This is the sixth volume that chronicled the adventures of Space Cadets Tom, Roger, and Astro, the crew of the good ship Polaris. This time they're split apart for much of the action, which kind of detracts from the story. Nonetheless, it's a fun and fast-paced frolic, though the scientific details are played a bit too fast and loose. Thank goodness Captain Strong of the Solar Guard is around to keep things on track.
Although this is a fast-paced adventure that will appeal to middle-school readers, it is a bit weaker than some of the others in the series. The plot is extremely contrived and not very believable. Some of the action takes place offstage. And then there's the usual sexism.
The name Carey Rockwell was a pseudonym used by Grosset & Dunlap. It is unknown who wrote the books, or even if there was only one writer. It is interesting to note, however, that while much of the content was original, a number of scenes and plot points were taken from the television series of the same name.More about Carey Rockwell
