Daddy’s girl? Daddy’s dead!

EDIT: the plot thickens because this seems to have fake reviews, lol

Conspiracy theory?

Many of the 5 star reviews come from profiles that have only reviewed one book (this one). Family and friends?

Not saying that there won’t be people who truly enjoy this but… you get what I’m saying.

Love that spectacular cover; the deftly done mix of mystery, sci-fi, and fantasy; the amazing worldbuilding; plus the twisty plot that kept me rapt. Teen and YA readers will especially enjoy THE UNFORGETTABLE ALEXANDRA SHAW, and wait as excitedly, as I am, for the sequel slated for fall. Recommended!

“For a while, I was sure she’d never forgive me, het resentment a dark cloud following me everywhere.”

Alexandra Shaw is enrolled in a reformatory school after being behind the wheel during a car accident that killed her father. Weird things start to happen when a boy named Logan comes into her live, making her remember all kinds of things from what seems like a different life. Together with her Logan and her friends she tries to find out what is happening.

First of all. I liked the cover and the summary. That was what drew me to the book and is the reason why I applied to write a review. It is a Teens & YA book which is very obvious in word choice for example:
- Effing
- Highly sus
- Hoof it (‘I hoof it to the bus’)
- You’re obvs lying!
- STFU
- Who the eff knows

I usually still enjoy reading YA but this one was just… really annoying. The book might also need a trigger warming for (attempted) suicide and self-harm (possible more).

Alexandra blames herself for everything, mostly for what happened to her father. Fine, need some character development.. But that didn’t really happen. Nothing changed.

*POSSIBLE SPOILERS*

Everything seemed to go her way. All the time… almost immediately.
For example:
- Someone having a key to a locked door (multiple times)
- Memories that come flooding back. ALL of them at ones (‘that’s when our eight months together comes flooding back’) (multiple times)
- Picking a lock and it working on the first try and it not taking long
- Immediately recognizing a username of someone who knows EVERYTHING about the Institute and finding this person immediately and them explaining everything.
- Breaking in and getting everywhere without being seen for a long time. While actually shouting.
- Overpowering a security guard as a seventeen (maybe eighteen) year old.. twice.

And then FINALY some setback!
She forgot to close her laptop when running away!... But it’s never mentioned again.

In the end. I didn’t love it. Everything was too easy for the protagonist and the whole book was a lot of build up to… what? The second book? I am curious to see if it will be better.

* SPOILERS*

NOTE WHILE READING
Someone on TikTok said: quit a book if it isn’t interesting after the first 50 pages..
I would have had to quit the book. There is a lot of built up to.. what?
Chapter 17… still not a lot had happened
After 184 pages and we are back at the beginning…

EXTRA’S:
Sentences that didn’t feel right (but English is my second language so I don’t feel like I can complain all that much. So please tell me if I’m wrong)
- ‘he had saw then’ – he had SEEN them/he SAW them
- ‘I’m tempted aim my nose at …’ – tempted TO
- ‘But up closer, I can see that is masking something much deeper’ – but up CLOSE (?) I can see that IT IS.
- ‘in the change room’ – chanGING room
- A distinctive cat-lick up the corner’ – isn’t it a catFLICK? Context of eye makeup
- ‘I seem to have got her with that one’ - gotTEN
- ‘the feel of his hand in mind.’ – in minE
- Talking about anonymously posting something on WhatsApp.. Is that even possible? You will be able to see their phone number.

Wow, this was not what I was expected, and I can't wait for the sequel!

Alexandra's relationship with her mother has never been easy, and after the tragic death of her father, it continues to fall apart by the day.

In an attempt to provide a fresh start for everyone, Alexandra's mother accepts a position at a prestigious private school.

But things aren't as they seem, and the truth is far more dangerous than Alexandra ever expected.

Will she be able to save her friends and free them from their past?

When I started the book, I hadn't realized there would be a sequel, but thankfully, it'll be released this fall!

I was engaged by this debut young adult novel which is a mystery of identity with science fiction and thriller overtones. It's a little outside my usual genre, but I enjoyed its themes.

Alexandra has moved to a new high school: It's got the usual cliques and bullies, annoying teachers and endless homework, but her friendships with Queen B Kayla and thoughtful Hannah are a lifeline that she desperately needs.

