Finally found it! I read this as a child and loved it. Lost the copy in a move, couldn't remember the author, but it was so pivotal in my early reading years!!

This book was actually very good. Mystery quite liked Ellen. However this book was a bit slow in the begnning, it gradually reached its high point, to which she couldn't stop.
