Bartholomew #3

Third Degree Yearn

Rate this book
When I was just a girl, I gave my heart to the housekeeper’s son. He took it with him when he left and I never got it back.

I’ve loved Julian Moore for as long as I can remember. But my plans for a future were stolen before we ever got the chance.

Playmates at four. Constant companions at nine. And the undisputed love of my young life by sixteen. We were best friends through it all. But when Julian got sent away, my stubborn heart never got the message. Over time and distance, I wrote hundreds of letters and spilled all my deepest secrets. But the boy I’d once loved left me far behind. My letters went unanswered, and I never got over the pain.

Seven years later, Julian is back with a few secrets of his own.

When a surprise encounter forces my former friend back into my life, I realize just how much has changed since we’ve been apart. And how my feelings haven’t. We’re not sixteen anymore, and for the first time, Julian sees me as something more than a friend. Yet he can't envision a future for a proper lady and the housekeeper’s son.

There’s a fine line between the past and the present. These old wounds are hard to ignore, and I find myself desperate to avoid being left behind again. Julian may not see himself the way I do, but I must decide if the boy I yearned for all those years ago can be the man I’ll love forever.

Will our future be the love story we write ourselves or will destiny stand in our way again?

Book #3 in the Bartholomew series follows the steamy second-chance romance between two former best friends. Third Degree Yearn is a full-length historical romance filled with charm and wit, swoony correspondence, and a guaranteed happily ever after.

THIS BARTHOLOMEW FAMILY IS ONE OF MY ABSOLUTELY FAVOURITES!
I DEVOURED the first two books - so it wasn't a huge surprise that I loved the third book as well!

Third Degree Yearn by Laney Hatcher is the third book - as I said before - and the wonderful love story of Genevieve and Julian.

Genevieve is the youngest sibling of the Bartholomew family and has a strong personality. Growing up with Julian Moore was wonderful. For both of them... until life changed... their friendship changed and suddenly everything is different...

OMG! This book! Laney Hatcher just knows how to make me fall in love with special characters! I can't say often enough how much I enjoy the first person writing style! Usually it's third person for historical romance - but yes, for this series it totally works with the first person! 😉😉

I loooove this family and of course it was wonderful to experience the beautiful love story of Genevieve and Julian!
OMG! What a great second chance for true love! I don't wanna spoil you too much!
Just read this book and fall in love like I did! 💕
Everything they've to deal with! Awwwwww!!! There's sooo much chemistry!!!
And absolutely catchy storyline! I enjoyed every moment of their journey!
From drama to family dinners to secret meetings... awwwww!!!
OH MY GOODNESS!!!!
PERFECTION!!!
I LOVED THIRD DEGREE YEARN SO MUCH!
EVERYTHING WAS SO GOOD AND IT DISTRACTED ME FROM REALITY.
THANK YOU, LANEY HATCHER!

OMG! And this epilogue?! I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK!!! 🤩🤩🤩

Thank you so much to Laney Hatcher for this early copy. This is my honest review in my own words.

“Third Degree Yearn” won my heart! Historical romance, second chance romance, childhood friends to lovers, slow burn, love letters, smut, and british drama, are some of the tropes that stand out in this book.

I want to congratulate the author who managed to perfectly capture how it feels to have a broken heart and continued to long for that "impossible love" to become a reality in some way or another. Julian’s personal growth contrasting to Genevieve's love and passion are things that will make you connect with this book immediately.

Genevieve, who fought for her dream, her career, and her great love, has been one of the best female characters I have read all year!

Additionally, Laney Hatcher's narrative that transported me to London, 1800s made me invest deeper into this book.

I love the Bartholomew brothers, each with different personalities but just as amazing. Laney created a family that welcomes you and makes you feel at home in this book. I honestly cannot wait to read future works by this author. I highly recommend this book that will make you blush and love!

I received an ARC from the author today. This is the third book in this series.
I loved Genevieve and Julian and how they overcame so many obstacles to reach their HEA. I have come to adore all of these characters and I CAN NOT wait for Silas' book next. This Bartholomew family is the best.