Because Alexandra's school is also a rehabilitation centre for kids who have lived through trauma. And Alexandra believes she was driving when she and her father suffered a terrible accident that killed him and left her reeling with guilt.

Spanton understands the dynamics and yearning of high school friendship well, but makes it clear in the early going that not all is what it seems. This is a story where everyone has secrets, even the characters who initially seem the most transparent. I enjoyed the references to Never Let Me Go and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and the dynamic between Alexandra and her mother.

I also appreciated Spanton's willingness to see her vision all the way through to the end, and to make a bold choice in the novel's closing pages.

Thank you to fellow indie author A. Lloyd Spanton for sending me an advance reader copy (ARC) of this novel in exchange for a fair review.

It’s not often you find a book that lives up to a beautiful cover and a strong title, but Alexandra Shaw is, indeed, unforgettable.

Well written and boasting a strong voice, this book had me guessing from the beginning and clinging to a cliff at the end. I am already eagerly awaiting the sequel!

I received this as a digital ARC copy, but there is no doubt I’ll be buying a physical copy for my shelf once it’s released!

Actual Rating: 3.4

This was a book that was right up my alley. There's a clever blend of mystery, fantasy sci-fi, and themes around friendship and family dynamics. There's slight romance too, but it really wasn't what I was reading for.

The Unforgettable Alexandra Shaw follows a teenage girl, who attends a reformatory school after causing her father's death in a car accident where she was driving. She has two best friends: Kayla, who is outgoing and popular, and Hannah, a quiet bookworm. Weird things happen sometimes, but in general all is well — except Alexandra keeps getting weird visions of a boy she's never met but seems to have loved, once. And then he shows up, claiming she's died in the car accident too.

The writing style is pretty solidly YA and easy to read — Alexandra, Kayla, and Hannah all act and sound like typical teenagers, frustrating dramatics and all.

Plot-wise, the story started out super intriguing and was very difficult to put down. The book did a pretty good job of intertwining characters and story elements into the mystery. I do think it could have been done a little more subtly especially at the start; the narration felt more observant than Alexandra the character was and it made the importance of some props too obvious for my liking. As a reader it feels like we're told too early what parts are important and what isn't Still, I generally enjoyed the first half and being able to follow Alexandra as she started noticing discrepancies and weird behavior around her.

My favorite character dynamic in this book is undoubtedly between Alexandra and her mother; the scenes that stick out to me the strongest in the entire novel are the ones where this relationships hangs over the story with an unspoken but still looming presence and those leading up to its unravelling. And so, the final act of the book is a mixed bag for me. We get a lot of the family dynamic, but the plot also gets a little messy and tries to rely on other side characters that aren't nearly as interesting.

Still, there's a great set-up for book 2 and I will definitely be tuning in.

There are many things I have to say about this book. I deffinitely appreciate the idea for this story. The book tells us about a teenage girl named Alexandra who is said to caused a car accident in which her dad had died. Due to this tragic event she moves with her mother to a brand new city and started going to school in which there are kids with specific problems. Their relationship is pretty cold but they are trying really hard to get back to normal life. One day Alexandra starts to have very realistic visions that shows her a mysterious boy with tree-shaped tattoo. He feels weirdly familiar even if she thinks that they have never met. The girl decides to find him and confront the fact that these visions very closely resemble memories she does not have.

I think that the author is having a really nice writing style. The book was enjoyable to read. Unfortunately the plot is rushing way too much for my liking. I got the impression that our main character is ticking points off the plan of events that need to happen for the plot to continue and nothing is really stopping her. There is a basement at school in which there are closed cells? Her best friend gives her keys to them, The principal's office is locked? Okay, let's use student ID to open the doors. There is a boy who has very important informations about what is going on but he is not eager to talk? No problem, just tell him that you really need his help and next minute both of you are sitting in some private room when he is showing you medical documents of all students from school that he casually hacked. It's ridicilous considering the fact that this book also have some sci-fi elements in the plot. If I were to add any positives, I really enjoyed the dynamics of mother-daughter relationship but again, it was rushed as well so we don't have much space to come out properly.

