, and editor, the almost Robbe-Grillean spatial attention all add their diversions. The only thing it lacks, even among its entire neighborhood of cast members, is a proper protagonist -- though we're told right in the title that Hortense is beautiful and the heroine, she's really not so interesting or active. She's a distracted philosophy student, she buys needless clothing when anxious, she gets stared at by nearly ever male character point, she falls blindly in love -- but none of this makes her an actual human engaging character. As far as she's mostly an object-of-ogles (including those of narrator, author, and presumably reader) at times, I'd be more annoyed, probably, if I didn't know that Roubaud was still in the grips of dealing with the death of his wife when he must have been working on this: he's entitled to diverting himself however he can I suppose.

From Ch. 10 on navigating the obstacles set up to prevent readers getting their desired books from the library stacks - "...if, for example Hortense wished to read Pierrot Mon Ami by Raymond Queneau, she had to know when the book had been acquired, not when it was published (that would have been too easy); for each section of the alphabet there was a volume located in a perfectly random part of the room and good only for certain years. One had to find the appropriate volume, look up the author, look up the work, write down the call number and then discover in which other volume the real call number could be found, since the first call number was an old call number that had been shelved in favor of another, more modern one at the time of a particular shift of power inside the librarian empire."

"...and there at last is one of the book boys, who appears before the row in which you are sitting. And he even throws a book onto your table. Feverishly, you pick it up: but, alas, it is not Queneau's Pierrot Mon Ami (whose call number you had discovered, thanks to a hot tip, in a special subcatalogue devoted to works on the circus) you have before you, but rather Einfuhrung in der Theorie der Elektrizität und der Magnetismus by Max Planck, Heidelberg, 1903. You rush to the complaints desk, where you wait for ten minutes: a Finnish girl doesn't understand why The Critical Review of French Discus-Throwing for the year 1910 is not to be found in the room, while the issue for 1909 is; in something resembling German, the librarian patiently explains that the head librarian decided, for reasons of security, to transfer all sports magazines dating from precisely 1910 into another room, which has just closed for the day. At last it's your turn. The comparison of your request card with the call number on Planck's book clearly indicates that you are right, The Z is not a W, and the 8 is not a 4; there can be no doubt, but what to do? Wait another hour? The book that will reach you, if it is not Pierrot Mon Ami, may be even less interesting. Resigned to your fate, you return to your place and begin studying quantum theory."

A playful, self-aware mystery novel in which the central mystery ultimately takes a back seat to the writing. This was a very fun read - it was littered with author's notes, narrator's notes, publisher's notes (sometimes attacking each other), characters referring to specifics within the book ("Take out your maps from Chapter 7.") and comments on writing, novels, philosophy and mysteries in general.

The book would probably be disappointing to someone looking for a genuine mystery.

Finally, it was nice to read the first story in the trilogy! (it's a shame that Dalkey Archive can't get the rights to publish the English version); I thoroughly enjoyed this and feel it may be much stronger in character, description and overall prose. The view of the neighborhood became clearer to me so that i wish i could have read the books in the proper order. Roubaud is definitely capable of such a wide range of thought and i appreciate how his mind works and how that proceeds to make its way onto the page. He is worthy of Q, without a doubt.

"Nel romanzo in cui siamo, che è un romanzo giallo, visto che c'è un detective, anzi ce ne sono addirittura due, un Narratore che segue l'inchiesta, un criminale e dei crimini, non è paradossale che non ci sia nessun assassino? Che non sia stata versata neanche la più piccola goccia di sangue? Vi dirò sinceramente che l'atmosfera di quest'inchiesta ha qualcosa di strano, di insolito, direi addirittura di straniero."



Incappai per la prima volta in Jacques Roubaud una decina di anni fa quando, ricercando libri di Benni in biblioteca (c'è da dire che la consultazione dei testi bibliotecari è immensamente più semplice al giorno d'oggi), il catalogo mi propose Il rapimento di Ortensia, tradotto appunto da Stefano Benni sempre per Feltrinelli.
Fu così che lessi il secondo capitolo di una trilogia di cui ignoravo l'esistenza (cosa che odio, ma che si trattava di un sequel lo scoprii poi) e scoprii l'esistenza dell'OuLiPo*.

