This is definitely a period piece and might appear to seem alien to people who do not understand the love of books as artifacts in themselves.
The book recounts a bit of Schwartz early life but most of it chronicles the ups and downs of his life as a bookseller from about 1927 to 1977, primarily in Milwaukee. Battles with publishers, landlords, eccentric collectors, the incursion of the feared mass market paperback, and the advent of such corporate giants (at the time) of B. Dalton and Walden Books in every one of thousands of malls across the country: these were some of the challenges before the days of Amazon. Not to mention the Great Recession of the early 1930s, where in order to survive he took the startling step of operating a lending library of pornographic works!
I took one star off due to the extreme niche nature of this work. It's more a vanity project than a literary production, but at this late date it rises to the level of a historical document about the publishing and book selling trades of the mid-1900s.
The self-published book was nicely printed and bound in a burgundy cloth with foil stamping on the spine.
