In Oh! Calcutta! Kenneth Tynan has assembled a group of sketches which deal with almost every conceivable erotic fantasy and sexual reality that Western man has dreamt up or experienced. The distinguished roster of authors includes Samuel Beckett, Edna O'Brien, Jules Feiffer, Leonard Melfi, John Lennon, and, not to be outdone, Kenneth Tynan himself.
Its like when you and your brothers cause so much ruckus late nights that your mom and dad say "fine, you can stay up and smoke whatever youre smoking because i already know that you do, and you can do whatever you do in the basement with your comics and making your own monster movies, just keep it downstairs and keep it down for chrissake" and then you and your brothers sorta look at each other wonder what to do now to have fun now that its reached its breaking point and your creative aspirations are reduced to making "drink vinegar and try not to vomit" games and looking at paintings of Adam and Eve and laughing about the fact that they're naked and thinking its really punk or whatever but really, i mean really, if your parents had just given you snide remarks every morning about your late night basement games while you were trying to eat your Sugar Puff Honey Crumbles, then maybe it would have pushed you to really level it up and think about why exactly it is that pot makes you think about what it is you're thinking and why, and why it is that we need to think at all instead of just being big hairy beetles crawling on top of each other when the urge presents itself, or really ponder why Eve felt it irresistible to try something that was previously not terribly appealing, just because she was forbidden to try it, and she was told that it was sweeter than it really was, and brother sister man, let me tell ya, after you think about those things until you're 20 or whatever, you sorta lose interest and the games lose their integrity and you have to get a job at Herbert's Deli and the novelty of walking around the house naked on ten hits of acid has worn off and you look at the Eden painting you painted with a crusted spoon that you thought was pretty racy and you just see a stick figure with an overbite hiding her shame in a bush made of eyelids and its probably called Forbidden Pleasures and Unseen Savageries. But if you were proud of it and released it to the public, it might be comparable to this Hippie Yippie Mugwump collection of plays here. Me, I know my place. And thats scrubbing up these cheese sandwich flakes here at Herbert's Deli.
