With COVID19 going around, making it hard to concentrate, looking at the many photos of the Cows on Parade in 1999 in our great city of Chicago was a pleasant respite from reality. The creativity of the artists is an inspiration to art, humor, history and life. There was just enough informative text to make me count this as "reading" a book. Yes, I highly recommend it.

Kind of an exhibit catalog of an art project done in Chicago at the end of the 20th century where numerous artists, solo and in groups, professional and amateur, painted cows which were placed throughout the city. A fun project which I wish I could have experienced at the time. I'd be interested in knowing if any of the cows are still extant.

At the risk of stating the obvious, cows and Chicago, perfect together. Why? Chi-cow-go is the commerce center of the agricultural Midwest. The Union Stockyards were the beginning of the massive agri-business that brought wealth to this region. And, speaking of wealth, the theme of LaSalle Street and the hopes for "bull markets" are always on the minds of the natives.

This highly illustrated book covers the artistic celebration of cows during 1999, when 300 artists were able to decorate these life-size statues with anything: gumdrops, mirrors, decals, etc. The results are examined on a cow-by-cow basis and serve as a window into the thoughts of artists and observers alike. Many other cities and communities have chosen to support the arts and build spirit by following their lead.

Well done, Chicago!

not nearly as interesting or fun or as big as the cow book about dallas/houston.
the story about acclimating the live horses to the fiberglass cows was worth reading.
several of the pictures were split page making them hard to look at, including the cow done for the guy that came up w/the idea. lousy payback for him
