One of the few travel books I found specifically related to Brazil at the B&N bookstore. The other selections were thick all-inclusive books covering all of South America. Probably quite informative, but not very useful for travel. I was afraid this book was going to be a bit of a joke with its Top-10 moniker, but at its price and size and with the fold-out map in the back I decided it would pay for itself if I was able to get anything useful out of it. I was pretty surprised at the information overall. Very concise. There are areas that repeat themselves, but overall the book is broken up into useful subject topics with several informational tips. (Don't walk anywhere after dark seems to be a common note).
I found the 'Streetsmart' section alone well worth the price of the book. This section quickly covers the basic questions a 1st time traveler would have: When to go? What to bring? How to get around? How to exchange money and what to expect from vendors? What level of language barrier should be expected? Also, hotel, eating, and recreation options.
The phrase book in the back is relatively comprehensive and has a very useful pronunciation guide with each word, as the Portuguese words often look similar to Spanish, but often have quite different pronunciations.
