The Black House

Rate this book
I’ve prayed to forget, to drown the memories of bloodshed and sorrow in the shadows of my mind.
On most days, it works, but when faced with the opportunity to return, I don’t battle it long.
Even if I wanted to, I couldn’t. The voice in the back of my head calls me home. It begs for me to come back.
How could I ignore the whispers when they sound so much like you?
The one I lost.
The one I’m desperate to have again.
I never thought it could be possible, but with The Lord, everything is. And when he puts you before me, you aren’t the same.
But then again, neither am I.
I was told to walk in the light my entire life, but it was the dark I lived in, after all.

I’m old enough to remember the cults of the seventies and eighties. Reading The Black House is like stepping back in that time with a dark romance twist.

The Black Hoise is full of triggers. Please make sure and read them. This book is not for everyone, and that is okay.

Dark✔️

Cult vibes ✔️

Twits you don't see coming ✔️

Suspense ✔️

Captivating ✔️

Taboo ✔️

What started in bloodshed ended with a dark twist. I loved every single minute of it and fell down the dark rabbit hole.

Namoi is looking for a connection and dealing with grief after that horrible night and just going through the motions of life. But honestly, not living. She is fiercely loyal to a fault. Now years later, she is back where it all began.

As far as cult books go, this one doesn't seem recycled. It’s original and nothing like the others. I think that it is why I loved it so much, and it left me wanting more. On my dark scale, it's black—a must-read for any dark romance reader.

My mood has been the worst lately. 😈
I need disturbing and dark and have been eating reading them like hotcakes.
The Black House sure as hell delivers.
If there's one thing that scares me in this life, it's religious cults.

Look out for TW and run for your life.

Faith had always been a strong foundation in Naomi’s life. When an unspeakable tragedy hit her community, she felt displaced in a new world away from everything she knew. But her curiosity led her back to where she belonged and made her realize the value of her beliefs.

This was my first read of the author, and I’m glad to say it exceeded my expectations. It provided everything I like in dark books - unhinged characters, suspense, and sexiness.

I crave him like a drug, a secret. A sin.

I’ve been Team Birdy from the beginning even though at times I wanted her to be more assertive. I also enjoyed the other characters and how they fit into the story. This book was gorier than I anticipated and made me cringe a few times.

The Black House is a story of blind faith and obsession. It would appeal to readers who enjoy a short cult-based dark romance.

Anyone who knows me knows how much I adore any books on cults and religion so to have a book on a religious cult had me running to sign up!
We meet Naomi who is a member of the Black Parish who on Unholy Night , a night where two children are selected by god through Lord Black to ascend. Naomi hopes that herself and the boy who was promised to her Laz are chosen. On the night the entire parish is massacred with Naomi being the only survivor. Now going by Birdy as she doesn’t really talk Naomi is in a home for troubled children when one night her and two friends decide to go back to the woods that Naomi called home and see the community for themselves. During the years Naomi has listened to people saying that her family were cultists, that the elders and Lord Black did unsavoury things to the children chosen on Unholy Night, Naomi would not let them break her faith or turn her against everything she knew of course we know what was happening and the whispers she was hearing are true.
Once they get to the woods that Naomi grew up in things take a turn for the worst, I wont say what but there are twists you didn’t see coming and ending that left me shocked and a justice and retribution that was a long time coming.
This story is eerily haunting and dark, very dark so please do heed to warnings in the beginning of the book.

Um I- wow. Oh. My. Gosh. What did this book do to me? I'm forever destroyed. My mind was blown, my body in the biggest chills and my heart? Oof I don't even know. C. A. Mariah always amazes me with the dark and all consuming love stories that have no limits between the lovers whatsoever and The Black House was no different, in fact it was even more so 👌🏽🖤

Laz and Naomi's love story is truly painted in black like wow it goes to places you simply cannot expect, with every turn of a page you are on the edge waiting where the road leads you next, what more comes creeping from around the corner 😱 This is definitely not for ones sensitive to these subjects as there's no limits on the eerie, dark and twisted things that goes on within these pages.