Although this is a standalone, if you read the first two books in the series you were introduced to Julian and Genevieve when they were teenagers.
This books seven years after their separation when Julian is sent off to work at his uncles farm by his mother, who happens to be the housekeeper of the Bartholomews).
Their story is a sweet one. Poor Julian is conflicted with so many things and can’t imagine what a future with Genevieve would look like.
I couldn’t put this book down from the minute I got it I have to finish it to see the twist and turns it took me on.
Laney is a fabulous and each of her books is better than the last.
And I can’t wait for Silas’ book next. Gotta love that little hook at the end!!!

Third Degree Yearn is the third book in the Bartholomew Series. This time around is the youngest Bartholomew, Genevieve (Gen). We did get a glimpse of the two MCs at the end of Second Chance Dance, but this can be read as a stand-alone.

Gen’s childhood best friend (and also the housekeeper’s son), Julian (Jules) has returned from working as an apprentice at his uncle’s horse farm, Brightleaf Farms, since he was 16. He’s back to acquire buyers for horses after being gone 7 years.

There’s been some misunderstanding, but thankfully it’s cleared up pretty quickly and then we get to see the hero make up for it. Super swoony.

They’re both trying to find their own way and to ask for help when they need it. Jules would really love to take over Brightleaf, so his uncle can retire. Gen’s been writing a serial for the newspaper, under a pseudonym and wants to reveal herself.

I’m really starting to dig epistolary romances. For this one, it’s a way to look into the past, without having to go back and forth.

There’s a big sense of family with this series, whether biological or found, which I really love.

Overall, I really love this series. It’s funny, it’s sweet, it’s also steamy (don’t let the cute covers fool you). There are meddling siblings, meddling animals, and even some coach shenanigans. This one is not one to miss!

Silas, their older brother, and Mary, Patty’s bestie, will be the last book in the series, Last on the List, out December 12, 2023.

Thank you to Laney. I voluntarily reviewed an early copy of this book.

I am not, generally, a historical romance lover but Laney Hatcher is one of the few exceptions to the rule. I feel like I’ve waited forever for Third Degree Yearn, and it’s everything I’d hoped for. Sexy and funny, with witty dialogue, this friends-to-strangers-to-lovers story was exactly the story I needed for Gen and Jules.

“You are wholly formed from my memories and my dreams. I love every version of you—and every version of us.”

Oh my goodness, Laney Hatcher’s style of Regency romance is simply my favorite! Third Degree Yearn had just about all of my catnip love story components. Epistolary love stories make my heart so happy, enemies-to-lovers is my jam, add first loves and mutual pining and you have literary perfection in my opinion! Genevieve and Julian were born into different stations, but the Bartholomews always held Julian in their hearts as deeply as family. When Julian is sent to live with his uncle to make something of himself, young unspoken love is torn apart. Letter after letter goes unanswered until love and friendship sour to heartbreak and animosity. If you were a fan of Anne Shirley & Gilbert Blithe, you’ll love Gen and Julian! They have a similar yearning, witty banter, and heart-melting romance. Gen is imaginative, enchanting, and tender-hearted with a fiery spirit. Julian is stubborn, broody, kind, and oh-so-swoony! Laney Hatcher does not hold back on the spice, or the Regency era sweetness. I loved every moment of this love story, even when Julian had a hard time letting go of false impressions. I adored the Bartholomew Family before, but Third Degree Yearn embedded them into my heart. Percy and the story within this story were delightful. If you enjoy lighthearted historical romance with big family fun, witty antics, beguiling characters, and soul-stirring romance, you’ll love Laney Hatcher’s Third Degree Yearn!

Is swoony a word? I don’t think so, but I’m going to use it to describe this book anyway! I’ve been waiting for Julian and Genevieve’s story for what feels like forever, and it was with the wait.

Listen, I was not the biggest fan of Julian, even after we find out what happened while he was away, but he is just a complicated, damaged man and he redeemed himself to me at some point. Gen and Julian are just so sweet and cute together, and I love how Gen isn’t afraid to speaks her mind, and knows exactly what she wants, which is Julian in every way she can have him.

