I read the first book in this series at the end of 2017 and then left it on the backburner because I was already engaged in this author's Molly Murphy series. Well Molly has become a bit morose and her relationship with Daniel is going nowhere fast so I am giving that a breather for while..
In the meantime Lady Georgiana is much better entertainment. She is funny and her actions are a lot more light hearted than poor Molly's. I also enjoy her supporting characters more, especially her crazy mother and her rock solid grandfather. Oh and the Queen of course. She is just wonderful.
In this second book Georgie is instructed by the Queen to care for a visiting princess from Bavaria who she hopes may tempt Prince David away from Wallis Simpson. We all know that will not work, but the princess leads Georgie into all kinds of difficulties. All good fun and I am looking forward to book three.

4.3 Stars - Simply wonderfully cozy 9 hrs mystery fun

My latest reading passion (started last fall) are all these lighthearted cozy mysteri novels. A genre even better as audiobooks. I really liked the serial starter, Her Royal Spyness (4.2), back in January. It was with a good feeling I started this second part.

This Rhys Bowen serial could probably be a future favorite of mine. Not a lot of hot romance stuff (and fuss) but with a truly entertaining action-packed female chick lit feel during the interwar period. And there is a dashing goodlooking Irish mysterious hero to dream about. — A Royal Pain had it all. I'm Georgie addictive by now.
I listened to the audiobook (9 hrs) this time too. Flawlessly well and enjoying narrated by Katherine Kellgren. She is one of the best for this kind of stories.

Once again I expected more, and once again I find myself dissatisfied. It takes forever for the 'mystery' to begin in full force. Georgie is repetitive, whiny, and incredibly dense. Like the first book, she doesn't really solve anything but gets thrown into the answer by the villain's actions - always conveniently at the right time/place.
On top of that, the writing was jarring. The choice of words from characters, the incredible articulation of anti-communist proponents, and all the 'haha, Adolph Hitler!' didn't seem to fit with the plot at all. Either this is the 1930s or its not.
What I disliked the most, however, is the constant bombardment about sex. It is a topic of conversation from almost every character and it is very much obnoxious and crude. Even minor characters are thrown into awkward and horrible situations. In fact, I think I might be done with this series for the near rape scene alone.
Yet despite the fact that this book has almost nothing going for it, there is something rather likable in the setting. I find I am drawn back. We'll see.
ALSO, once again I must complain, Georgie is not a blond. What is up with you cover-designers

A fun vacation read. I enjoyed the antics in this book.
Lady Georgie is 34th in line for the throne, but penniless and living in London without an allowance.
In this story, she does some maturing in terms of seeing people as equals.
As in the first book, the mystery is a small part of the story. This series is a fun, light, fluffy look at social status and society.....with a few dead bodies and mystery sprinkled throughout.
A fun read.

Let me start by saying I rate my cozy mysteries different than all other genres of books I read. I still use a five star rating system (or with cozies I like to think instead of stars how many cups of coffee/tea.….which is my idea of cozy). The following is how I rate my cozies:
1 cup of coffee- did not finish or will not continue on in series.
2 cups of coffee- this book has potential, but on the fence about whether I will read the next book.
3 cups of coffee- good- will definitely continue series, but did have some issues
4 cups of coffee- great- will definitely continue series- minor issues
5 cups of coffee-EXCEPTIONAL!
What I think about when I give my ratings:
1.) There called cozies for a reason, and that being said I know they are not for everybody. I love them!! Therefore the first thing I think about is how cozy are they? The more cheese the better for me…lol. The horrible puns in the titles…LOVE THEM. Yes…if you’re wondering... I am the person who loves laffy taffy jokes.
2.) Characters/ and relationships with secondary characters
3.) Setting/theme
4.) The mystery
I tried...I tried to tell Georgie that nothing good comes from being summoned to Buckingham palace for tea with HM. She insisted that when HM summons you go. So that’s how it all started….
Broke, no servants, and we have to take in a baroness?? Seriously...ugg...this can’t go well. We did threaten...I mean talk Georgie’s brother Binky and sister-in-law Fig to send some money, and persuaded her grandfather and his neighbor friend to fill in as a butler and maid….I mean what could go wrong??lol.
When the Baroness arrived we were shocked by her obsession with “gansters”, American slang...not to mention her tendencies towards the “five finger discount”.
Soon the bodies are piling up….and enter in Chief Inspector Burnell...yeah...Georgie is defiently not his favorite gal.
This series is a royal delight! I love all Georgie’s antics, Belinda’s romps, Darcy, Binky, and even Fig. The mystery is fun, fast-paced, and kept me guessing. If you enjoy historical cozies I royally recommend this book!

