هل هي رواية عاطفية؟ أم رواية فلسفية؟ أن رواية بوليسية؟ أم فضح
لأساليب اليهود الإجرامية؟
إنها هذه الأمور كلها في وقت واحد، ومن هنا غناها وما تثيره لدى القارئ من شوق وفضول... وقد قال كولن ويلسون لصديقه يوسف شرورو، أحد مترجمي هذا الكتاب: "عندما تنشر هذه الرواية، ستنطلق مدافع النقاد اليهود علي، وسوف أتهم بعدائي للسامية، وقد تشتري الرواية من الأسواق دون أن يراها أحد..."
وهل صحيح أن هناك حبوباً مخدرة إذا تناولها الإنسان شحنت عقله بمولد كهربائي ضخم، وأطلقت طاقات حياته الخلاقة التي تنظم تفكيره، وكونت في داخله السوبرمان الذي يتحدث عنه نيتشه؟

Colin Henry Wilson was born and raised in Leicester, England, U.K. He left school at 16, worked in factories and various occupations, and read in his spare time. When Wilson was 24, Gollancz published The Outsider (1956) which examines the role of the social 'outsider' in seminal works of various key literary and cultural figures. These include Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre, Ernest Hemingway, Hermann Hesse, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, William James, T. E. Lawrence, Vaslav Nijinsky and Vincent Van Gogh and Wilson discusses his perception of Social alienation in their work. The book was a best seller and helped popularize existentialism in Britain. Critical praise though, was short-lived and Wilson was soon widely criticized.
Wilson's works after The Outsider focused on positive aspects of human psychology, such as peak experiences and the narrowness of consciousness. He admired the humanistic psychologist Abraham Maslow and corresponded with him. Wilson wrote The War Against Sleep: The Philosophy of Gurdjieff on the life, work and philosophy of G. I. Gurdjieff and an accessible introduction to the Greek-Armenian mystic in 1980. He argues throughout his work that the existentialist focus on defeat or nausea is only a partial representation of reality and that there is no particular reason for accepting it. Wilson views normal, everyday consciousness buffeted by the moment, as "blinkered" and argues that it should not be accepted as showing us the truth about reality. This blinkering has some evolutionary advantages in that it stops us from being completely immersed in wonder, or in the huge stream of events, and hence unable to act. However, to live properly we need to access more than this everyday consciousness. Wilson believes that our peak experiences of joy and meaningfulness are as real as our experiences of angst and, since we are more fully alive at these moments, they are more real. These experiences can be cultivated through concentration, paying attention, relaxation and certain types of work.

A great read to start the New Year!
"And year after more than two thousand years of philosophy, we are not very much wiser. Life is still a confusion. It still escapes us. Yet the true philosophers continue to dream of some simple tool – like a pair of pliers – that will give us a grip on life."
Set during Christmas, a Professor finally reunites with his old friend’s son and former pupil.
This novel is so much more than a murder mystery. I wrote a paper on free will and existentialism in my undergrad theology class, which definitely helped me through this novel.
A dialogue surrounding events and uncertainties, misgivings and rebirth. A heavy read within its 24/7 pages. Nonetheless, definitely a substantial piece of work, itself resurrected.

I keep binge reading Colin Wilson’s books. One after another after another, because all of the books transmit a sense of profound purpose, passion, and intensity. Wilson’s discovery is astonishing, and in this book, as in many others, he communicates it on multiple levels. There is the level of a detective story; there is the level of philosophical discussion; and there is the level of passionate intensity of energy and consciousness that shines through this book.