Theoretically this book is the first in a series but at this point I don't know if I want to continue even if the cliffhanger was well done.

You Should Read This If:
-You're a fan of Never Let Me Go or The Similars.
-You want to see adults make some very, very questionable decisions and kids get their comeuppance.

Alexandra Shaw killed her dad. Albeit, by accident, but that doesn’t prevent the crippling guilt or strained relationship with her mom. As a result she’s been shipped off to reform school on the English coast but it’s not long before things start to get weird. A stranger shows up claiming to know her, and Alex’s world is flipped upside down. Students begin to lose their minds and Alexandra knows she needs to uncover the truth before she’s next.

The book moves at a nice clip, making it a breezy little romp to enjoy. I love the setting of a coastal, mysterious academy (airs of dark academia!) — but overall, neither the characters nor the location were very well developed. Action was plentiful but right on the nose; the author led you right up to every reveal so nothing ever felt shocking, though I think it was supposed to? (Listen, I’m in my 30s and reading YA so I reap what I sow, here.) The final act was gripping and definitely the highlight of the book.

Featuring: A vinyl record shop. Bad parenting. Boarding school bullies. Secret laboratories. Teen detective vibes. Banned books. Damn-the-man energy.

I generally enjoyed the (very quick) experience of reading it and I’m fairly confident this is the right flavor for some audiences (...probably ones closer in age to 18...). Overall, an engaging plot but some lack of suspense and depth.

First off, that cover! 😍 Genuinely stunning.

I was intrigued right from beginning. The writing, though sometimes a little stilted, was easy to read and fast-paced. I was never bored, and I was invested enough to finish.

My biggest complaint was that I was confused by some of the logistics. I don't want to give too much away here, but it was unclear how much Alexandra and other characters remembered at various points in the novel, and details seemed to conflict.

A couple of the characters were satisfyingly complex, but I didn't feel like I knew enough about others, including the love interest, to care about them. Sometimes the characters spoke in stereotypically teen ways without sounding like real teens; this wasn't consistent but would happen randomly, pulling me out of the story.

Overall, this book was fun and quick, though I don't know that I'm invested enough to read the sequel.

😍 The cover for The Unforgettable Alexandra Shaw is beautiful, and I loved the synopsis. I wasn't sure what to expect, but in the end I really enjoyed this book. The premise is exciting, and it was fun watching it all unfold. It got a bit too unbelievable near the end, but I would definitely read the next book in this series, which should be available Fall 2023.

Alexandra is a young girl, who is struggling with the guilt from killing her father. There’s a lot to unpack with The Unforgettable Alexandra Shaw, so many twists, and so many turns. I usually can guess an ending at the very beginning of a book, but I was pleasantly surprised that my intuition was wrong. The story was beautifully written (even though I had to go back and reread a few sentences because I was reading so fast I missed a few words). I simply just couldn’t put the story down. I cannot wait for the next book to come out in the fall. Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC.

This was a rough read. The kernel of the story was good but it needed a very strong editor. So much of the plot doesn’t make logical sense, and it’s obvious that certain actions were forced into the story to move the narrative along even though they don’t work. Even the basic idea of the school and the related hospital- none of it makes sense in the age of Instagram. The school “changes” the IGs for people when they need to erase memories of instances that happened but like, how? There’s a party with about 50 or so people there and not all of them go to the wacko school, so how did they miraculously delete everything and make everyone forget everything that happened? One of the main characters is an adult and just goes missing/is abducted and no one in his school/town/family notices or cares and it’s not even addressed. It would be one thing if all the students/patients were cut off from technology and their family, but they’re not, and the idea that NO one seems to notice any of the bonkers stuff happening is ridiculous. Especially because the school/hospital seems to be run by like 5 boomers with really bad villain caricatures for personalities. One of the villains wears Manolo Blahniks and whistles at her security guard henchmen. And I’m supposed to believe she is tapped in to the social life and digital footprint of high-schoolers? Just glaring, gaping plot holes throughout. I’m also not sure if the author and/or the story is British or American, because there are conflicting elements. The cover art was gorgeous, and again, the idea of the story was interesting, but this read like a first first draft.

"I have lived a whole other lifetime in this one afternoon."

