Lucy Cousins, BA Honours in Graphic Design from The Faculty of Arts and Architecture, Brighton Polytechnic, postgraduate degree from Royal College of Art, is an author-illustrator of children's books. She is best known for her books featuring Maisy Mouse but she has also published other children's books including one about Noah's Ark. She is a mother of four and lives in Hampshire, England. Her own children are the inspiration for her books whose age range is 2-8.

I absolutely love how you can tell Lucy Cousins used gouache to paint the illustrations in her booms. Even with simplistic background designs, the scenes are so vibrant and full of life!

I loved the fact that even though this was a Christmas based Maisy book, there is a moral in looking out for and helping out your friends.

Maisy is a mouse and her friends are all coming together for Christmas. They are a crocodile, a bird, an elephant, and a squirrel. They all get to Maisy's house and decorate and eat but they are missing Eddie the elephant! So they all put their coats and mittens on to go in search of him! Where do they find him but a big snow elephant! They dig him out with Maisy's tractor and have a happy Christmas after all!

Maisy books are very simply drawn, not to overwhelming for young listeners-readers. And the text is simple and easy to follow when someone is reading it them and would be a bit tough for a beginning reader to read on their own but with practice and an adult helping I bet they could read it alone in no time. Maisy books are a joy to read.

So Maisy books are simplistic and nice for young reads. Overall good. What I didn't like about the book is that the friend who got stuck in the snow was Eddie the elephant and they needed a tractor to get him unstuck. It is pretty funny thinking about an elephant stuck in snow and needing a tractor, but what is it saying about kids who are overweight? Why was it the big "kid" that got stuck and was slow? I just think the book might contribute to stereotypes about large kids.

Ps I like the theme of the book as it snowed a lot on Christmas Eve this year!

Maisy the mouse is having a Christmas Eve party, and all her animal friends are invited for this secular celebration. Unfortunately, Eddie the Elephant gets stuck in the snow and needs to be rescued.

Maisy and friends get ready for Christmas at Maisy's house - all except for Eddie the elephant. Eventually they decide to hunt for him in the snow and need a tractor to pull him out with a pop. The illustrations are lovely, I just find the names a little tricky!

Poor Eddie, the elephant gets lost in the snow on his way to Maisy's house. My two and a half year old granddaughter and I have been reading this for the last couple of months. She pretty much tells the story to me these days and makes me respond to her questions, Is that Eddie?