I was shaken to the core with how deep the love between Laz and Naomi goes and how truly perfectly taboo it is; these two definitely cross the line all the way to the darkest side you could imagine 👀🤫 They're also spicy as heck and full of passion so powerful and raw; I was all here for it tbh!

As much as this had me utterly shook, wide eyed and heart beating a little faster the entire journey I didn't want it to end. That epilogue though, woah it took me by suprise the most, I think all of us felt that, I didn't even think it was possible at that point anymore but gaah it so did!

Such an epic and gruesome tale; the absolute perfect read for the spooky season!

All her life, Naomi dreamed of serving Lord Black and hoped Holy Night was the time she and her brother, Lazarus, would be chosen. Yet, fate had a different plan, one Naomi did not foresee.

“I always loved your tears, Naomi. Did I ever tell you that”

Narrated from Naomi’s point of view, the story begins with a naïve teenager raised in a religious cult until it all irrevocably changes. With such a loss, Naomi learns to adapt even when she is ostracized by her peers. But one night, an opportunity arises to reclaim what she lost.

Before starting this book, my expectations were high given the genre and creepy vibe and it certainly exceeded my preferences. Naomi is an intriguing character, as she elicited different reactions ranging from empathy to shock. She is a character that should not be underestimated. As the plot progressed, Naomi showed her true colors and this leads to an interesting development.

The Black House is about survival and redefining family. This book would appeal to those seeking a cultish horror read.

I received an arc of this book and this is my honest review.

Rating: 2,5 - 3 ⭐️

I’m not someone that looks at TW very often, but this book made me regret that a bit.
There were some invents in this book that just doesn’t sit well with me and (for me) that made this book challenging.

The Black House is heavy on the triggers, so pls check them!

In this book we follow Naomi (Birdy) that grows up with her brother (Zane) in a very religious and orthodox cult called the Black Parish.
At the top of this cult is Lord Black, he also, through God, selects two children to ascend Holy Night. One of those Holy Nights was violently interrupted by men going on a killing spree and ‘cleansed’ the Black House, Naomi is the only one who survived. After she was found, she refused to speak about the events that happend on Holy Night and was send to a place for troubled children.

Although I do have some questions and opinions about the very orthodox/cult stuff in the book, we all know that some of the heavy stuff are happening in real life, so I was curious to see we’re the author would take it. It was very obvious that Birdy was brain washed and a firm believer, that to me was very interesting. But I did hoped we would learn more about Birdy her life after the cult, surviving it and dealing with the trauma that was inflicted upon her. But instead the author took a 180• and we went down a very different, and twisted, path. Which tbh, gave me the ick at times. I did enjoy bits of the turn that the author decided to make, I was very much curious to see what will happen next.

I don’t want to spoil anything, I went in blind and if you are still intrigued by this book after this review and checking the TW, I suggest you do the same! This story isn’t for everyone and I was struggling how to rate it, for me it’s a 2,5 - 3 ⭐️

OMG, I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH.
Okay, First of all: this is my first book by the author, but the blurb and cover conquered me from beginning: the whole terror vintage vibe it’s just stunning, plus the triggers (yes, i’m read books on account the triggers, dondn’t judge so much): religious cult, child abuse and twisted love… yeah, this book captured me.
Here we have the story about Naomi, a fourteen years girl who lives in a religious community and, in a simplistic way, is blind to mistakes and errors evolving in this place. People always told her to respect the ‘kind and benevolent’ leader, she dreams to the day that she would be chosen by him, so she would ascend to the holy grace. Well, this doesn't happen, because the whole community is butchered and the only survivor is her. 3 years later, still believing the community it’s a sacred place with everything in it, she and three other friends go back to this community. I don’t want to spoil anything, but only say that blood, gore and a twisted relationship are in progress in this narrative. Just love so much and, if you are looking for a great story this Halloween, go grab this.

“The boy I loved isn’t a boy anymore, and I’m starting to believe I may not be as moral as I thought.”

If you have any sort of morals, walk… no, RUN, away from The Black House. This horror romance novella is not for the faint of heart. If you can’t handle forbidden/taboo subjects and things that go bump in the night, then this book is not for you. However, if you can handle and love all that stuff, you should dive into the chaos that is The Black House.

“We’ve been waiting for you, little one.”

