Perfect Pixie #1

Perfectly Imperfect Pixie

Rate this book
Size matters. Pixies are supposed to be petite, beautifully lithe creatures with gossamer wings. Sporting luscious, ombre pink hair and fluttering pink wings, Phil meets two out of three of those criteria. At over six feet tall, no one would dare call Phil petite. As a home-and-hearth pixie, Phil yearns to find a home and family he can bond to. When no one’s willing to hire a pixie of his stature, Phil is forced to find work elsewhere. Turns out, pixies make terrible bouncers.

The sudden death of Sedrick’s brother and sister-in-law left Sedrick Voss a pack of one—plus two young, traumatized were children. Sedrick needs help. He needs a home-and-hearth pixie. But pixies are small, delicate creatures nowhere near sturdy enough to stand up to a couple of growing werewolves. Phil seems like the perfect answer—a pixie that might be able to physically withstand small werewolf teeth and claws.

Phil is overjoyed, finally able to do a job that speaks to his heart and soul. But peace is a hard-won commodity. Sedrick is in the middle of a nasty custody battle with his niece and nephew’s maternal grandfather—one of the most arrogantly deceitful werewolf alphas to ever lead a pack. If their grandfather gets custody, Sedrick’s niece and nephew are in for a lifetime of manipulation.

Between the custody battle, noxiously invasive garden gnomes, and fairy lawyers, Phil and Sedrick struggle to keep their home and family safe. Werewolves and pixies don’t mate. Phil and Sedrick are about to challenge that misconception.

Perfectly Imperfect Pixie is a m/m standalone title with a HEA, a rough but kind werewolf, fairy lawyers, vampire bar owners, dwarf miners, questionably intelligent humans, pesky garden gnomes, and charming pixies.

I've been a veterinarian for almost twenty years and have recently added published author to my resume. I've been writing for over fifteen years, most of those stories languishing on my computer. A couple of years ago my fear of never trying to publish my stories overcame my fear of failure. The result is my first book, "Sow What You Reap". It is the first in the Reaping Covetous series. The next book, "Dead Women Tell Tales" should be out by the end of October 2021.

I love supernatural, urban fantasy, paranormal, and mystery genres. I write both M/F and M/M oriented stories.

Please don't hesitate to ask me a question or two.

Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy my stories. I know I love telling them.

This wasn’t a romance book… at all.
Phil and Sedrick’s relationship was none existent. Blink and you’ll miss it. There were instances where dicks perked and twitched at the others nearness but nothing ever really manifested. Phil and Sedrick spent page after page internally monologuing when they could’ve spent that time conversing with the other and building their relationship. The entirety of the book felt like endless missed opportunities where one MC vowed to speak with the other MC but was always waylaid due to some reason or another. I feel like their romance was put on the back burner in favor of telling a story about an elf who was insecure about his size, a wolf who was given responsibility he felt ill-equipped for and two orphaned children. The puzzle pieces may have snapped together but that doesn’t mean a whole picture was shown and then time jump and Phil and Sedrick are together with their relationship having happened completely off page. All this build up to them wanting to be with the each other and I was told and not shown. 😩 😑 😒

I don't normally read a book without sex in it, cause if they are bad, the sex can make it a little bit better.

But this? This was so pure and sweet, without being corny or too much. It was Perfectly Imperfect, a Pixie that doesn't look like a pixie and can't get a job because of it, and then a wolf who is desperate enough to don't pay attention to looks.

And so much more, how the author tackled Phil's insecurities (that were created by his surroundings, make no mistake, people were mean!) And how he came to grow. How Sedrick learned to love him, to see him, so cherish him.

I can't, I'm in love and I want a re-read. The little kids were just a lovely bonus and the story itself it's just real, surprisingly complex and cute as hell!!
Ugh!!

Can't wait to read more from this author.