I’m obsessed with the entire Bartholomew family, (if you love the Bridgerton family, you will love this one too) with not only their shenanigans but also how they support one another, and I felt like this book showed that even more than the others. With a persistent cat and a lot of love letters, Third Degree Yearn is childhood friends to enemies to lovers at its very best!

My full review to come at LitBuzz.

Third Degree Yearn is simply wonderful. Genevieve and Julian are childhood friends torn apart and a decade later thrust back together. All those feelings didn’t just disappear, and they are truly delicious on page.

Complete with a meddling siblings, a purrfectly wonderful orange cat, no skimping on late night bedroom activities, and the swooniest letter writing— this is top tier romance.

Laney Hatcher, I adore you. Is it December yet?

Gen and Jules are officially my favourite Bartholomews couple!! I loved their second chance romance, the epistolary part, the parallels, the wooing, everything! Loved seeing Franny grown up and thriving into her family and forming a bond with Jules and that little scoundrel that is Percy. And now I can't wait for Silas and Mary!!

At sixteen, Genevieve suffered after having her first love, Julian, sent away. She spends years writing to him only to receive nothing in return. After nearly a decade, Genevive and Julian are reunited but his perceived betrayal has left her heart hardened toward him. While Julian attempts to repair their friendship, he reveals that he had also been sending letters that had gone unanswered.

Third Degree Yearn is the third book in the Bartholomew series. I would highly suggest reading the other two books in the series first for context and character development. This open-door historical romance is overflowing with sweet and swoony moments. The banter between the MCs is exceptional.

Epistolary romance novels are my favorite and this one is delightful. The letters between the MCs are blended seamlessly throughout the chapters and help establish the MCs relationship without info dumping. Genevieve reminds me so much of Emery. Their unique hobbies set them apart from the rest of their siblings and seem to give them an even greater bond in the end. I like that readers get to see not only the development of the romantic relationship between the MCs, but the strengthening of the familial relationships. I love that the MCs have defined goals and aspirations and that they both have something they can work toward together without either one having to give up their plans.

Laney Hatcher has already established her place as a top tier historical romance author. Her style and attention to detail along with her sense of humor are evident throughout her writing. She never disappoints and I can't wait for the next release in the series, Last on the List.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

"I love every version of you—and every version of us... But my favorite is who we are together."

I absolutely adore the Bartholomew series and have been eagerly anticipating Genevieve and Julian's story. Let me tell you, Third Degree Yarn does not disappoint. [insert dreamy sigh here] The lost years of friendship and subsequent reconnection, the yearning and angsty buildup from friendship to lovers, secrets and betrayal, and a fierce and unwaveringly supportive family no matter how you've come to be a part of it.

Genevieve and Julian's story is everything I love about the series combined: charming, witty, swoony and delightfully steamy. You cannot help but fall in love with this series and the characters within.

If you told me a year ago that some of my most anticipated reads on my TBR would be Historical Romance, I'd have told you "No way." But Laney Hatcher has me absolutely smitten with her fresh and vibrant version of historical romance and I eagerly look forward to each new release. I am beyond excited for Silas and Mary's story, Last on the List, especially after that teaser! Their story is coming December 12, 2023.

Series- Bartholomew #3

Troupes-Childhood friends to lovers, enemies to lovers,

Laney Hatcher needs to cut it out! She has yet to write a book I haven’t absolutely adored and its just not fair to all the other hist-rom books out there!

But for real I have been waiting for this book about Gen and Jules since the beginning and Laney, Gen and Jules did not disappoint!

Genevieve hast seen or heard from her childhood best friend since he left at 16. Now he’s all grown up and hot AF but also she is pissed at him. Julian also has some not so great feelings about Gen. Its takes a few heated conversations but once this massive wedge between them has been figured out its only their will power and social circumstance that can keep them apart.

Gen and Jules have a lot of pent up feelings and those feels lead to some particularly steamy spicy times, I can safely say that is story had the most spice of all of Laney’s published works and I am 100% here for it! I also love the way her family reacted like it was nothing when she later admits to the intimate relationship. The Bartholomews are the family you want at your back in this version of the 1860’s!