I wasn't very interested in the communist aspect of this mystery but I really enjoyed the Princess (sometimes) and the house parties. Darcy and Belinda should've been in here more but it's okay, I know I'll see them plenty in future books. Yet more parties that I enjoyed, plus the added royals and Mrs. Simpson.

In this instalment, Georgie has been asked by the Queen to entertain a visiting foreign Princess, who the Queen hopes will catch the eye of the Prince of Wales and turn him away from “that dreadful Simpson woman”. But things are never simple & before long there are dead bodies, communists & shoplifting to deal with all while attending Royal Functions, Parties with the Smart Set & visits to the country with very little money & hiding her secret cleaning business from the world. And of course, the mysterious (& gorgeous) Darcy O’Mara popping in & out to save the day.
11/10 for the audio narration by Katherine Kellgren She really makes the book I believe.

What a hysterical and riotous treat this series is turning out to be. Had P. G. Wodehouse ever written mysteries - I can see them having felt like this.

As you might have guessed, I am burning my way through this series at an alarming rate. Not even half way through the first book, I had to order the rest of the books in the series because I knew that I would be reading all of them in a matter of weeks.
I have read the latest book in this series, Four Weddings and Maybe a Funeral (the last book to date)….I know—don’t ask me why but I read them completely out of order and I figured that I better remedy that situation and start from the beginning.
But I wasn’t expecting to love this series as much as I do! The books are easy breezy reads and I have no trouble racing through them in a matter of days. They are interesting and simply fun!
I think one of the things that I like best about this series is how fast each novel is. The mystery isn’t over complicated but yet there are enough red herrings and leads that keep me guessing and wondering who might have killed someone and why. I don’t have to sit and ponder and agonize over every little detail, but rather I can sit and look at the suspects and motives and sift through them and pick them up and examine them and set them down again. It’s hard to explain but this mystery series truly has an armchair detective feel and I love it. Its like solving a puzzle but at your leisure.
I simply adore Georgie. She is absolutely hysterical, without even trying to be! I love how witty, sassy, and dry she is. I can’t get enough of her. She is someone who I would love to hang out with in real life. She kills me, but in a good way! There were plenty of times in this book where I laughed out loud at something she said or did and thought, my god she is me! Georgie is the absolute best!
The only thing that I felt like this novel was missing was more of Darcy. I love Darcy and Georgie together especially, but Darcy brings an element of humor and charm to the story and I wished there had been more of him in this book, but I am eager for the next book (which I have at the ready of course) so I can get more of him! If you haven’t started this series, you need to. It’s fast paced, entertaining, and contains a spot of romance so basically you can’t go wrong with this one!
Also, the ending was brilliant. I didn’t see that coming and I was throughly surprised at the identity of the killer and the motive! Well done!