I am infinitely happy that I gave this book a second go. I was so stupid that I let myself be distracted by reviews when I first started the book months ago. I had read that there were no sex scenes and was so negatively surprised that I immediately lost interest. So so so so so insanely stupid of me.
This story has just a tiny hint of romance and a tiny glimpse of sex in the epilogue. But I don't think it lacks anything.
The way the plot is knitted, both would have been really inappropriate beforehand. The only thing that could perhaps have been worked out more clearly is that Phil is attracted to Sedrick. The little hints were easy to miss. But that's all the criticism I would offer.
This story has an action driven plot full of interesting characters, the supporting characters are also really well done, but not too much in the foreground. And the world of mystical beings created here is really intriguing. And the two children are cute and I had quite a lot of heartache because I was afraid the whole time that something terrible was about to happen.
I was so invested that I had trouble sleeping last night. Stupid me, I had the last 70 pages left and couldn't for the life of me figure out how this plot could even begin to be resolved satisfactorily.
I'm so relieved that the author didn't go down the path I feared. Oh dear, I think I need to recover from this for a couple of hours, I'm still all worked up.
Oh and Phil, sweet beautiful Phil ... love this character.

Sedrick’s rumble warmed my cheeks and plumped my cock. I ran the latest advertisements for Muriel’s Zombie Cleaning Service through my head, which quickly cooled my inappropriate libido. Memories of zombies picking brain matter off the wall and munching on it like candy will do that. 💞😂💞😂💞

A Joyfully Jay review.

This book seems to be a standalone, which is a criminal injustice. The world created by M.J. May in this story is warm and wonderful and I would happily devour an entire series about the pixies, vampires, weres, fae lawyers, and murderous garden gnomes. The world building is just familiar enough to anyone who reads a lot of paranormal romances, but there are small touches that make everything stand out in a new and delightful way. The gnomes especially. I loved the gnomes.

Honestly I loved Phil! Being a home and hearth pixie just sounded so ideal to me.

I enjoyed the custody storyline that is the main focus of the book, and seeing the bonds building between the family and Phil was really cute.

I do wish there'd been more with Sedrick's mine discovery because it gets mentioned a lot but we don't see the results.

I also really liked that there are zero sex scenes in this book! I would have liked more emotional content between Phil and Sedrick, and to have seen them in an actual relationship though. Essentially they get together at the very end of the book, so we only get the short epilogue where they're a couple! I wouldn't particularly say this was a romance, purely because there is no romance going on between the two MCs, just a steady increase in physical affection.

3.5 stars. So cute!! I had the brilliant idea of starting Fellow travelers and by the end of the first episode I was a sobbing mess . So of course immediately after I urgently needed something fluffy and light and I remembered Drache mentioning a sweet beautiful pixie. Phil the humble, shy and unlikely pixie was beyond sweet I totally loved him. The book is pretty similar to a manny/boss book and it’s a bit silly like almost all shifter books are but it’s very sweet and enjoyable. I really loved Phil and all the other characters except for the villains, of course. The love story is a bit bland and I would have really really liked some sex scenes because the short tease at the end was pretty 🥵 but overall it was a delightful read.

Perfectly Imperfect Pixie is a cute story about a Pixie named Phil who, due to his size at 6'2, is often not seen or treated as a pixie and Sed, an Alpha Werewolf who is fighting a custody battle for his dead brother's children. The children's maternal grandfather, a horrid man, is attempting to do everything in his power to get them.

While there is romance, it is secondary to the plot (80% is when feelings are officially defined and the spice is practically nonexistent), and the story's focus is on family and acceptance as both Sed and Phil work together to protect and raise the children.

While this story is outside of what I would typically read, I couldn't put it down as it was very engaging. It had great worldbuilding, plot, and characters that kept you pulled in.

Overall I enjoyed it. It was a great story about accepting, not having to change who you are because you do not fit in, and being proud of yourself. It was lovely seeing them get their HEA and keep their family together.

“Listen, Dillon. We’re different and have things we are good and things that others are better than us. No one can manage everything.”

“Get that through your head, Phil. I will do everything and everything I can to keep you safe and well.

“Want and hope were dangerous things. They were more addicting than any drug”.

Awesome and (first) sweet, nearing the end also slightly violent (but still sweet) fantasy romance with a definite hea.

LOVED IT.

I rarely read fantasy books, but this caught my eye.

Phil (short for Philodendron!) is precious. He is a home-and-hearth pixie, but differently from all the other pixies, he is big. He has long beautiful multicolored hair, from white-blond at the roots, to light pink and bright magenta at the tips, and big pink wings that can carry him long distances.
Like al pixies he hates violence, and can get timid because he has/had to suffer endless bullying because of his size.
AND he is (like all pixies) vegetarian...
I loved Phil so so much!

