About the author

Jean Marzollo was an American children's author and illustrator best known for the I Spy series, a best-selling and award-winning collection written entirely in rhythm and rhyme and illustrated by Walter Wick. Over her career, she wrote more than 100 books for children, parents, and educators, including Help Me Learn Numbers 0-20, The Little Plant Doctor, and Happy Birthday, Martin Luther King. Born and raised in Connecticut, she graduated from the University of Connecticut and earned a master’s degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She taught high school English and later worked in educational publishing, serving for 20 years as editor of Scholastic’s Let’s Find Out Magazine. Later in life, she began illustrating her own books.

I like how this book is written from the perspective of a fawn.

This book is an overview of what happens during the first year of a deer's life and the things going on in nature during spring time. The pictures are very lively and colorful and help keep the reader engaged in the story and information being shared. It walks through the season rather accurately. I think this book would be good to use when learning about seasons, and learning about animals. There are many different activities I can think of that would be good to reinforce this book and the facts about the season.

"Once Upon a Springtime" by Jean Marzollo is a great book that talks about the first year in a deer's life and during the different seasons. I loved the illustrations in this book and I think the kids will love it. This book is very easy to read and I love the information it gives. I definitely recommend reading this book to your students and it will show them a deer's life and what they go through.

A nice tale about the first year in a deer's life. It offers a glimpse into his life with his mom during the different seasons of the year, showing the warm days and ample quantities of food and then contrasting it with how harsh the winter can be for them. It's a nice story, and educational too. Nice pictures as well.

I love once upon a springtime. It was interesting to read about human seasons from a baby deer's perspective. I was afraid that something was going to happen to the mother, but it ended happy! Also, the illustrations in this book wee beautiful. Overall, a cute, easy read.

A good book to read with your child or to let your 5-7 year old read alone. The book is about the first year of a deer's life. Nice pictures.
