And he loves the little calf in the next stall, whom he purrs to sleep with his soft motor. Otis is a spunky little tractor and seems to have all those on the farm working effectively. When he is not helping the farmer, Otis plays with the animals and builds strong relationship with them. When a new calf becomes his neighbour in barn, Otis is overjoyed and adds the young one to his regular fun and games. However, the farmer chooses to replace Otis with a large tractor, sending Otis out back to live among the growing weeds. When the calf gets into trouble, only Otis can help, but will i ...more

4.5 STARS. I so wanted to love this book and think maybe I placed my expectations too high since I'd been desperately wanting to read it ever since I saw it in a bookstore before Christmas. In the end, by the time I read my library copy, I really, really liked it but it lacked that extra "something" to make it really a standout in my mind. Even so, I highly recommend it! Long's inspiration is from classic children's books such as The Story of Ferdinand and Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel (whi ...more

Otis brings an interesting character to the picture book world - an old tractor on a farm. I teach in a suburban district, but in an area where a lot of people in our building come from rural homes. My principal runs a farm, and he has shared this one with students as his favorite tale for the last couple of years. It's a touching story, and beautifully illustrated. It's amazing how creative children's authors and illustrators can be around the theme of friendship.

Probably the most beautiful and well-written picture of the decade, hands down. Loren Long has brought back the wistful joy of children's books from long ago, in the style of Virginia Lee Burton. This enchanting tale of friendship between a calf and a small red tractor touches your heart, as you feel yourself transported to another time where no one was in a rush, and you could take in the beauty of nature around you at your leisure. Otis the Tractor traipses through the fields with his friend t ...more

Cute illustrations can't save a too long book with too many plots.
The tractor and the cow are friends! Oh no, here comes a new tractor! Oh, the farmer wants to put the cow in the beauty contest! Oh no, the cow is caught in the mud! The cow is afraid of new tractor! Old tractor saves cow! Cow doesn't need beauty contest! Blah, blah, blah. Who is this book for, exactly?

Too many ideas muddle what could have been a sweet little title.

A sweet story about the comfort an old, caring tractor brings to a lonely calf and the friendship that blooms between them. This seems like such a classic story and the illustrations had a timeless feel to them that I simply loved! The text was fairly predictable, but the story was told with warmth and tenderness (in both words and illustrations) and I couldn't help but be touched by the story.

1. Otis Is the story about an old tractor named Otis. He and his framer take care of the fields all day. At the end of the day Otis goes out and plays near the mud pond, jumps over bales of hay, and sits under the apple tree watching his farm. One day a little calf shows up and befriends Otis, they become best friends until the day the farmer buys a new tractor. Otis gets moved out of the barn and the calf gets sad. The farmer wants to enter the calf in a contest but cannot find

This is a wonderful story about a little tractor who finds a way to be relevant, even after being replaced by a bigger, shinier, and newer tractor. The illustrations are great and complement the story very nicely. We read the next book, Otis and the Tornado first, and then discovered this one. We really enjoyed reading both of them and would like to read more about this plucky little tractor.

Otis Took part in the We Give Books read a thon this afternoon. Everyone, everywhere read Otis with the hopes of breaking a record which I do not yet know the results.
Did love this story though of a little tractor and a little calf who become best friends. Love the message that sometimes things, in this case a tractor, cannot be replaced by the new and more modern, because it has benefits all it's own. Will buy this book for my tractor loving three year old grandson, Jake.

This book was on the Golden Sower Nominee 2011-2012 list. This book is geared toward prek- 2nd grade children. The main characters in the story are a tractor and a calf, so younger children will find the characters to be more believable.

Cute story for kids who can't get enough of tractor stories. This would make a nice alternative for parents who are sick of the endless line of Thomas the Tank Engine books.

This is such a wonderful story about friendship and loyalty. I would love reading this to students then explain the meaning of being a loyal friend. This book could be especially useful in the beginning of the year when you're wanting students to bond and become a community of learners. You can explain how you want them to be like Otis and the calf, helping each other out and keeping each other company. This could be especially useful in a 2nd or 3rd grade cl

Loren Long creates the most endearing and lovable little tractor character perfect for the story of Otis. This picture book depicts friendship and perseverance wonderfully, and children will love the fun and sweet illustrations. I especially love the illustration with the back of the calfs head showing Otis in the background hurrying to come save his friend!

Otis and the Little Calf have an unusual friendship, but it's powerful too. Read it to my son last night, but he just kept asking "Where's the big yellow tractor?" (who replaced Otis).

"Otis" is a primary book that is an example of the modern fantasy fiction genre. The book is about an old tractor that gets replaced by a new tractor, but finds friendship with the farmer's calf. The tractor ends up finding purpose by being friends with the calf. The pre-reading strategy that I would use with this book is Shared Reading. With this strategy, children are able to read through the story with the rest of the class for better understanding. In addition, as I read the story aloud, I w ...more

Set a toy tractor in a preschool or kindergarten room and many a boy will drop his plastic dinosaur to take the vehicle for a joyride.

A few collisions may ensue, but the tractor (and its casualties—a mix of dolls, Matchbox cars and, yes, plastic dinosaurs) quickly recover. Cats have nine lives. Tractors and plastic dinosaurs? Nine thousand.

Otis by Loren Long is a cute story about how an old tractor and a young calf become friends. Otis works and plays on the farm after his days in the fields are complete. One day Otis gets replaced by a new tractor that is big and yellow. The new tractor is placed in next to the calf's stall where Otis used to sleep. The calf complains that the new tractor is very loud when he sleeps compared to Otis's soothing hum. Otis gets into a funk when he is left behind the barn to rust. One day the calf ge ...more

I grew up in Lexington, Kentucky in the 1970’s. We had no artists of any kind in the family. We didn’t know any artists. I liked sports, especially baseball. My mother read to me a lot. But I have to admit, my favorite subject in school was gym class. I also liked to draw. My parents encouraged me to keep drawing.