اخترت الكتاب من بين مجموعة كتب لكولن ولسن لدي ..في التعريف عن الكتاب يقول الناشر : "هل هي رواية عاطفية؟ أم رواية فلسفية ؟ أم رواية بوليسية ؟ أم رواية عن تأثير المخدرات؟ أم فضح لأساليب اليهود الإجرامية؟ .إنها هذه الأمور كلها في وقت واحد"
فاذا أضفنا رغبتي الشديدة في البدء بقراءة أعمال ويلسن لك حينها أن تتخيل حماسي الشديد في بداية الرواية .
هي رواية بوليسية بالدرجة الأولى ،عاطفية في الدرجة الثانية، تحركها الفلسفة ، ولا يتعدى اختيار أبطالها من اليهود كونه تابلا لإضافة بعض التشويق والإثارة . وما قراءته على الغلاف الخارجي يشبه في أسلوبه الاسلوب المبتذل الذي تتبعه المجلات النسائية في تسليط الضوء على جزء من المقابلة وتضخيمها لجذب أكبر عدد من القراء .
في البداية تأسرك الرواية وسرعتها واسلوب الكاتب في ابقاءك لاهثا وراء ما سيحدث لاحقا. ثم تترهل الخيوط فجأة وتصبح نقاشات مملة بعض الشيء :ذهبوا الى الحانة الفلانية واحتسوا البراندي، ثم ذهبوا إلى بيت المحقق العلاني واحتسوا الويسكي،ثم ذهبوا إلى الكوخ المهجور واحتسوا الشيري..وهكذا.
بعض الصفحات عميقة جدا وتحتاج قراءة متأنية واعادة قراءة وهي في رأيي زبدة الكتاب .. .الإنسان محدود .الحرية المطلقة لا وجود لها . والإنسان مقيد بعاداته مكبل بجسده ونادرا ما يمتلك غاية صادقة.
ما يحتاجه الإنسان ليس الحرية ..فهو يمتلك منها أكثر منه يستهلك ،كما يقول جوستاف بطل الرواية، بل يحتاج إلى رؤية الهدف . وهدف البطل هو حياة يمضيها في البحث المتواصل وتقوده الى كشف سر الحرية الانسانية..طريقه استعمال ارادته بصير جميل والتهام سنين حياته في مجهود ثابت والغاية هي الحرية من السأم الذي يغشى الحياة.
العلاقة بين تسفايغ وناتاشا ذكرتني بفيلم lost in translation .بل ان بعض الجمل التي تشرح طبيعة العلاقة بينهما تكاد تكون اختصارا للفيلم بأكمله. ( احاول العثور على الجمل لادراجها في الريفيو )
ملاحظة أخيرة : النسخة التي معي إصدار دور الأداب وترجمتها جيدة.

Stayed up late finishing this book last night. That's the way to give proper attention to a novel and do yourself the favor of not losing continuity. From now on it's reading a book in as few sittings as close together as possible!
My wife got me this book from the lower Manhattan "Mysterious Book Store" at 58 Warren Street. I was attracted to the title (borrowed from a book by existential theologian Paul Tillich), the cut-up art on the cover, and the sales-pitch oriented description "the most unusual mystery story you have ever read".
The author Colin Wilson was from the UK, I looked him up on Wikipedia - he is considered a philosopher, who also believes philosophers should write murder stories. According to the web (so this could be hearsay) he is associated with the Human Potential movement in the 60's and 70's, and labelled as a "positive existentialist". This novel got published in 1964.
The 2 central characters in the novel are Karl Zweig, an existential theologian, and Gustav Neumann, who is a thinker, chemist and son of a prominent German doctor. They were both living in Germany until the early 30's. Neumann looks up to Zweig and Zweig believes Neumann has a really interesting mind trained by his father, so the admiration/fear and maybe competition is mutual. Back then they end their days in Germany with a rift between them, and never hear from one another again until they later have a reason to meet in England. The plot interestingly evolves through philosophical argumentation and confrontation. The center piece is in the book features a heated confrontational discussion where Neumann reveals his disappointment over Zweig's caving in to Christianity in front of Zweig's company over lunch, including an attractive woman who leaves the table because Neumann is so frank and rude. She is the wife of a thinker lacking credence and very attracted to the powerful mind and presence of Zweig's. The reasoning around Zweig's switch to view the actions of Christ very important while maintaining an otherwise benign scientific truth seeking world view gives some interesting viewpoints about the aftermath of Nazi Germany. It only irritates Neumann though, who accuses him of voluntarily leaving Nazi Germany, thereby automatically being considered a great humanitarian who now on top of that has published a book with Christian undertones - he is a weakling who has betrayed the tradition of philosophical honesty. I liked this chapter very much, it was easy to feel the tension.
The death in this murder story is indeed unusual and without spoiling anything I can reveal that it features a death involving mind altering drugs in pursuit of full human freedom, throwing the shackles of the habitual mind aside. The philosophical position throughout the book is that the human race is not free. We can not cross certain boundaries and exceed humanhood and become superman, besides occasional moments when we think we see a greater piture. That old problem. Nietzche is often mentioned.
Necessary doubt.