Phil finally found his first position as home-and-hearth pixie with Sedrick, a werewolf and his niece Ruthie and nephew Dillon.

The storyline was never boring, there was always something happening. Sedrick had to fight for this right to stay the children's guardian. Their grandfather was evil and caused many dangerous situations.
I loved the dynamics between Sedrick and Phil, their slowly growing attraction, their love for the children. Both Ruthie and Dillon were written in a very enjoyable way, they fit perfectly in the narrative and never took over.

The different side characters were awesome, too. Dwarfes, fayries, gnomes, and many others. Their backgrounds were interwoven in the story, there was no info-dumping.

I even enjoyed the swearing, it was fabuluos: Mother Earth! Goddess! Moon Goddess! Mother Goddess!

Ps there was some sexual innuendo, but no sex (there were adversaries to fight against first!). In the epilogue we find the couple in bed, though (very satisfying to see that everything really had been heading in that direction, haha).

Perfectly Imperfect Pixie had a lot less romance than I was expecting and that's not a bad thing! It's secondary to the plot. And the plot, characters, and world were nicely developed and really interesting. The romance we did get between Phil and Sedrick was sweet, and we do get a spicy scene at the end.

We follow Phil who is a pixie but is a bit of an outcast, seeing as he's a lot larger in stature than the typical pixie. He's a home-and-hearth pixie, and being intimidating in size has led to him having a lot of difficulty in finding jobs in that area.

Sedrick is looking after his niece and nephew after their parents died. His late sister-in-law's family is a ruthless and nasty pack, that she cut ties with and doesn't want anything to do with her kids. Despite this her father has started a custody battle, using any deceitful measure to undermine Sedrick claim to the kids.

This is where Phil and Sedrick first meet. Sedrick is in need of a home-and-hearth pixie with a bit more brawn to help take care of two werewolves children, which will also help in the custody battle.

Hmmm…. I’m still trying to figure out why this one missed for me. I liked the characters. I liked the world building. I found the concept and especially the many different species and their character traits interesting and entertaining. I also liked the premise and the overall plot. There’s a lot to like about this story but ultimately, I didn’t really connect with the characters and it’s hard to put my finger on why. There wasn’t anything off putting or offensive and I wouldn’t even say I was bored, I found this one hard to put down, I needed to get to the resolution. But… but… but what? 🤔 I liked the concept, characters and world, but for me the storytelling felt… flat? lackluster? The emotional hook never hooked me, the story never sparked joy or any real emotional investment in me. And though I actually really liked the world and would want to read more about it, the lack of sparkle and joy, the lack of that je ne sais quoi that lights up the happiness receptors in my brain, makes me disinclined to seek out more from this author.

KU.
I finished it.
Maybe it’s just my mood…
Just ignore my wish washy review, I’m quite interested in what my GR friends would say, think and feel about this story but no one on my friend list has read it yet. To my GR friends: Have any of you read anything else by M.J. May? Is this story an anomaly? Is it just my mood in this moment? Do your observations of May’s storytelling resemble mine?

Starting Perfectly Imperfect Pixie I believed it one of those cute stories full of fluff that are a nice pastime until I eventually find a book that grips me again. I admit I was also a bit wary of too much sweetness. What can I say, it is what I expected but not what I feared it would be.

It was the world building that caught me. I like PN stories where different species are living in the same world and struggle to find their place, their family or their special one and this book delivers. I enjoyed that world even while it's built on stereotypes or maybe even because of that. The fact that even the characters admit to those stereotypes makes them personable. They define their species but not their character. That way it was fun to read about M.J. May's take on well-known species like vampires, werwolves or fairies. For some she followed quite closely the lore defined by countless other such stories but for some like for gnomes and pixies she created something new. I liked that quite a lot and this world-building is also the reason why I hope this book will make it into a series.

And yes, the story about Phil the tall pixie who's not allowed to follow his dream and purpose because he doesn't fit the usual pixie appearance and how he finally finds his family and home, is sweet but that sweetness is balanced by the custody case his werewolf family has to fight and I have to agree with Sedrick's fairy lawyer that grandpa Ari is a worthy opponent and villain.

