As a book which has been written for and celebrates the life of the Maori people then I would say that this is as close to perfect as you can get. Long time resident of NZ, Ron Bacon, an Australian by birth, works well with native NZer, Robert Jahnke in telling the story of the oldest tohunga who promises his people to build them a great canoe worthy of the name Fish of our Fathers.
Although, at first, I was thrown by how much text there was to read, the story reads so nicely aloud and the illustrations are clearly carefully done and nod to the more traditional art style from the Maori people. Great care has been taken to preserve the language as well as the culture and traditions which the storytellers are celebrating.