يقول سيوران إن الشك هو سادية الأرواح الناقمة، إلا أن ولسون يقول إن الشك هو المحدودية، السجن الذي يحيط بالمرء ويسلب حريته،
هل يمكن لك أن تتصور المرء حراً من كل تلك القيود؟ متخلصاً من كل عادة ودافع اعتاد فعله دون وعي أو إرادة؟ ماذا لو امتلك الإرادة والسلطة المطلقة على نفسه؟
هل يحتاج الإنسان إلى الحرية حقاً، أم أنه يملك منها بالفعل أكثر مما يستهلك؟ هل عادات المرء تأسره وتدمغ حياته بالسأم الأبدي أم أنها تنقذه من الحرية المطلقة؟
وهل أجوبة كل تلك الأسئلة هي غايات تبرر الوسائل التي اتبعها نيومن؟
هل من الصواب أن ندعوه بال"المجرم"؟ أم أنها حرب الإنسان ضد محدوديته، ولكل حرب ضحاياها؟
وهل كان البروفيسور تسفايغ المسؤول عن إشعال فتيل هذه الحرب في طالبه الحاذق المخادع، أم أنه لم يعرفه قط ولو عرفه مذ كان فتى ثائراً متمرداً؟
هل تنجح ثورة العقل تلك في قلب موازين العالم أم أنها قد تنتهي بتراجيديا؟
أسئلة يسيطر بها نيومن على عقول القراء ويعبث بها كما يسيطر على ضحاياه إن صحت تسميتهم بذلك، وهو سؤال آخر ستطرحه على نفسك بين كل صفحة وأخرى، دون أية وعود بالعثور على إجابة، فأنت أيضاً معني بهذا الشك، أليس من الجبن بعد كل ذلك منعه من التسرب إلى نفسك؟

Karl Zweig, a professor of philosophy, happens to see a former student of his, Gustav Neumann, in the company of a rich older man, and this leads him to approach a colleague at Scotland Yard with the proposition that Neumann may be a master criminal who is killing older, wealthy men for their money - or maybe he’s not. The story takes a number of twists and turns along the way as Zweig and his friends investigate Neumann, and where it ends up I won’t say but Wilson has crafted a fast reading and engaging existential mystery. Take away a star if you don’t appreciate philosophical mysteries and are frustrated by ambiguity.

This novel started slow, but it springs into life when Karl and Gustav finally meet. This is full of very interesting dialogue about the construction of personalities, the extent to which living is habit, and the importance of willpower on freedom.

