It's summer vacation, and Sassy and her family are headed to Florida to visit Grammy for her birthday. A huge celebration is planned at Grammy's beach house. Sassy can't wait!

But the weather reports say a hurricane is swirling in the Atlantic, and could be coming right toward Grammy's town.

So much for family fun-everyone's too busy boarding up their houses and stocking up on food. To make matters worse, the local sea turtles' lives are threatened, there's no electricity, stores are closed, and there's no birthday cake.

This is not your typical Sharon Draper book. Instead of her deeply emotional stories or those that are set in very urban areas, the Sassy books are a light-hearted romp with a very engaging African-American girl doing regular life things and having a ball doing them. Good examples of having fun, making friends and being a friend abound. Target audience: grades 3-5 but would also be appropriate for strong 1st and 2nd grade readers. Solid choice for fans of Junie B. Jones, Heidi Hecklebeck and Ivy and Bean books and highly recommended for libraries serving that audience needing more ethnic diversity in their collections.

A Sharon Draper story for the younger set. Fourth grader, Sassy, and her family fly to Florida to celebrate Grammy's summer birthday on the beach, except a hurricane is headed that way and is threatening to displace the eggs in a sea turtle's nest. Then the storm hits and Sassy learns how to celebrate and help when obstacles bear down.

Although there aren't specifics as to the culture of the family, it appears as though they're an educated African-American where the father is a science teacher and the grandparents are college graduates.

Honestly my favorite book of all time. Her "Sassy Sack" inspired me to be prepared. This is everything you could want in a short read and more.

I bought this book at the Scholastic book fair because it was by Sharon Draper. I felt I needed to read to read it before adding it to the elementary collection.

Sassy is often called Little Sister. She has a big brother and big sister. In this book the family leaves Ohio to visit Grammy and Poppy at their Florida home. Poppy teaches at the University. Grammy is a storyteller.(+) They are excited to celebrate Gram's birthday with a beach party celebration. Only, there is a storm looming...Dad, a science teacher, explains the categories of a hurricane.

Sassy is in fourth grade. Some of her actions and ideas seem to belong to a younger girl. She, as any primary character, has a lot of bright ideas.

This book included fun facts about hurricanes and sea turtles. This would be a good book to accompany either of those topics.

This book is called Sassy: The Birthday Storm by Sharon M. Draper. This is a fiction book. The characters are Sassy, Sadora, Grammy, Daddy and the little brother. Sassy has her own way of doing things and she likes pink, purple. The problem in this book is when they had a hurricane. I made a connection. I like when Sassy says she like pink and purple and my favorite colors are those. I didn’t like when they had a hurricane because Sassy had a party to go to. If you don’t like books with hurricanes, you won’t like this book.

Sassy the birthday storm is a great book. Sassy is. A sassy girl she has a sister and a brother that annoy her. For her grandmother they went to maimy their was a storm was going on so instead they ate ice cream because their lights went out. Sassy before the birthday storm she walk around the beach and found baby turtle she end it up saving them so it's like sassy had a advencher with her family and the birthday went better than what they wanted.just keep reading this book because this book is amazing!

Sassy and her family travel to Florida to celebrate her grandmother's important birthday but a hurricane has other plans and the big celebration is cancelled. The impending storm threatens a sea turtle nest and the family helps save the eggs. Draper's characters are well developed, even if Sassy appears a bit young for her age. The peppering in of hurricane and sea turtle information makes this a good read-aloud companion for like themed science units.