Without giving too much away, I feel like this quote summarizes Alexandra's struggle as her past catches up to her present and she tries to piece her memories and her life back together. It's a struggle I quite enjoyed following.

This book is filled with twists and turns and I enjoyed every page of it. It's a read where you keep saying to yourself 'Just one more chapter. I gotta know what happens next!' I found the setting that A. Lloyd Spanton created to be ominous and full of depth. Unsettling from the very beginning. The characters are well thought out and the novel is paced expertly. Not too drawn out, but still enough detail to make the reader feel apart of that world.

I would recommend this book to anyone, but more specifically anyone that enjoys strong female characters with a young adult lean.

I can't wait to read more from this series and am very much looking forward to Book 2.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

First of all thank you Netgalley for providing me with this book in exchange for my honest review.

I admit, I wasn’t too sure about what to expect going into this but this book had me hooked from the beginning! I couldn’t resist the tension and really liked the atmosphere and the creepy, claustrophobic setting.
Alexandra Shaw was recently transferred to a high school where the students all experienced trauma in the past. However Alexandra, who is still suffering from the recent car accident that resulted in her father's death and is trying to mend her fragile relationship with her mother, starts to realise that not everything is what it seems at her new school.

While I sometimes wished for longer scenes since I felt that some scenes and interactions were too short at times, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. Some parts of the plot felt a bit rushed but overall I had a great time reading it and after this ending, I definitely can’t wait for the next book!

Thank you NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

There are rumors and secrets found in most high schools. Popular crowds, bullies, and comic book nerds are all universal. Yet behind the gates of Pine Cliff Academy, the secrets are more sinister; there are rumors of children locked up in the basement, teenagers going wild and jumping off the cliff into the wild sea below. But is any of it real?

Alexandra Shaw is new to the Academy. Luckily popular girl, Kayla, swooped in and saved Alexandra from being a social pariah. Because with Kayla, and the thoughtful Hannah by her side, maybe no one will look too closely at Alexandra, since it's common knowledge that she killed her father. If only it were that easy. Alexandra knows that it was an accident, but still carries the guilt. She tries to be the perfect daughter, so her mother won't resent her. Won't look at her in that disappointed way anymore. And for awhile things were getting better. Until Alexandra started having visions of a boy.

Alexandra's body knows this mystery boy. Knows his touch, his heart. But she doesn't remember him. Until she does. Until she starts to remember a lot of things, things that don't make any sense.

This was a very quick read! There was a lot of action, and while I guessed a good majority of what was to come, I still enjoyed seeing how the author brought it all together. I enjoyed this book but really wish that the author had dove in deeper. I felt like a lot of the characters were one dimensional, and I didn't feel the chemistry between Alexandra and the MMC. To be honest, there wasn't a lot of time spent together before they were rushing off to the next thing. I think if the pacing of this slowed down a little and more time was spent developing the relationship between these characters it would have been a five star read.

Some trigger warnings: abuse, self-harm, eating disorders, family trauma, murder, death.

It does end on a cliffhanger (LOL) so there is more to come and be explored within this world. Most of the novel takes place at the Academy itself, so I hope the author decides to expand the world a little more and we can experience so much more from this world and the characters!

After causing an unfortunate car accident that killed her father, Alexandra Shaw is sent to Pine Creek reformatory school. All she desires right now is to settle in at her new school, survive school until graduation, and work on her strained relationship with her mother. Until she meets a familiar stranger -- Logan, who causes Alexandra to realize that everything at her new school is not how it seems.

The Good:
- The cover and blurb of this book really draws in the reader, so if someone were to judge a book by its cover this would definitely peak their interest.
- The premise of the book is fantastic! The plot’s mystery and suspense reels you in and leaves you wanting more.
- The reference to Never Let Me Go is great because 1) it’s one of my favorite books, and 2) it foreshadows the big picture plot without giving away too much.
- The mother/daughter relationship perfectly illustrates the complex dynamic between a mother and daughter. Additionally, it’s the most flushed out and explored relationship, which gives the reader an insight to Alexandra’s motivation and emotions.
- About halfway through the book the pace picks up, leaving the reader on the edge of their seat wondering what is going to happen next.

