Protecting Your Health and Happiness While Caring for a Loved One with Memory Loss
Designed for those giving care to individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other memory loss disorders, this informative and inspiring guide explores how to take care of oneself in order to meet the challenges of giving care to another. Heartfelt, candid accounts by television host Leeza Gibbons and the members of her family—who cared for Leeza’s mother, Jean, for more than a decade after her Alzheimer’s diagnosis—are combined with current medical, nutritional, psychological and spiritual information and advice for caregivers. A comprehensive resources section and photo scrapbook of Leeza and her family are also included. <
This was a good book. I did't give it 5 stars, which probably says more about me than the book. It reinforced some things that I already think. Leeza had a better support system than I do. She was taking care of her elderly parents, which I have done also. I am currently taking care of my husband and my son with some developmental disabilities. But it was helpful.
Some of the material was basic, but that could just be because of my health care background. There were several chapters that made it all worth the read. Good resources also listed.
I'm late in posting this one. Perhaps because it is one that hit so close to home and my emotions were still a bit raw; so much so that I could hardly pick up this book at look at it. But now it's time. You see, some time ago I lost my father to the illness of Alzheimer's. Even now I sit and stare at the words I have written here and wonder where do I go next.
Thankfully, I don't have to try to tell you my story about my Dad because Leeza Gibbons and Physicians James Huysman, PsyD, LCSW and Rosemary DeAngelis Laird M.D have done it all in Take Your Oxygen First-Protecting Your Health and Happiness While Caring for a Loved One with Memory Loss.
Leeza and her physician friends wrote this book while caring for her mother with Alzheimer's Gloria Jean Dyson Gibbons. Caring for someone with memory loss can be heart wrenching and a blessing at the same time. It can bring families together or tear them apart. But the choice is yours as to how you will react. And there is help out there if you look for it. Leeza herself has established Leeza's Place centers that reach out to caregivers in memory of her mother.
If you get a chance read Take Your Oxygen First and hear Leeza's account in her own words. It's a glorious heart moving story and will give you hope and help if you find yourself caring for someone with memory loss.
What a wonderful resource for caregivers of both dementia and non-dementia patients! Highly recommended for those caregivers who are struggling with day-to-day tasks, guilt, quality of care and everything else we all worry about. Told from points of view from various family members, this book reminds us that in a family we all will view situations differently and that's all right but that it's necessary to use the talents of each family member to take care of their loved one properly. This is a good book to handy on your personal bookshelf!
This is a basic book about being the caregiver for an Alzheimer's patient. It was more about taking care of yourself than anything else. I had hoped for a bit more info on what to do with the initial diagnosis, but there was an extensive list of resources at the end of the book. The book had a good message and helped me get started with a list of questions to work on.
This book is co-authored by a geriatrician (Rosemary DeAngelis Laird, MD) who is on my agency's Board of Directors. If you or someone you know is a caregiver, you may wish to take a look at this insightful book. Proceeds benefit www.leezasplace.org