"A Royal Pain" is the second in the Lady Georgiana series by Rhys Bowen. In this one, set in Depression era London, Georgie's house cleaning business isn't going that well but she is scraping by, living alone in Rannoch House and eating baked beans and toast. One day she is summoned to Buck House by Queen Mary. It seems the Queen is very concerned about her son David's inappropriate attachment to "that awful American woman", Wallis Simpson, and has decided to try to entice him to a more suitable girl. Georgie is shocked and much dismayed to hear that the Queen has invited Princess Hannelore of Bavaria to London and that she will be staying with Georgie at Rannoch House!
Georgie agrees (one never says "no" to Her Majesty) and then sets about trying to find a way to get servants to help at Rannoch House and enough money to feed the entourage coming from Bavaria. She finds a cook and a butler when she enlists the unlikely help of her Cockney grandfather and his neighbor/lady-friend, Mrs. Huggins, who agree to come to the house and give her a hand. The Princess and her companion, Baroness Rottenmeister, show up a few days later and Lady Georgie finds herself with quite a handful in Princess Hanni.
As the story unfolds, dead bodies begin piling up and Georgie is once again asked to help sort out what is happening. There are Communists and debauched nobility, drugs and wild parties. All in all, it's a pretty entertaining story with a decent mystery and of course a little romance as Lady Georgie trys to find the right man for her and avoid Lord "Fishface" or being sent to the country to be a companion to her old maid aunt.

Those series are handy for quick and light reading when I can't sleep. The plot is simple, but enjoyable, and I don't have to concentrate to solve the mystery parts.

More fun with our favorite 26th in line to the throne. The Queen wants Georgie to help throw a monkey wrench into her son's relationship with a certain American woman, Wallace Simpson. Dead bodies keep showing up in Georgie's vicinity. Then there is the Bavarian princess that Georgie has to keep an eye on...

Rhys Bowen's A Royal Pain, the follow up to Her Royal Spyness, is as good if not better than the first book! I thoroughly enjoyed this from beginning to end, and even have the dark eye circles to show for it. I simply could not put it down.
We meet Georgie again, who's still dealing rather matter-of-factly with her penniless existence and is as humorous and witty as ever. To make her life worse (and amuse us further), the Queen's decided that visiting Princess Hannelore (Hanni) of Bavaria should stay with Georgie for an undetermined length of time, and this princess is not only boy-mad, but has a shoplifting habit. Along the way, we get a lot more Darcy, more Granddad and meet a whole host of interesting new characters.
Despite my love for the first book, I winced a bit at the thought of this dreaded royal pain, Princess Hanni, taking up a great deal of time in this second one. It's very hard to like a brat! Imagine my relief when I realized she might have her annoying sides, but she's impossible not to like. Without leaving any spoilers, I must say that Hanni gets increasingly interesting as her role in the bigger picture is revealed.
Another positive result of Hanni's appearance is that Darcy and Georgie's previously stalled relationship has been kicked into gear again upped a notch! A Royal Pain reveals a great deal more about Darcy's mysterious background and hints that his "guardian angel" habit of being there whenever Georgie needs him has much deeper implications than just coincidence or a show of his interest in her. Despite Georgie's insecurity, Darcy clearly cares deeply for her. I can't wait to see more developments in the next book.
Like in Her Royal Spyness, the murder mystery is set into motion reasonably early on, but only really takes center stage in the latter third of the book. We meet Georgie again, who's still dealing rather matter-of-factly with her penniless existence and is as humorous and witty as ever. To make her life worse (and amuse us further), the Queen's decided that visiting Princess Hannelore (Hanni) of Bavaria should stay with Georgie for an undetermined length of time, and this princess is not only boy-mad, but has a shoplifting habit. Along the way, we get a lot more Darcy, more Granddad and meet a whole host of interesting new characters.
Despite my love for the first book, I winced a bit at the thought of this dreaded royal pain, Princess Hanni, taking up a great deal of time in this second one. It's very hard to like a brat! Imagine my relief when I realized she might have her annoying sides, but she's impossible not to like. Without leaving any spoilers, I must say that Hanni gets increasingly interesting as her role in the bigger picture is revealed.
Another positive result of Hanni's appearance is that Darcy and Georgie's previously stalled relationship has been kicked into gear again upped a notch! A Royal Pain reveals a great deal more about Darcy's mysterious background and hints that his "guardian angel" habit of being there whenever Georgie needs him has much deeper implications than just coincidence or a show of his interest in her. Despite Georgie's insecurity, Darcy clearly cares deeply for her. I can't wait to see more developments in the next book.