The Not So Good:
- The first four chapters are very repetitive. They basically just say Alexandra killed her father, is new to the school, and gets made fun of by everyone (except her friends). Personally, I believe this could’ve been condensed into two chapters or used to explain in detail the dynamics of the school.
- The first third of the book is very slow paced and is a little boring to read, making it difficult to get through.
- The characters, including Alexandra are so flat and two dimensional. All of the characters’ relationships and personalities are superficial, making them uninteresting. I definitely think there could’ve been more time spent examining the characters and their lives, which would bring them more to life.

The Unforgettable Alexandra Shaw is an easy to read teen mystery with some science-fiction/thriller undertones. Readers followed a 17 year old girl, Alexandra, as she tried to fit into a new school after having to completely relocate after losing her father in a car accident. Alexandra doesn't know who to trust as she uncovers some secrets about her identity throughout the book whilst also having strange visions about a boy she hadn't yet met. Plot-wise, I felt that the premise of the book was extremely interesting and did keep me intrigued as to what would happen next - I was able to read this in two sittings as it was difficult to put down - however, I feel that the book could have been executed slightly differently as everything seemed a little too easy for the main characters and there didn't seem to be any true consequences for their actions. It was obvious that everything would turn out well for the main characters as nothing really seemed at stake - especially as it was mentioned that the memory-wiping procedures could fail and forgotten memories could be re-triggered. Alexandra was a very difficult character to like as, throughout the book, she didn't seem to stay true to her character and appeared to make wild decisions that didn't seem realistic. I also didn't care too much for her friends or her love interest as we, the readers, didn't actually know much about them - they were just there in Alexandra's story.
Overall this book was a quick and easy read but may have more suited towards a reader closer to the protagonists age (although I am only 23...?). While I won't be checking out the sequel, there is already a good mystery being set-up which I can see other people enjoying.

Alexandra Shaw is your typical teenager from the outside, she attends a private high school, has friends that she adores, and can sometimes struggle to get along with her mom. But Alexandra was in a car accident that killed her father, and she was the one driving... At least, that's what she was told. Until she meets Logan, who tells her that her father wasn't the only one who died in the crash, she had too. While Alexandra struggles through the grief and guilt of killing her father and the confusion that Logan adds to the equation, we follow as she attempts to find out more about her life before.

Overall, I found this book to be pretty enjoyable. It was an easy read but at times i found the writing to be kind of slow and repetitive. That being said, the story kept my attention and I really found myself speeding through the pages, wanting to find out what would happen next. This book really gave me Wilder Girls by Rory Power vibes. Though the premise isn't exactly the same, I found myself almost getting the storylines intertwined. I ultimately decided to rate this three stars because while I did enjoy it, there was just something missing for me and I can't quite put my finger on it. However, I am really looking forward to checking out the final book in this series when it comes out in the fall. The ending of this book was very intriguing and I'll definitely be thinking about it for a while to come.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ebook ARC of this book!

Where to start?…… I LOVED THIS BOOK.
This SF is very well written, we became completely addicted by all the plot-twist.
We follow Alexandra Shaw, who after a car crash killing her father, tried to have a normal life in her new school. She also tried to reconnect with her mother, whom she thinks ressent her for the accident. Sinking both of them into grief.
‘Til she « meets » Logan who claim to know her, leaving her confused an with doubts, not knowing if her sudden visions are only a trick of her mind or reel memories.
We also have really good characters, all with a different story, that we could think as typical high school character. The Queen Bee, Kayla with her more reserved friend Hannah the both of them always attached to the hip, Kyle the Bully, Scott the director’s son and of course, Kayla’s older friends who are in University. But in this, nothing is typical or normal, and everyone has reasons to be here. I only have one advise for you, Don’t trust everyone.

I’m waiting now for the second books this fall ;)

PS: this cover is absolutely SUBLIME

The Unforgettable Alexandra Shaw immediately caught my attention with its intriguing premise and gorgeous cover.

The story itself is fast-paced with an engaging plot and a writing style that's easy to dive into. The mystery surrounding the school and Alexandra’s past kept me hooked all the way to the end—I just had to know what was really going on.

That said, I do wish certain aspects had been explored a bit more, especially the characters. Slowing the story down would have given more space for the relationships to develop naturally rather than feeling a bit rushed.