ليس المقصود بالـ "الشك" الأمر الذي وقع به البروفيسور كارل تسفايغ تجاه تلميذه القديم جوستاف نيومن وإنما هو الشك الذي أحاط بنا نحن من نقرأ تتابع أحداث الرواية لنجد أننا نسائل أنفسنا بين سطورها عن حقيقة وجودنا، عن الغاية والوسيلة، عن قناعاتنا المتمثلة بسلوكياتنا اليومية وأهدافنا بعيدة المدى.
إن ظهور التلميذ المفاجئ في حياة البروفيسور كان بمثابة إعادة إحياء لأفكاره التي كان قد دفنها عميقاً تحت طبقاتٍ من القناعات المزيفة والطمأنينة الكاذبة، لذا كانت ملاحقته لتلميذه ليست للإيقاع به أو معرفة فيما إذا كان مجرماً أو بريئاً، وإنما ليعيد اكتشاف ذاته عبر رحلة في أفكار هذا التلميذ الذي تشرب أفكار أستاذه وأعاد إنتاجها.
لكن أكثر ما أثار إعجابي وذهولي هو الكيفية التي استطاع بها الكاتب أن يعرض لنا الفلسفة من منظور تطبيقي عملي، فقد نفخ الحياة في وجودية هيدغر وفي عدمية نيتشه وتعاليمهما التي كانت الرواية تعبق برائحتها في كل استعراض فلسفي تعبأ به الحوارات بين أبطال الرواية.
"القاتل هو الضحية الفعلية" .. إن فكرة كهذه تحتاج منا الكثير من التفكر، والرواية بالطبع لا تتحدث عن قاتل عادي يقتل من أجل المال أو الجنس أو سواهما من الرغائب الدنيا، وإنما تستعرض بحرص شديد على تصوير سيد الجريمة، الإنسان الذي يقتل ليحقق أكبر قدر من الحرية، هو استعراض مسرحي روماني لإرادة القوة التي تجعل من صاحبها سيداً على نفسه وتمنحه السيطرة التامة على حياته.
كذلك أبدع الكاتب في وصف النزاع النفسي القائم بين شجاعة العقل واستكانة القلب، وتمثل ذلك بالرحلة الفكرية للبروفيسور التي انتقل فيها من أفكاره النيتشوية الصارخة والمتمردة وحتى المتطرفة إلى صومعته المسيحية الآمنة والبسيطة التي خبّأ بها ذاته القديمة وخرج منها بصورة إنسان بسيط ينشد الحياة العادية كفرد في مجتمع.
وقعت كذلك بصراعي الداخلي الخاص إثر الكشف الطبي الذي تبدّى لنا في آخر صفحات الرواية – بوصفي طبيباً – كنت أجد صعوبةً بالغة في إقرار ما إذا كانت مثل تلك التجارب ضرورية من أجل الوصول بالبشرية إلى مستويات جديدة من التعقل والحكمة، أم أنها تجارب ستحمل في طياتها نتائج مدمرة على البشرية شأنها في ذلك شأن التجارب النووية والأسلحة البيولوجية الفتاكة!
لطالما فضلت هكذا نوع من النهايات المفتوحة التي تترك القارئ يخلق خاتمته الأنسب لمساقه الفكري الخاص، وبهذا أجد نفسي مسهباً النظر، ممعناً في شرودي أطالع آخر سطور الكتاب، "هل كان قاتلاً؟" .. "هل مات البروفيسور بالصورة التي رافقناه على طول أحداث الرواية، ليحيا من جديد بأفكاره القديمة؟" .. "هل كان تأثير المادة الدوائية مسيطراً على إرادة البروفيسور؟"؛ تبقى الأسئلة معلقة ولا تقل أهمية عن إجاباتها.
إن ظهور التلميذ المفاجئ في حياة البروفيسور كان بمثابة إعادة إحياء لأفكاره التي كان قد دفنها عميقاً تحت طبقاتٍ من القناعات المزيفة والطمأنينة الكاذبة، لذا كانت ملاحقته لتلميذه ليست للإيقاع به أو معرفة فيما إذا كان مجرماً أو بريئاً، وإنما ليعيد اكتشاف ذاته عبر رحلة في أفكار هذا التلميذ الذي تشرب أفكار أستاذه وأعاد إنتاجها.
لكن أكثر ما أثار إعجابي وذهولي هو الكيفية التي استطاع بها الكاتب أن يعرض لنا الفلسفة من منظور تطبيقي عملي، فقد نفخ الحياة في وجودية هيدغر وفي عدمية نيتشه وتعاليمهما التي كانت الرواية تعبق برائحتها في كل استعراض فلسفي تعبأ به الحوارات بين أبطال الرواية.
"القاتل هو الضحية الفعلية" .. إن فكرة كهذه تحتاج منا الكثير من التفكر، والرواية بالطبع لا تتحدث عن قاتل عادي يقتل من أجل المال أو الجنس أو سواهما من الرغائب الدنيا، وإنما تستعرض بحرص شديد على تصوير سيد الجريمة، الإنسان الذي يقتل ليحقق أكبر قدر من الحرية، هو استعراض مسرحي روماني لإرادة القوة التي تجعل من صاحبها سيداً على نفسه وتمنحه السيطرة التامة على حياته.
كذلك أبدع الكاتب في وصف النزاع النفسي القائم بين شجاعة العقل واستكانة القلب، وتمثل ذلك بالرحلة الفكرية للبروفيسور التي انتقل فيها من أفكاره النيتشوية الصارخة والمتمردة وحتى المتطرفة إلى صومعته المسيحية الآمنة والبسيطة التي خبّأ بها ذاته القديمة وخرج منها بصورة إنسان بسيط ينشد الحياة العادية كفرد في مجتمع.