So world-building, check; finding family and friends, check; conquer a villain, check; but romance … that's the reason of rounding the rating down instead of rounding it up because while there is the set-up for a romance and there are the vibes and the attraction, it's completely, utterly secondary. Everything else is more important, even the mining success. Only shortly before the end after everything is done and dusted Sedrick and Phil get their moment. It was more like the author remembered at the last minute that a romance was also supposed to happen.

This was such a great surprise and I am so happy that I got an ARC for this book and got to experience this story.
it was a lovely story about Phil, a slightly bigger pixie than normal, and how he finds his family in a patchwork family of weres.

Phil is a lovely person and I loved how he built a connection with Dillon and Ruthie ... and of course Sedrick.
these three are perfect for him and great characters as well.
I would have loved to see a bit more chemistry and action at the end, but it did not really minder my enjoyment of this book.

I really hope there will be more books in this world and that it will be made into a series. because there are some characters which would make great couples.

all in all a lovely story which I thorougly enjoyed and could not put down and I think it is one of my favorite books in this year

The book is fine. Really predictable but that's ok. The characters are cute and really get along, but the romance is almost non-existent and I don't see a point in being explicit in the epilogue. Might as well have kept it clean and you can market this to a wider audience. This is basically a children's book about a custody battle.

That said, this book is super heteronormative. Like, 1950's kind of heteronormative. May basically assigned the "woman" role to a pixie man and called it a day. It was really awkward how "perfect" the Phil was at the patriarchal notion of the perfect woman. Down to the obsession with pink and a love of keeping home. Meanwhile Sedrick was the quintessential 1950's man, complete with owning a mining Corp, a lawyer at his beck and call, and insisting on leaving the wife and kids "in the dark" about family concerns.

I liked the second half a lot more than the first half.

I was a bit annoyed with how gloomy the whole Arie Bellview thing felt at first. With the way he threw money at everything and how he always seemed to get his way. Even if he had to kill for it.

But then things finally started to come together and I really started liking this.

The relationship between Sedrick and Phil (hate the name btw) was very sweet even though we didn't get any steam. That didn't matter to me at all. It seemed to fit the story.

The kids were great too.

Very cute no steam well written romance. There was a fair amount of angst that I liked. I enjoyed the slow burn/sweet relationship between the MCs plus all the world building which for a standalone was quite adequate. The writing style was nice as well. Dual POVs and well written descriptions made this a good read. I am glad this was recommended to me.

Sweet, almost cozy, low spice urban fantasy. I like the treatment of the paranormals in this world. Fairies are terrifying, thank you!
The writing starts a little rough but by the time the story gets going, it smooths out enough to overlook it and enjoy the ride. Love Phil and the whole concept of pixies bonding.

This was an unexpected delight to read. I hadn't heard of this author. It has children in it - I don't generally like children in my reading. I really like to avoid them. I brought it because I liked the cover and thought it would be nice filler reading. I thought it would be my late night calm reading with probably no review. Man, was I wrong. This book was such a joy, the book I didn't know I needed. I hung on every word. It is not fast paced or razzle dazzle, there is no sex on page, it's not steamy, and yet it is deeply engrossing and deeply intimate. The world, which is contemporary paranormal, is subtle yet well drawn, the characters my crack.

I desperately wanted this to be home—with Sedrick, Dillon, and Ruthie. It felt like home. Deep inside, in that secret place that made me what I was, desperation clung to that fragile slip of hope with tenacious claws. I’d never wanted anything so badly in my life. Want and hope were dangerous things. They were more addicting than any drug. They whispered possibilities and promised happiness. They could raise your soul to impossible limits and crush it with the force of absolute destruction.

Looking at the other reviews I’m honestly a little confused as to how it worked for so many people.

Phil was the only character that felt real to me, Sedrick was more of a caricature of brooding werewolf stereotypes that didn’t seem to have anything deeper than basic surface level werewolf stuff going on.

There was no tension or chemistry between our two main characters…like…at all? I don’t think they had a single conversation that lasted more than a couple short sentences from either of them and the topics on all of these conversations was restricted to the children (which is fine but if you’re trying to tell me they are in love with each other…. No. They are co-parenting roommates at best.)

Base level looking at the writing style… I was also really disappointed. I got the feeling at the author didn’t know how to execute transitions between scenes very well and because of that we got a lot of unnecessary “traveling” scenes that really served no purpose.

Idk. I guess I had high expectations based on how many reviews this had and it just didn’t live up to it for me.