I didn’t see Laz and Naomi/Birdy’s story coming at all. This book blew me out of the water and made me question absolutely everything. Normally, I’m not into books that are set in the past, but The Black House was kind of perfect. It was a nice change of pace from reading about teenagers playing on their phones. And horror stuff… not my normal cup of tea. I seriously devoured The Black House. And need more, please!

As stated before, The Black House is taboo and forbidden and I’m ALL for it. Laz and Birdy/Naomi have been through hell and back… when they find one another again, DAMN, these two are nuts together. They’re evil little creatures who eventually get the revenge that they deserved. I was cheering for them during the revenge because ughh… that guy HAD to go.

“If Laz can embrace the dark, then so can I. God, forgive me, but I feel like I’m about to sin. And I can’t wait.”

The ending was SHOCKING. I mean, I expected part of it, but the other part? Yeahhh, that surprised me. I realize you’re probably going, “what in the world are you talking about?” Unfortunately, I can’t say too much because it’ll spoil the whole story.

If you’re trigger-free and enjoy taboo/forbidden, The Black House is a book that you need to go into blindly and just enjoy every damn minute of it.

OMFG!! That was exactly the kind of creepy and gory horror story I freaking love. It had everything, darkness, cult vibes, depravity, bloodiness, violence, sex, and a whole lot of adrenaline inducing moments that had me literally biting my nails off.

Right from the very beginning my heart was beating erratically, my stomach was in knots and my mind was conjuring dark images in my head from the words I was absorbing. I was addicted to the darkness that was seeping out of the pages and I never wanted it to end!

Naomi (loved this girl), she was so sweet and innocent. Her devotion to her faith is unbreakable and she will do anything that is asked of her. But when utter destruction rips her world right out from under her, she gets stuck in a never-ending cycle of just surviving each day. When the opportunity comes up for her to visit her old life, Naomi feels it deep in her heart that this was the right choice to make.

Where things go from here you need to experience the bloody rollercoaster ride yourself. Be prepared to be shocked, grossed out a bit (you might gag), entertained and then questioning your morals. But if you’re like me, every deliciously dark and bloody second of this story filled my black heart with happiness and left me craving more.

Hold on tight as you are about to be thrown down a dark and depraved rabbit hole of utter debauchery that you may or may not make it back out of in one piece!

Brilliantly written creepy horror story that I absolutely loved!

The Black House by @c.a_mariah ARC review

Holy shit!! I am speechless and blown away with this novella. I read it in one sitting because I NEEDED to know what was going to happen next.

Naomi and Laz have been inseparable since the minute they found each other. When you found one the other was always right behind no matter what. On Holy Night everyone was in the church when all you can hear was "bang, bang" and screaming. Naomi went to go find Laz when all she saw was a puddle of blood.

Naomi becomes quite and barley speaks anymore. She is at a home with other kids and everyone just makes fun of her, spreads rumors and calls her birdy. One night Heather, Richie, Birdy and Steven go back to the place she used to call home. What started as exploring the one place she knew as home turned Sinister.

"I couldn't find you, Naomi. I tried, I really tried, but the harder I pushed, the more I was shoved back into the chaos. I didn't feel the gunshot, not at first. I was too scared that you were dead to worry about myself, but then my vision went blurry, and I couldn't breath... I think I died."

"You lived Laz."

"No I didn't, because when I finally woke up, you were gone. I think I died every day waiting for you to come back to me."

I loved Laz and Naomi together! I NEED more of them.

I'm in heaven?! Maybe this shouldn't be the right place to be after reading this story, maybe an inverted dimension of everything you've ever known...The Black House is a definitely not normal love story, but whoever said abnormals don't love also.

Naomi (Bird) and Laz (Lazarus) are not fooled, growing up in a totally different world, and following something they believe in and that the one who keeps them is their savior, they both believe they will find their purpose together, but fate has other plans causing their worlds to be destroyed, following different paths Naomi finds herself in a fragile shell more confident that her place is not among people who don't believe in her, before that everything changes when she returns to her home and discovers that neither everything is lost and that life requires sacrifices for you to exalt yourself to the "Lord" and have your happily ever after.. even if for that she has to give up everything and the one she believes in. Will Naomi and her doctrines and beliefs save her?