If childhood friends turned contentions strangers who want to find their way to one other again, is your jam, then this book is for you. Laney’s writing style continues to put my brain in it’s happy place while pulling on all of my heart strings.

Thank you Laney for both Paperback copies and the EARC, all opinions are my own!

Review:

I love all the books in this series, but it seems that with each new book gets even better than the last.

Genevieve is the youngest daughter in the Bartholomew family and since book one we noticed her feelings for Julian. They grew up together and, although Gen’s family having always treated Jules as part of the family, he never felt like it and his mother contributed a lot to it. Add it to the elitist and unfair English society they lived, Julian always felt like he would never belong, and a relationship with Gen would be impossible.

After years of separation and lack of communication, they have a second chance at love, but his insecurities will play a important part in the story and be a deterrent to their HEA.

I love all the characters in this series and the MCs in this book were a great addition to it. It’s impossible not to fall in love with their story and to cheer for them to be together.

Third Degree Yearn is book 3 in the Bartholomew series, and it took all of two seconds for me to fall in love with this family. Genevieve is the youngest Bartholomew sibling and grew up as best friend and co-conspirator to Julian Moore, the son of her family’s housekeeper. At 16, Julian leaves to go work on his uncle’s farm, but despite the hundreds of letters Gen writes to her friend, she never gets a response.

Seven years later, the last thing she expected was for Julian to reappear in her life.

There are so many conflicting emotions warring inside both Gen and Julian upon their reacquaintance, and it’s a continued battle to come to some sort of understanding. The resurgence of old feelings and pining for a lost love don’t make it any easier. I simply adored these two characters so much as they worked to find what makes them happy amidst all of the societal expectations.

This was my first book by Laney Hatcher, but it will absolutely not be my last! I can’t wait to read the first two installments of this series, and I certainly am looking forward to Silas’s story!

I have been waiting for Julian and Genevieve’s reunion since the last book! Do yourself a favor and do not read this as a standalone, the pining in book #2 totally sets the mood for this romance and should not be missed.

Julian and Genevieve are the epitome of friends to lovers. They grow up as best friends, but as they grow, so do their feelings. And then Julian has to go find his own way in the world and they are relegated to writing to stay in touch. That doesn’t go as planned, but I loved the letters and seeing how Genevieve continued to rely on her communication with Julian to work out her feelings.

The second chance portion of their reunion might take a little while, but the groveling was first rate. And Hatcher does not let us down with the steam of their relationship. And I loved how everyone already knew!

I did want to shake Julian for his lack of communication, but he does get his act together! And don’t even get me started on his mother, ugh. She’s the worst.

All in all, a terrific historical romance that lived up to the hype (created in my own mind) for their reunion!!

With Third Degree Yearn Laney Hatcher has cemented herself as an author whose books I will always pick up and read. She creates interesting and likeable characters and her storytelling and writing just keep getting better and better with each book.

Genevieve and Julian were friends as children and teenagers, but when he is sent away her letters go unanswered. She loved him then and her feelings are just as strong - if not more so - now. It was interesting seeing how their relationship developed as they worked through their past while getting to know each other as they are now.

Laney did an excellent job bringing the sweet and swoony moments, the steam, the emotion, and the yearning that the title promises. I was hooked from the moment I started reading and I couldn't put it down. I cannot recommend this book and series enough!

Thank you to the author for providing an ARC for an honest review.

I’m pretty sure I said this with the last book, but the Bartholomew siblings continue to completely capture my heart. The way they live with their whole heart and soul is just perfection.

Third Degree Yearn can define read as a standalone, but you’d be missing out. *wink* the main characters from the first two book are woven into third degree yearn, so there might be some spoilers if you read them out of order.

Julian and Genevieve, their story traverses a whole gamut of my favorite tropes. Childhood friends, first love, enemies to friends to lovers, with dash a epistolary elements, and a slightly mythical cat named Percy.

And the grovel, the GROVEL! *chefs kiss* and that ending! Laney Hatcher has me on the edge of my seat for Silas’ book. Cannot wait!

Another amazing book from Laney. Oh how I adore this series and how she got me hooked on historical romance!

