Here for the first time is a full collection of the photographs by Vernon Richards showing George Orwell both at home and in unexpectedly informal settings, and which give an unusually intimate view of an extremely private man. These photogrpahs are accompanied by a series of essays on George Orwell from the anarchist perspective, by Vernon Richards, Colin Ward and Nicolas Walter.
The photographs are a revelation and I kept returning to look at them after finishing the book. His clothes, his haircut, his height and the street scenes were particularly interesting. If only we had the tapes of Orwell's radio broadcasts and some more more photographs or even film. I really would love to hear his 'lower-upper-middle class accent'.