1.5 stars rounded up for the premise being unique and I did really like the children.

DNF @ 70%

**************Spoilers**************

One thing I can never stand is stupid main characters. When you have a rich, powerfully bully after you and your kids, ONE WOULD THINK you would get smart and start protecting yourself but NO!! Sedrick was all just like "whoaa, he did what???!! No way, I'm going to have to prepare myself" but did he? Absolutely not. And Phil!!! His parents are home-and-hearth pixies but somehow someway he can't recognize when he's bonding to a home? I mean?? COME ON!!!! Where is the logic in that? And don't even get me started on the miscommunication!!

This book was so unbelievable frustrating. I loved Phil and Sedrick as a concept and kept trying to read on to see if they would smarten up or at least start communicating, but NOPE! Couldn't continue so I stoped at 70%.

I do not recommend this book. Which is tragic because it had so much potential.

A sweet, low steam, slow developing romance between a pixie and werewolf, along with some big family bonding energy with two were-kiddos.

This is heavy in the world building & plot, with a big emphasis on the time the MCs are together with the kiddos, and working on legal custody drama.

I found it refreshing that this is super low steam (fade to blackish, at the veeeery end of the book) and was engrossed with the plot and Phil. I usually am reading high steam romances with werewolves and really liked this change of pace.

This audio reminded me how much I don't enjoy Cooper North, and wished it was only Tor Thom narrating it 😅

Almost had a panic attack until I saw, that there is a book 2. This book was so cute. Cinnamon roll meet Grumpy Uncle with two charges. Also an over ran garden full on gnomes. We aren't talking about the cartoon version.

Ending it on a hot and heavy scene of heavy petting. Genius!

4.25 stars. Cute story and the book blurb sucked me right in. Who doesn't want to read about a 6ft. pixie that just wants a home and a place to belong?? Very sweet and not "insta" which I appreciated. A little more sexy heat between them would have been fun though.

The first part of the book was a bit repetitious, yes yes we know he is big and strong but we kept getting reminders like this:
"Posey’s excitement was contagious. She gripped my wrist in her smaller hand and tugged me along. I was bigger and stronger and could have fought it but didn’t."

That does stop though and we get right into the story. Phil- love his full name- is the most reluctant bouncer and when a new job offer comes his way, he is beyond thrilled and would do anything to keep it. Thankfully, he is in the capable hands of Sedrick, a were that has inherited his brothers 2 children after the parents die. WE know there is something fishy going on with that situation, but the characters don't really follow that line of questioning until Ruthie reveals all at the end.

I enjoyed the world building here, the other pixie's as well as the fairies like Ray. And that whole Gnome Situation was hysterical. My grandma loved gnomes so this was a blast from the past with a twist. Ruthie and Dillon are terrific kids and the love they had for Phil was sweet.

2 things- I never discovered why Dillon was so concerned about prices, was his family poor before they died?
And if Arie was so smart, cunning and destructive as they say, why did he not cause trouble at the mines? It would have been easy to cut off Sed's income so he couldn't pay to fight him.

This was a very cute mm story. Slow burn and not at all steamy.
I didn't know that this is a mm story until I started it (my bad for not reading reviews). But I'm glad I didn't know it, because I might wouldn't have read it. The story is so fluffy it would have been a shame not to read it.

Honestly, Perfectly Imperfect Pixie was not at all what I expected. There’s little to no romance and zero smut, which isn’t a bad thing at all, as the plot kept me hooked. & all in all was just a super sweet read!

Contemplating reading Peaches’s story, as I really liked his character.

This was such a sweet book! I loved Phil and I really felt for him and his struggles with not looking the way others expected pixies to look and not being able to work his dream job because of it. It was so nice to see him find his home and be able to be himself with Sedrick's family. The romance had a lot of lovely mutual caretaking and was very sweet, although I could have done with more on-page couple time. The side characters were great too, and there was a lot of fun worldbuilding that made the setting feel rich and left me wanting to read more in this world.

This book was ok. It was interesting to learn about the world Phil lives in, and how the various species interact. There was a smidge of attraction between the MCs, with a tiny bit of private time between them at the very end but this book was more about Phil falling in love with the house, the kids, and Sedrick’s life than with Sedrick himself. I would barely call this a romance. Not my favorite and there are far better paranormal mm romances out there.
