A guide to using the online social network provides information on creating a profile, communicating with friends, using Facebook applications, and using Facebook to promote projects and businesses.
Dave Awl is a Chicago-based writer and performer. As a tech writer and social media aficionado, he's the author of Facebook Me! A Guide to Having Fun with Your Friends and Promoting Your Projects on Facebook and a regular contributor to The Adobe Illustrator Wow! Book (both from Peachpit Press), and has written about LinkedIn for CreativePro.com.
As a Chicago-based poet, playwright, and fringe theater performer, Dave is an alumnus of Chicago's popular Neo-Futurists theater company, and has appeared on NPR's This American Life. His scripts have been included in three book collections of material from the long-running original show Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind, and his work has been performed in high school, college, and regional theater productions across the country. He was the editor for the third book collection of Neo-Futurist scripts, entitled 200 More Neo-Futurist Plays (published by Hope and Nonthings in 2004).
In 2002, a book collection of Dave's writing was published under the title What the Sea Means: Poems, Stories & Monologues, 1987-2002 (Hope and Nonthings Publishing).
Dave's poetry and short fiction have been published in After Hours magazine, Milk Magazine, and Blithe House Quarterly. In addition to his work with the Neo-Futurists, he founded the Pansy Kings performance series, has performed with Theater Oobleck and Tellin' Tales Theater, and currently hosts a cabaret variety show called The Partly Dave Show.
Something like this is almost immediately out of date. FB continually changes it's set up and privacy or other settings. Now that Facebook uses Timeline and will be using Timeline for its business pages as well, this book looses a lot of "how to" oomph because what it has is not exactly fact on how to do things. Some of it is the same though or "almost" the same. Still, I'd recommend people who are totally out of their depth but want to use FB to read a book like this. But for the typical user, all of this stuff is pretty self explanatory, and the more detailed sections are nearing being out of date or already are erroneous.
This is soooo user friendly that I have now bought one for both my parents. I can now do alot of the things my kids know how to do! YEAH ME! Watch out facebook, I am on to you.
This is a GO GIRL, book! You know the books that help you be and become whom you want to without limits!
I need a new addition of this to come out, Mr. Author, Dave Awl, because Facebook is already making changes I can't keep up with and I like your style of pictures and writing better than FB, helpful (so called explanations).
This is going to be a useful book to read. I agree that facebook constantly changes their format alot to keep up with the times. I didn't realize this book shows you how to get around facebook if you are have a question about what their terms mean this is useful for first time users as well as for those that have been long time members of facebook. This book is a must have for people from highschool age to the older generation.
I learned a few new tricks in this book, and found myself stopping several times to check out the item on Facebook that was mentioned on a particular page in the book. There are good examples (including screenshots) of the things mentioned in the book. I think it would be an even more interesting read for people who are newer to Facebook.
As he states in his intro, fb changes so much that not every piece is exactly the same anymore. This was put together just before the big change lots of people have been griping about. It does, however, make my phone app make more sense. The app has not caught up with the changes and I was wondering why it didn't work the same.
As with any book on software or the internet, it can quickly become dated as with this book. But it still gave me a greater insight into facebook and introduced me to new applications and a better understanding of facebook. I normally just play games on the site, now with this book will be making it more me.
I have just finished reading this. I read it for the same reason I read the LinkedIn book - because I have just joined it and want to get an idea of its capabilities. This book was interesting, but, like the one on LinkedIn, "it left me wanting more." I'm still waiting for the definitive work on Facebook.
This book was excellent. A lot of pertinent information presented very clearly. I was able to find what I wanted to know about, plus a bit more. This is the book I would recommend to anyone who wants to know how to find their way around on Facebook a little better.