Third Degree yearn is a wonderful, funny and a delightful read. It’s filled with so many amazing tropes - second chance, childhood crush, and slow burn.

Julian and Genevieve are destined to be together despite people trying to keep them apart. There is so much love and pain between these two. It takes them a bit to get through the past hurt but once they do…holy wowzer, the passion and love they have for one another is amazing!!

The love letters may be my favorite part of the story.

Highly recommend this book and series. This is a stand alone but I recommend reading the first two books to understand the history/other characters/

Looking for a historical romance with swoon, heat, and modern-day attitudes? Look no further than Third Degree Yearn.

Julian and Genevieve had been childhood friends for years, regardless of Julian being the housekeeper's son. After Julian is sent to his Uncle's, years go by with no communication. When Julian and Gen finally see each other, they find that the yearning they felt when they were younger has only been magnified.

This was a sweet read. I loved reading the letters and seeing both Julian and Gen realize that they wanted more. Plus, the animal companions were top-notch!

Plus, the back cover of the book features the garden where Julian and Gen meet again, with disastrous results.

Book three in the Bartholomew series. Can be read and enjoyed as stand-alone, but series is so good I recommend starting at the beginning. Each book is about a different Bartholomew sibling with secondary characters the same throughout the series. Full length told in dual POV with HEA. Julian and Genevieve grew up together but are from different classes. I love that Genevieve and her family never treated Julian as anything other than part of the family. Julian had to fight his own battle of being worthy of Genevieve's love. I love the sweet and steam in this series!!

Of all the new authors I’ve read in the past year, Laney Hatcher is my hands down favorite. I love the Bartholomew series so dang much, I didn’t think anything could top Patty’s book for me. Enter: Gen and Julian. Second chance, friends to lovers AND LETTERS!!?? YES PLEASE!!!! These two gave me heart palpitations through the entire second half of this book in the absolute best way. I was very excited to read this book, but unfortunately it missed the mark for me. I did enjoy reading it because I really love the (slightly overbearing) Bartholomew family, however the MMC was infuriating and had very little redeeming qualities. I love slow burn romances, but aside from the spice they really didn’t have a relationship until the last chapter. He spent the entire book pushing Genevieve away, lying to her, and dismissing her feelings and the grovel (if you could call it that) was very underwhelming and I didn’t feel like we really had time to see them as an established, happy couple. Genevieve finally got the happy ending she always wanted, but spent the entire book miserable getting there. I am sure they show up in the next book, but I am undecided if I will be reading it as the main characters are my least favorite side characters from the series.

This is a historical, second chance, childhood friends to lovers romance set in England in the 1800s. Genevieve and Julian have known each other since childhood (Julian is the son of the Bartholomew’s housekeeper) and Genevieve always thought they would grow up and get married much like her sister Emery and her husband/best friend from childhood Augustus (their book is the first in the series, First to Fall). However, Julian is sent away at sixteen to work for his uncle and contact was lost. Seven years later their paths cross again, and we see them battle with past feelings and the pressures of society in London.

I am both thoroughly furious and extremely in love with this book.
I have not read the other books in the series, but a story of friends to lovers and a second chance romance was the hook to get me to read this one. Gen is so sweet, kind and loving and my heart went out to her after all the years she yearned for Julian, thinking he didn't care about her. The mishandling of letters that caused the rift between them was frustrating to say the least, but they were able to make peace with it. I cannot fault Gen for her constantly forgiving Julian's actions, she was and is hopelessly in love with him, but I also wanted to shake some sense into her, he can be so frustrating! Julian, for his part, has always though he was lesser and never good enough for Gen, as a friend or even later as anything more because of his status. I really like Julian, but I just wanted to strangle him! I understand how we was made to feel growing up by his mother, but what I cannot understand is that for even a second that he could believe that Gen would not want to be with him wherever he may go. Thankfully, he does get some sense and they have a HEA.
The Bartholomew progeny and their spouses were all so delightful to read about. So full of life and love for one another, including Julian who didn't realize how much they always treated him like family. I think Miles in particular was the MVP, helping Julian any way he could and in turn, helping him achieve the means to be able to be with Gen. Fantastic story and characters. 10/10