Wow!! This adventure was a roller coaster of emotions and feelings, with amazing characters and absolutely well built and the way Mariah developed them won my heart, yes this book is twisted, dark, and contains triggers and it's not for everyone, but it was amazing. .I'm looking forward to more!!
PS: The Black House contains strong scenes and triggers, if that's not a problem, have a good ride and keep an open mind...

Well, me and Laz. “It must be us both, then,” I whisper, holding my best friend and brother's hand in mine. We’ve been inseparable since birth, practically joined at the hip. It was destined to be that way, since our delivery was only months apart. Laz’s blue eyes sparkle in the dusty shadows, hopeful that he, too, will be chosen. That way, we would never be separated. We would stay at each other's side, just as we’ve done since birth.

//

This was good. Like, REALLY good. There were quite a few twists and turns that end up happening to Naomi, aka Birdy, once she does set foot on the land of the Black House again, that had me in every type of emotion. Not to mention, the prose and atmosphere were exquisite. My favorites, of course, were Naomi and Laz. How could they not be, ya know?

I'd definitely go into this pretty blind. Honestly, it just made everything that much better when reading this, which felt less like a book and more like an experience. I'm going to be thinking about this for a while.

//

“You’re going to be mine one day… right, Naomi? We were promised from birth.” Confused, I tip my head to the side, letting my damp, braided hair fall to my hips. Then, with a smile on my face, I take his hands, the way I’ve done since I could move. “Of course. We’re fated, Laz, for eternity.”

WOW!! This was freaking bizarre and I loved it. Just warning you now, This is definitely NOT for everyone! I was captivated from the beginning and it took me by surprise. Talk about anxiety lol this book gave me all of it.

Laz and Birdy/Naomi have to be my new favorite dark characters. They’re freaking WICKED together. Two people that will literally kill for each other. 💀 After being separated when they were younger, Naomi knows she needs to be home and when an opportunity comes they finally reunite. And what a damn, reunion!!

“𝐈𝐟 𝐋𝐚𝐳 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐤, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐬𝐨 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐢. 𝐆𝐨𝐝, 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐞, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐢 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐢𝐦 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐢𝐧. 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐢 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐢𝐭."

OMG, that ending!! Ugh, I need more. I was on the edge of my seat for this one. I loved the darkness and all of the gore.
If you can handle DARK and forbidden/taboo then The Black House is for you. And I most definitely would recommend going in blind.

First things first — if you’ve read anything by CA Mariah you know she doesn’t shy away from the dark side of things so, check TW before diving in.

Before I get into my review let me just say I’ve been following CA Mariah since her very first book and I’m so proud to say everything she puts out just keeps getting better and better. I will quite literally read anything she puts out at this point.

Now, listen here, y’all — The black House is hard to review because it’s pretty short and one of those books I think you should just go into blind and enjoy the wild twisted ride. If you like dark, spicy, twisted, bloody, murderous, religious cult vibes then this is right up your alley. It’s the perfect little Halloween read.

It follows a Birdy aka Naomi who is raised in a religious cult that basically gets slaughtered and she is the only one that survives. One Holy Night her friends convince her to go back to where it all began for her and that’s where our story takes a dark turn.

If you want a book that will leave you asking yourself, “wtf did I just read” (in a good read) then The Black House is perfect for you.

4.5 Always Stars! 🖤

Having read all of Ms.Mariah's work so far i couldn't wait for more from her! As soon as she announced this story i was so happy! It had my interest piqued right away. I got into this story so quickly. I loved it!

Naomi's journey hooked me! Going into this story I didn't know what all to expect. I dived right into the darkness.

I loved the way this story kept me on my toes, wondering what all was going to happen next. There were moments that had holding my breath, heart beating out of my chest, redness brought to my cheeks, and all kinds of emotions.

This story, it's characters, and the setting were so vivid in my mind. You need to experience The Black House for yourself.

With The Black House, Ms.Mariah brought the darkness in such a one of a kind package! I was left staring at my kindle by the time I finished because I couldn't stop thinking about this story! I can't wait for more from this author! Definitely check this book out this year! 🖤

Be sure to read the author's warning. 🖤

"𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠."

