Maxey Burnell is a reporter for a small newspaper. She is nearly side-swiped by a runaway van one night. She finds out from her police friend that there have been a rash of runaway vehicles lately. Soon afterwards, her landlady is killed by another runaway vehicle. Her grandson is devastated as he was at the scene but couldn't get to her in time. At the same time, Maxey is doing a story about an old house that neighbors want to get declared a historic landmark so that developers can't tear it down so they can build condos. As Maxey becomes friends with the leader, the woman goes missing one night and her brother is acting suspiciously. Soon Maxey's life is in danger as she chases two dangerous cases. I liked the main character and plan to read the next in the series.