i read this book when i was 16 ..this book is amazing it's about crimes, drugs, emotions and philosophy , this book fascinated me it is so thrilling when you are reading you feel just if you were inside it . this book is great it also talks about the jews' criminal methods ... the auther is so brilliant and bold and he has a fascinating writing style
i spent a very long time reading this book b/c it is long and it need much consentration to understand everything ..... I'm intending to read more of colin wilsons' works..

Um, no. This isn't a thriller. It doesn't startle. There is no suspense (unless you think the suspense comes from wondering whether Zweig will let Natasha seduce him).
This is a philosophy book. And the ending just... ends. I didn't mind the philosophy, but the story itself was rather stupid.

Le soir de Noël 1964, à Londres, le philosophe Karl Zweig croit reconnaître Gustav Neumann, l'un de ses anciens étudiants en Allemagne à la fin des années 20, alors qu'il s'engouffre dans un taxi en compagnie d'un vieux monsieur...
Troublé, il raconte le soir même à son ami Charles Grey, ancien patron de Scotland Yard, l'histoire du jeune Neumann : un étudiant juif extrêmement brillant mais ombrageux, en butte aux violences antisémites de l'époque.
Féru de philosophie et de Nietzsche, il projetait alors de devenir un « maître du crime » pour « prendre le parti des dieux contre les humains »... Simple délire d'adolescent ? Voire...
Par la suite, deux hommes vieux et riches, dont Neumann était devenu le secrétaire, avaient trouvé la mort dans des circonstances mystérieuses, en lui laissant, à chaque fois, une grosse somme d'argent...
L'ancien patron du Yard, qui s'intéresse à l'énigme, découvre vite que Neumann pourrait bien être impliqué dans une troisième mort suspecte.
Karl Zweig et Charles Grey se lancent alors, sur les routes de la campagne anglaise couverte de neige, dans une véritable « chasse au meurtrier » afin d'en avoir le coeur net et de protéger, le cas échéant, le vieil homme du taxi...
On retrouve dans ce roman d'énigme brillant et ironique, typiquement « wilsonien », les thèmes de prédilection de Colin Wilson, comme l'hypnotisme, les drogues destinées à élargir le champ de la conscience et la quête de la liberté.

I read this during a break from seminary study, having picked it up simply because it was by Colin Wilson--sometimes an inspired genius. Well, he wasn't inspired on this one. The novel was so tedious that I barely finished it.

This was an OK read, but somehow it didn''t leave any taste in my mouth at all. There was so much discussion about what it all meant that you sort of lost track of the detection-of-a-killer angle.
