Say Hello to the Animals is a lovely interactive book for toddlers, by Ian Whybrow. Published by Macmillan Children’s Books in 2005, it is similar to “Playful Puppy: A Touch and Feel Adventure” published by Sterling in the same year, and which I have reviewed link here.

Each book is a “Touch and Feel” book, with textured panels on each page for the child to stroke. Say Hello to the Animals has a few more of these, a bolder font size and fewer words.

The book starts at the crack of dawn, with a cockerel’s cry of “Cock-a-doodle-doo …

Ready, steady off we go.
Round the farm to say hello.”

And just as in “Playful Puppy”, a friendly and boisterous puppy scampers off to explore the farmyard, and say hello to all the animals there. He meets in turn, a sheep, a pig, a hen, then:

“Look who’s hiding under those sticks.
Say hello to the fluffy chicks.”

followed by a cow, a duck, and a horse.

The beauty of this book is that all the onomatopoeic sounds made by the animals are incorporated. The page featuring the puppy has a rhyming couplet, and the facing page shows the name of the animal, followed by the sound it makes, “Oink, oink, oink” or “Cheep cheep cheep” and so on, in very bold print. Toddlers will find joining in and making the noises the animals make irresistible, and will usually want to stroke their fuzzy coats too. The final double page spread shows all the animals, plus their names and the sounds they each make, pictured facing the reader in turn, as a sort of recap.

This is an excellent book from every point of view. It is fun for tiny children, as well as teaching them the appearance and names of farmyard animals, their likely locations, and the sounds they make. It has upbeat gently humorous illustrations, which are colourful and attractive, and instantly recognisable even though they are simplified. Not only is it fun for the toddler, but also for the adult sharing the book, as it moves on very quickly.

Ian Whybrow has written several other book in this series, including “Say Hello to the Baby Animals!”, “Say Hello to the Jungle Animals!”, “Say Hello to the Dinosaurs!”, and “Say Hello to the Snowy Animals!”. There are also “Say Boo to the Animals”, “Say Goodnight to the Sleepy Animals!”,“Bedtime Bear” and “Noisy Way to Bed”, which all speak for themselves. He also writes books such as “Harry and the Dinosaur”, for slightly older children.

Ian Whybrow works with various illustrators, but for Say Hello to the Animals he has collaborated with Tim Warnes, a very popular illustrator in the UK who illustrates the “Little Tiger” series of books.

Although these two books from different publishers have a virtually identical story line, similar treatment, and cover the same ground, it is hard to know which to recommend. The “Playful Puppy” illustrations are more naturalistic and carefully drawn, whereas Say Hello to the Animals has simpler illustrations which are very cute. Both books are lovely.

I’d get both if I were you!

Say Hello to the Animals! by Ian Whybrow is a children’s picture book. This book is intended for toddlers- ages 2-3. “Ready, steady, off we go! Round the farm to say hello” as we follow a furry gray and white pup scampering around the farm to say hello to all the animals. I rated this book with 5 stars, as allows young readers to use three of their five senses: sight, sound, and touch. The bold, bright illustrations really bring this book to life. Children will love saying hello to all of the farm animals and making their noises. And probably the most special part about this book is that it has touch-and-feel animals on each page. The texture of each animal feels like velvet and would be very appealing to young readers. This would be an awesome book to teach young readers their farm animals and animal sounds.

"Say Hello to the Animals" is a beautiful picture book allowing your little one to meet the different animals on a farm through a wonderful little adventure following Dog. Two little rhyming lines introduce each animal before reading the sounds which said animal makes allowing kids to not only guess who to expect, but also try to impersonate them. With each page and each new animal is a beautiful illustration of Dog saying hello to the animal; although simplistic drawings, they are fun for babies to look at - enough variation in colours and shapes for all children to take in.

Definitely one of the nicer finds for bedtime stories!

Puppy runs around the farm saying hello to the various animals in this wonderfully colorful board book. Like the other books in the "Say Hello" series, all the animals are fuzzy making it more interactive for children. It is simply written and isn't too wordy, so young infants and toddlers don't lose interest in it.
