Seven Hitler-youth, who’ve been stuck into Wehrmacht uniforms, are deployed to defend a bridge of no strategic significance, equipped with nothing more than a few carbines and bazookas. This anti-war novel is based on a true event in Germany during the last days of the Second World War. Seven teenage soldiers are assigned to defend a bridge near their city. Unknown to them, the bridge is not strategically important. As they did not get the order to retreat, the boys keep on fighting to defend the bridge to the bitter end. No other book I have read illustrates better the folly of war, the pointlessness of it all, than this novel by Manfred Gregor.