Lady Georgiana Rannach plays hostess to a Bavarian Princess with a penchant for trouble, and soon finds herself embroiled in another murder investigation when she and the princess stumble across a dead body in a bookshop.
The pacing of this sequel is slightly off with the first half of the story dedicated to Georgie's annoying houseguests. Thankfully, the mystery comes along just in time and gets interesting once the bodies start piling up.
While Georgie is a charming and likable heroine, she can be very obtuse at times and is oblivious to the clues even when they are staring her in the face. Consequently, the identity of the culprits is glaringly obvious to the reader, but Georgie fails to see it until it is almost too late.
On the romance front, Georgie's relationship with Darcy O'Mara is clearly on the slow burn side. Speaking of O'Mara, there are hints in this one that there is more to him than meets the eye ...
Kathrine Kellgren's narration of the audiobook is fantastic, and I was sad to learn from another listener that she passed away recently.
Overall, a slow beginning but entertaining nonetheless.

A Royal Pain is book 2 in the Her Royal Spyness Mysteries by Rhys Bowen. The Queen of England was worried about her eldest son relationship with an American woman. Using Lady Georgiana to entertain a Bavarian princess to allure her son away from her. However, for Lady Georgiana, this assignment was a nightmare and bodies started to pile up. The readers of A Royal Pain will continue to follow Lady Georgiana to see if the Princes of Wales marries the Bavarian princess.
A Royal Pain is the second book I read in this series and love it. A Royal Pain was a mystery with dead bodies everywhere. However, I could not stop laughing with some of the antics that the characters get up to throughout the book. A Royal Pain is well written and researched by Rhys Bowen, and I enjoy that she throws in a little bit of English Royal History within the plot. I like Rhys Bowen portrayal of her characters and the way they interact with each other. Rhys Bowen does a fantastic job of describing her settings that allows me to be transported back to early nineteen century London.

I simply loved this second installment of the continuing adventures of Lady Georgiana. I found much of it hilarious and on audio it is a scream! It really comes through with Hanni's German accent and her "gangster-speak." Katherine Hellgren, the narrator does a great job, as usual, with all the accents, it makes it so much fun to listen to. I think it really enhances all of it, especially the voices of all the males with their 1930's cant, like Gussie and poor Tubby. It really makes me feel like I'm living it up in London's high society in the 1930's! I love this decade! My only gripe is the elusive Irishman, Darcy is not as prevalent here as in the first book, but I loved the ending, so it made up for it. All in all, this is becoming a favorite series of mine, can't wait to listen to the next one!

I give this story and the audiobook narrator 5 stars. The voices and different types of characters are done amazingly well! I'm hooked on the series and have already started book 3!

I read the first book in this cozy historical mystery series back in 2014. I liked it but obviously wasn't impressed enough to continue with the series at that time. For whatever reason, I decided to finally get around to book two though I decided to listen to the audiobook this time. And, boy, what a difference that made! The female narrator was awesome! Not only did she do an excellent job of differentiating all the voices, male and female, but she injected a sense of humor into her narration that I'm not sure would've come across if I had read this myself. I especially got a kick out of the way she read the roles of Belinda and the visiting Bavarian princess.
It's still what I would call murder lite - and once again people don't start dropping dead until after the halfway mark - but even as just a bit of historical fiction it's still a lot of fun and an extremely pleasant way to spend a few hours. Lady Georgiana is thoroughly likeable and fairly grounded. And, like her, I'm interested in getting to know the Honorable Darcy O'Mara a lot better.

