I was surprised at the depth of characters in this Love Inspired romance. Usually shorter books don't have time to develop the characters very much. Elizabeth White, however, wrote an excellent tale of a young woman in 1879 who wants to be a doctor in a day when women weren't allowed to enter med school. Besides that main plotline, there was a lot of other action going on. I love history and Ms. White gave me plenty to learn. Very engaging and a real page-turner.

I sometimes fall prey to a stereotype of Harlequin books as being fluffy or light or maybe cheesy.

Shame on me. This book dealt with serious issues--the opium trade from China and life in the South after the Civil War. There is also the thread of a female trying to become a doctor as times were a'changing.

I enjoyed this book a great deal.

Wow, this book is really great. I loved every minute of reading it. It is a page turner ,always leaves you anticipating what will happen next.

Set in New Orleans during the late 1800's, this is a very interesting story that involves many things: international trade with China, societal expectations for men and women, medical schools during that time period,drug smuggling, kidnapping, faith in God, and romance. The two main characters, Abigail and John, were wonderful to read about. John changes so much during the course of the story, and there is intrigue and suspense near the end. Definitely a worthwhile read!
