Full Disclosure - I got this as a free e-book from Greyhart Press in return for a posted review. This is the second Greyhart download that I have reviewed.
This is a well done horror story that mashes up ghosts, demons, torture and Satan himself. It can be a little scattered and the copy that I got had some typos but I was so engaged with the main characters that I could barely put it down once I started reading.
I recommend this to horror/splatter fans but beware - there is some really graphic violence in this one. That being said, it was a really good read and pretty well done once you get used to some of the quirks that an American reader has to process from a story set in England.
What keeps In The Rain With The Dead from being a 5 star book are the plot inconsistancies. To name them would mean I would have to spell out some spoilers (I won't do that) but there are some aspects of the story that never really get resolved or don't quite fall into place for me.
Read it, it will get your pulse racing!

I like horror books and films. When I read the blurb for this book, it sounded pretty interesting. Even though I'm sick to death of vampire romances, this book - although it had a vampiric character in it - was a far cry from that.
There were some very graphic scenes of violence and sexual depravity that really aren't for the faint-hearted. They did a very good job of creating a strong dislike for Magellan. As villains went, he wasn't that interesting - there was nothing redeeming about him. He was scary and clearly evil and even in his flashbacks, there was nothing balanced about the character - none of the good moments that make bad characters that much more interesting.
Nadia and Jim were fairly interesting characters. The scenes with Theresa appearing at first were fairly interesting, but she became less creepy when she started talking more with Jim.
I did think that there were too many scene changes. It seemed that, within the space of a couple of paragraphs, it was being changed - and often unnecessarily, like switching to another POV. I also found the action rather slow-moving. Magellan didn't come into the story properly for quite a while and then it seemed a little rushed. Also, Jim and Nadia were clearly very unequipped for trying to face off against a demon.
The ending wasn't perfect, but it was satisfactory. All in all, the book was a good read, but it was a bit too slow moving in parts for my test and I find villains more interesting if they have some humanity in them.

My first horror novel, this was written over a couple of years and followed on from my success with short stories in the small press. The book was originally published by Pendragon Press in 2005 then, in a revised edition, by Greyhart Press in 2012.