As with the first book in this series, the audio narration is what sets this book apart. Katherine Kellgren is AMAZING. She takes what might be a run-of-the-mill British mystery book and makes it fun and engaging. I can't state it enough. She is PHENOMENAL. As for the story itself, there is A LOT of setup. It is probably misleading to call it setup because lots of the first half of the book don't really matter when it comes to the mystery at the end of the story. If I were reading it myself I might have been irritated by this, but listening to the story I just felt like I was on for the ride as we get to see the foibles and daily life of Georgie, a British aristocrat who is learning to live life as a regular working girl. The cast of characters in these stories are fun with their own set of idiosyncrasies and interesting personalities. If you are reading this for the mystery I would say ... it's not really that strong of a mystery. I was able to see who the culprit would be almost from the beginning. I never felt any suspense about this at all. If you are reading this for the romance I would say ... it's not really that strong of a romance. Nothing really gets pushed forward on that front in this novel. But just like it is fun to watch television shows that drop us into the lives of interesting characters this book succeeds in creating an interesting world where I don't mind hanging out with these people for a bit every once in awhile. I don't think I could ever binge listen to this series, but I have enjoyed jumping into this world from time to time. Trust me ... grab the audio book of this one. It makes all the difference. Four stars. I really liked it.

I enjoyed this second novel about Lady Georgianna "Georgie" Rannoch. Even though it is a mystery that has several murders, overall, it is lighthearted and fun. I like the character of Georgie, and her misadventures are a delight to read.
Lady Georgianna Rannoch, thirty-fourth in line for the British throne, is summoned to tea by the queen. This is never a good omen for Georgie. When she is received by the queen, she is asked to entertain a young, German princess as her houseguest. Georgie, knowing she can't refuse the queen, agrees, but is faced with numerous problems in having a visitor. Since her family is almost destitute, Georgie's allowance has been cut off. Georgie has been living alone in her family's London home with no servants, and most of the rooms are closed up. She has no money, so she eats baked beans. She is at a loss as to how she will find servants and food, but she puts her mind to it and comes up with a plan. Georgie asks her grandfather and his neighbor to help out by pretending to be her butler and her cook. She talks her brother, Binky, into sending a small amount of money for food and a maid by threatening to bring the German princess to Scotland to be his houseguest.
When the princess, Hannelore "Hanni" arrives, Georgie's life becomes even more complicated. The princess insists on using unseemly American euphemisms when she speaks, and is much too interested in gangsters. Georgie has her work cut out trying to keep the princess in line. The princess shoplifts, chases numerous young men, and acts decidedly improper on most occasions. Georgie thinks she already has her hands full, but then the bodies start to pile up. Within a week, Georgie sees one person fall to his death in what appears to be an accident, finds one young man stabbed to death, and has to deal with the loss of the princess' companion from an apparent heart attack. As Georgie discovers some political motivations that make the deaths seem too coincidental, she tries to tie the events together. All the while, she is watching Darcy O'Mara, a destitute young man that she has a secret attachment to, as he seems to bask in Princess Hanni's attentions.

But queens never consider money, of which I have little. And which is why I moonlight as a maid-in-disguise. My plans:
1) Clean house in manner of palace.
2) Blackmail brother, Binky, into sending a few quid.
3) Unteach Princess Hanni English from gangster movies -- lest she address the queen as "old broad."
4) Keep eye on princess at parties, where she drinks like a fish.
Then there's the matter of the body in the bookshop and Hanni's unwitting involvement with the communist party. It's enough to drive a girl mad...'