La bella Ortensia (trovato fortuitamente in un mercatino dell'usato, essendo ormai libro fuori catalogo) è, come avveniva per il suo sequel, un romanzo che si presenta come un giallo, ma che in realtà è un delizioso esercizio di scrittura, fortemente metatestuale, in cui il Narratore, l'Autore e anche il Lettore sono loro stessi 'personaggi'.
Chi cerca personaggi femminili ben caratterizzati e per nulla ricadenti in connotazioni stereotipate potrebbe storcere il naso nell'incontrare Ortensia e le altre donne qui presenti, ma in realtà tutti i personaggi ricadono in archetipi ben riconoscibili e cedono il passo alla scrittura, alle divagazioni enciclopediche, alle citazioni letterarie e matematiche, a una impaginazione studiata per impegnare il lettore e, perché no, intrattenerlo con un gioco intellettuale.


*OuLiPo, ovvero Ouvroir de Littérature Potentielle: fondato da Queneau e Le Lionnais nel 1960, tra i suoi membri più noti, oltre allo stesso Queneau, annovera Perec e Calvino; non è un movimento letterario, ma si occupa di ricercare nuove strutture e schemi che possano essere usate dagli scrittori nella maniera che preferiscono, usando i vincoli (per esempio i lipogrammi) come strumenti di ispirazione.
Roubaud, matematico, poeta, scrittore e traduttore, invitato da Queneau, ne fa parte dal 1966.

Coi libri degli OuLiPo, ci si diverte. Questi sono così bravi che si sono dati tutte una serie di regole per forzare la scrittura in percorsi a ostacoli (detti più correttamente “restrizioni formali”) che determinano una prosa inconsueta e spassosissima. (Georges Perec per esempio scrisse un romanzo in cui era bandita la vocale “e”, e poi un altro in cui era l’unica vocale utilizzata.)

Anche questo romanzo, pensato per essere il primo di sei romanzi (che poi si fermò a tre - due soli tradotti in italiano), obbedisce a una struttura matematica. Ma facciamo che questa parte la salto, essendo sempre stato un somaro in matematica, ho rinunciato a capirla io stesso. Mi soffermerò invece sul corpo per cui questo sistema ha funto da scheletro.

Il romanzo ruota attorno a una serie di crimini, e alle indagini che ne seguono, che prendono il nome di “Inchiesta del terrore dei negozianti”.
C’è l’ispettore Blognard, attanagliato dal mistero criminoso.
C’è sua moglie, che copre il divano di una fodera protettiva, ma che poi pensa di dover proteggere anche quella, e allora cuce una fodera alla fodera.
Ci sono turiste scandinave “che punteggiano l’aria di innumerevoli ö e ø.”
C’è un autobus, che Ortensia (di cui la Voce Narrante è invaghito, schernito dall’Autore - con cui c’è un costante dialogo metanarrativo che coinvolgere attivamente anche il lettore) autobus, dicevo, che Ortensia prende per andare in biblioteca e che il suo professore di filosofia usa come metafora (che fa inevitabilmente pensare a Queneau).
C’è la moglie del filosofo, che indossa una sola scarpa.
C’è la biblioteca, che ha organizzato un inferno burocratico per scoraggiare quegli ignoranti provvisti di tessera che vogliono sottrarre le sue opere.
C’è Arapède, braccio destro dell’ispettore Blognard, aderente alla filosofia del pironnismo, che allena la sua pazienza sbucciando uova crude.

Absurde mais captivant. Exaspérant mais agréable. Plein de détournements et de digressions, de longs descriptifs (frivoles) des (excentriques) personnages, de scènes à priori inutiles à l'intrigue mais amusantes quand même. Hortense ne fait pas grande partie et je n'ai pas trop aimé le regard masculin, lourd au point d'être idiot (que des jeunes femmes oublient des culottes ET portent des robes transparentes ET laissent voir "les couleurs de toisons révélés par une mini jupe"). Peut être que j'ai pas apprécié l'ironie...
