What an intriguing and creatively penned paranormal fantasy story! Hell Gate is irresistible fun and addictively page-turning. Brimming with suspense and adventure, fiercely romantic, and deliciously sexy, this story captivated me completely. And with Veronica’s trademark character chemistry and an alluring and well-built demon-filled world, you’ll be utterly seduced by these characters. I loved this story! AND SERIOUSLY HOLY HOTNESS! If this is the kind of heat you find in hell, take me through that gate! Because this is Veronica's spiciest book to date- melted hearts and panties. The perfect seduction.
This is Veronica Eden like you’ve never seen her before- and not only because of the paranormal spin and the reverse harem love story. But it plays to all over Veronica’s deftly handled autorial strengths - her keen and captivating world building, dynamically intense and complicated character chemistry, and flawed, edgy, but redemptive character journeys that both move and entertain. All creatively woven into this whole new world full of fae and demons, hell hounds and hellfire, and the twisted and maniacal machinations of Hell’s magical creatures. I won’t spoil the plot, because that’s half the fun- this is a big ole adventure story with a lot of action, danger, and steam- but I will say that Veronica weaves such an intricately and creatively inspired web of politics and hellish intrigue. It’s edge of your seat riding while also just being a whole lot of fun.
But at the center, like always, are characters that are equal parts complicated and fascinating. The substance and layers of a heroine can often make or break a harem construction, and I have to say that Veronica truly WOWs with our heroine. She had me at a curvy, sassy, ginger heroine- but then Lily just stole my whole heart. She’s tough, she’s resilient, but she’s also so breathtakingly vulnerable, a heroine that embodies every insecurity and fear of rejection that we all as humans shroud ourselves in. She’s feisty while being open hearted. And I loved her character journey- the ways in which these men and this adventure help her really take the time to sit in her discomfort and confront her own demons. And in doing so, she taps into her true power and finds the love she’s always craved- not because someone rescued her or “saved her, but because she finds HERSELF. Her journey is all about identity and belonging,
AND THESE GUYS. I’ve always loved a Veronica Eden man, so give me three and help me JAYSUS. Not only are they physically distinctive, but they are emotionally distinctive, something quite astounding given that this is a single POV story. But that only helps enrich their characterization and mystery, as we understand them through Lily’s eyes. Each progresses as a love interest at a different pace, which gives each a time to shine, each has their own backstory and personality, and their behaviors and dialogue have a unique character stamp. Veronica ensures we have clear emotive ties between LIly and each, while also building a team and family dynamic. It’s reverse harem done right- because it all works.
The chemistry is mesmerizing, or perhaps I should say chemistiries since again each coupling within the harem works brilliantly. There is an insta quality given the mating dynamic, but Veronica breathes emotive substance and complexity into a physiological beginning. The heart and soul of these connections truly shines. And y’all- THIS BOOK IS HOT. Veronica’s hottest And not just because we’ve got an abundance of demon D to nom on, but Veronica gets really creative with not just the plural partners but their demon….attributes. GIVE ME ALL THIS KINKY DEMON FUCKERY. NOt only is it sexy, but's creative- it felt fresh, inventive, and like I needed 50 cold showers because I myself had been dancing in the hellfire.
And while this book is HOT and super fun, what I loved most of all is how this steamy, demonic, fun paranormal romp is infused with a thematic tinge that really gives it staying power. Hell Gate is about belonging, about discovering yourself and figuring out just where you FIT in this big wide world. Displacement, abandonment, rejection, and fear - those are the REAL demons, and often we find ourselves at our lowest, when it’s the hardest, when we lean into our discomfort and accept what makes us special. Our otherness may be a catalyst to belonging, to true connection- perhaps even in the places we least expect it. Even Hell’s door.
Loved this world so much! Can’t wait for more PNR Veronica Eden!