Hanni wore the same pink affair she had worn to dinner the first night. She looked the way a princess should look in fairy stories. I half expected to see her followed by dwarfs…
Princess Hannelore is more trouble than she’s worth, fixated by gangster movies and men, light-fingered in department stores, rescued time and again by Georgiana’s occasional squeeze, the Hon. Darcy O’Mara, son and heir of Lord Kilhenny. The glamorous Hyde Park party (cue: accidental death) is counter-balanced by the poor queueing for soup kitchens, but when a murder occurs in Wapping half way through I had already lost interest. (My guess: the maid did it).
I had read another in the series, Heirs and Graces, but this one did nothing for me. DNF at page 150.

I'm really loving this series. Georgie has been tasked with entertaining a Bavarian princess by the Queen. But Princess Hanni gets both herself and Georgie in trouble when she wants to meet with a young communist fellow who is found stabbed to death. Georgie works to solve the case before it can turn into an international incident. Another fun and entertaining entry!

The first book of a series always sets the tone and the bar for the entire series, especially if it's supposed to be murder mysteries. The first book of this introduced our cast of characters with:
Georgie: main character, intrepid, daring but not foolish
Granddad: Cockney, former copper, fount of wisdom in all things practical
Belinda: Georgie's female friend, maneater, possible alcoholic, gambler, always urges Georgie to lose her virginity
Darcy O'Mara: male love interest, impoverished Irish lord's only son, always appears in the nick of time as though he's stalking Georgie, no other redeeming characteristic except that he is incredibly, jaw-droppingly good-looking
David, Prince of Wales: the Edward that gets involved with Wallis Simpson--no idea why he's referred to as Edward
The Queen: would have been a black market antiques dealer/thief in another life, always takes a slice of brown bread at tea, sighs over her tea and murmurs "a bad business, this," useless at actually doing anything
Binky: Georgie's brother, Duke of Glen Garry and Rannoch, strapped for cash, idiotic but harmless, a large, wide man
Fig: Binky's wife and Georgie's sister-in-law, extremely penny-pinching and jealous of Georgie's connections to royalty, incredibly annoying; penny-pinching constantly used as a plot device
Georgie's Need for Money to Survive: Also mainly a plot device and sometimes is more severe or less severe depending on whether Georgie really needs a new pair of shoes that she can't afford
All that was fine and dandy in the first book because Georgie was not an idiot who made idiotic decisions that caused unnecessary turmoil in her life. In this book, however, the entire setup was iffy. In order that Georgie is put into close proximity with the Princess of Bavaria, fresh out of a convent and about to be matchmade with the Prince of Wales by the Queen, Georgie needs to give her room and board.
While on paper this might have been a cute and fun idea, in execution, it failed utterly because Georgie is dirt-poor to the point that she's cleaning people's houses. She has no servants in the London house she stays in and instead of saying so to the Queen--as this sort of expectation is quite an imposition on anyone, she nods dumbly and ropes her grandfather and his love interest into "working for her." Free of charge, of course, because she's dirt-poor. None of this makes a bit of sense, because he's an elderly retired man--why would he want to give up his freedom and retirement to go into slave labor? The reason (trying to play hide and seek with the bailiffs) doesn't make that much sense.
The REAL reason is so that her grandfather can give her "clues" in the form of saying that the Princess is a shady bit. It really wasn't that great of a clue and didn't outweigh the great inconvenience of the entire plot device, which was so illogical that it made Georgie seem idiotic as a result. The best clue as to the killer didn't even come from the grandfather's endless meddling, but from Georgie's mother, who gave away that the Princess wasn't the same person she saw a year ago. That and the Princess's unforeseen confession as to her favorite mountains in her country (the one listed wasn't even in her country).
All those and the unending copy editing errors made my eyes spin. There were dropped conjunctions and mismatched tenses all over the place. If the first book had about three errors all told, this book had uncountable ones--I would number them above fifteen at least. That's just way too shoddy for a book that was nominated for so many awards, even if it only happened in the Kindle version.

If the first book had about three errors all told, this book had uncountable ones--I would number them above fifteen at least. That's just way too shoddy for a book that was nominated for so many awards, even if it only happened in the Kindle version.