I also didn’t realize this was the first book in a duology, but unfortunately, I haven’t seen any updates on the sequel yet. The book mentions a Fall 2023 release, but as of now, there’s no news on when it’ll actually be coming out.

Overall, this was an entertaining read despite a few rough edges.
If you love YA thrillers about uncovering dark secrets, it’s definitely worth a shot!
Just a heads-up—this one ends on a HUGE cliffhanger, so fingers crossed we get that sequel soon.

I received a review copy through Netgalley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Huge thank you to the author and publisher!

Alexandra Shaw's life is full of mysteries, many which she herself doesn't understand.

THE UNFORGETTABLE ALEXANDRA SHAW lives up to its main character, and the challenges she faces. The story is fast-paced, often forcing me to turn pages well beyond bedtime just to see what happens next. And the secrets that surround Alexandra are revealed piece by piece, tying together clues that lead to nefarious answers.

Alexandra's voice is gripping right from the get-go. And by the nature of the story (vague, because spoilers!), the author plays with voice throughout as the plot evolves. There were a few passages that jumped right off the page, as if I could hear Alexandra speaking through my Kindle.

THE UNFORGETTABLE ALEXANDRA SHAW is a story that examines relationships and their dysfunction, and the extreme decisions some people are willing to make so things can get 'better.'

If you liked ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, THE UNFORGETTABLE ALEXANDRA SHAW will be right up your alley!

In interest of full disclosure, I was offered an advance reader copy of this book in return for my honest review. The free nature of receiving this book in no way influenced this review.

Alexandra has a new start in life, but she still dwells on her past. The bullying in the school doesn't help with being able to move on and her relationship with her mother is strained. She meets Logan, who feeds her with information on the accident but it's up to Alexandra to remember the event herself. Dark secrets are gradually revealed until ultimately Alexandra remembers the entire truth which changes absolutely everything. The story is a slow-burn, despite the many twists and turns in the narrative. The writing is repetitive as Alexandra attempts to reclaim her normal self.

The story is not what I expected - unless I've missed something, I feel the blurb is not true. Alexandra is struggling with trauma, so bit by bit, she is losing herself. She seemingly disappears and fades in and out of reality. Logan reveals the truth behind who actually killed her father, and the risks taken where Alexandra herself could have lost her life. So she didn't actually die? She attends a school for those who have experienced trauma, which Alexandra isn't aware of until much later into the book, and her mother just wants Alexandra to get better.

Disclaimer: I got a free advanced copy of this book through booksprout. However, this remains my honest opinion of the book.

Going into this book without knowledge of the plot beforehand was one of the best, and most suspenseful, literary choices I've made. It's a captivating psychological thriller that, especially in the first half, keeps you constantly second guessing everything you read.

The narrative voice is strong—something that can be a turn off for many—but it only adds to the suspense as you see the internal narrative slowly change. The principle characters themselves are startlingly complex considering the brief amount of time we see them for.

The plot and pacing is good—especially in the first half. As it goes on, it feels like a whirlwind, but it never looses basic plot clarity.

The premise is interesting and the adventure relies on the typical amount of suspension of disbelief that you often find in YA dystopias. However, that level is fairly high. As such, I would hesitate to recommend to someone interested in more contemporary/non-fantastical YA.

Overall, it is a very strong debut and I am excited to read more of Alexandra Shaw.

I got this book to read from NetGalley; thank you.

Overall, the book was okay, it was clearly written for young adults and teens, which isn't my age group anymore, and that's okay. This is prevalent in the dramatization of the events that happened. Yes, weird things happened that definitely should not be happening to anyone and were horrible. Still, there were also a lot of minor elements that were handled with great drama. This diminished the importance of the actual problems in the book. Which was a shame. With more editing and moving elements, the book could have a more significant impact and entice you to the next installment. The once-over could help the book show us more than just telling and building a more stable story.

Editing could also be improved the grammar. Some of the sentences are grammatically correct, or words that were improperly used.

The book is fine if you want some simple teen drama with a seemingly horrible institution. But don't think about it too much; the different characters' reasoning and the institution's actual workings are not fully developed. There are some plotholes. Those may be addressed in the second book, but I'm not sure I'll find out.