Dark, creepy, gory, eerie, macabre, depraved, and taboo. That’s the first things that come to mind when I think of this novella, because lord have mercy.

This was such a refreshing short read from this author and I am in dire need of more. I believe dark/ horror romances have always been my thing, and this definitely solidified that for me.

The experience, though a short one, will leave your grasping for more. Wishing it was longer. You can’t but psycho analyze these characters as you learn more about them and their pasts. At the same time though, you kind of want to give them a hug after their traumatic experiences. At least I did.

Long story short, without spoilers obviously, please read this novella. It is an experience, in my opinion.

Definitely recommend, but please do read trigger warnings before hand!

5 DISTURBING STARS!
What did I just read? Tbh while starting to read I was like okay I'll be reading two books at a time but I was so wrong. This book alone captured my attention and after the prologue, I was keen to know more and more until I realized there is no more *silently crying*

So dark and haunted. This took the so-called holy placed into the dark twisted turn. I didn't expect this darkness!! Honestly, I don't wanna disclose much cuz this book needs to be enjoyed without spoilers. Anything extra will be a spoiler!!

Tropes:
🩸Dark so so dark
🩸Religious Cult
🩸Taboo Romance but it's so good and sinful
🩸Bloody full-on bloody vibe!
🩸Gore
🩸Thriller and mystery you can't resist!!

(ARC REVIEW)
Have you ever read a book so messed up that you question your mental state? That is me with this book. I was hooked once I read the trigger warning so make sure you read them before diving in. If you are a risk taker thank skip them. Know there is religious wording but this book also is not for the faint of heart. Now that I gave a heads up know that I absolutely positively loved this book. My dark little soul ate up the words from the first page to the last. There is so much packed into this novella and it's fantastic. If you like crazy messed up and question yourself book then this book is for you.

Another story that deserves 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
This story is just as twisted as the last, and I was engrossed in it until the very last page.
C.A Mariah is definitely an author that knows how to capture the dark minds of her characters. So well in fact that I almost had to put this book down Because she just made everything so vivid as she brought it to life.
I would advise you read the trigger warnings though, they're there for good reason. So if you can't handle the twisted nature of Dark themes, ritualistic cults, human sacrifice and torture and ALOT of Blood, then this story is not for you.
But if you're one for scary movies, and the like, then read on if you dare....

I’m not sure why but I loved this so much.
Had to skim over some graphic gore because I’m squeamish. Only thing I will say is that I wish the book was longer and it dived deeper into some things.

While this doesn’t make the book less by any means because it was clearly the author’s intention to make this less heavy on world building.

I will say tho I wish we had more information on certain things.

Also the ending where the author says see you again on holy night 1990 something… was it the authors intent to write a second book? That would have been amazing.. but I’m not sure this author even writes anymore

The Black House is depraved, haunting, and eerie, the trinity of spooky reads. Every layer of Birdy is mysterious and intriguing. Reunited with her isolated home brings unsettling events to her and her unsuspecting friends.

This novella is a page turner, more like burner, you have to read in one sitting! There are secrets to unravel and an eerie suspense warping Birdy. As a reader, I didn’t know if I could trust her instincts or those of any character introduced.

However there’s a haunting reunion and a kinship of lost souls. The suspense is always lingering throughout the book, keeping you on high alert.

Needless to say, I’m captivated by the darkness C.A. Mariah has casted. I’m most certainly looking for more of this world.

As always, there’s a long list of TW so please read beforehand.

What did I just read? This darkest read surprised me all along. I devoured it in no time, unable to put it down as I was anxious to see how the story would unfold.
Compelling, gripping, Naomi's sickening life had me wanting to hide behind my hand. It's twisted, sad, and explores the brainwashed minds of the two young characters. I could totally see vividly the words and the black atmosohere the author painted.
This is not an easy read, but I recommend it if you're in the mood for a horrific love story. Are you ready?

This was so good! Although c.a. Mariah never disappoints! This book has so much depth and it didn’t take me long to finish it. It had an air of mystery about it that I loved while also having beautiful words throughout it. There are some definite triggers in this book so please be aware before you read, if you don’t mind them, please enter the black house!
