“Yes, sir.”

Galen Harmon lives to hear those two words. And for fifteen years he lived the dream with a submissive who’d knelt at his feet and offered that simple phrase over and over again.

But then she was gone. Ripped away in a heartbeat of savage betrayal and anguish that still haunts him.

Until he met Alex.

She’s everything that was taken from him. Obedience and submission, willing to follow his every rule, his every protocol…

Perfection.

But Galen Harmon is a man with secrets. A past and present that could put her life at risk.

If he tells her.

And when she demands the truth, he has a decision to make.

Give her the very thing she insists to keep their relationship alive…

Or let her go.

Before it’s too late

USA Today bestselling author Shane Starrett loves to take his readers into the (sometimes) deeply dark but always seductive worlds of strong women and sinful romance. With a focus on BDSM themes, he explores the unique dynamics which take place between partners living 'in the lifestyle,' with an emphasis on the beauty and inherent strength of the bonds created between people who aren't afraid to tap into their kinky sides. With attention to themes such as trust, communication, understanding, and compromise (and always a dash of humor), Shane loves to explore the ever shifting but always fascinating forces at work between people falling into or already in love.

When he isn’t writing on those subjects (which isn’t often), he can be found in his Texas home with his wife of thirty-three years, either working in his shop, cooking, or daydreaming about another steamy, sexy story.

The latest entry in the long-running Black Light BDSM club series features Galen and Alex. Both love high protocol kink, but have no luck finding play partners. When fairy godfather Terry sets them up, each thinks the other is perfect. But Galen is keeping two very big secrets from Alex...

While there was a lot to like here, ultimately, it wasn't for me. I'll begin with the positives. Since I prefer intelligent, independent female characters who are submissive in only certain areas of their lives, Alex was, for me, a dream MFC. The clingy Cinderella is overused in this genre and, thankfully, absent here. In addition, the prose was well-edited; secondary characters made impressions; and the kink scenes well-described and completely consensual.

My problems were two-fold. First, at least one of the "secrets" that Galen keeps from Alex is completely extraneous to the couple; therefore, the considerable amount of narrative space devoted to a plot point that I neither understood nor found that interesting slowed the pace down to a snail's.

Second, and far more importantly, were the numerous red flags surrounding Galen. His inability to control his emotions and his obsessiveness; his lack of made him a poor dominant and an even worse romantic partner. While I understand that this characterization was deliberate on the author's part I found him so problematic (can anyone be that obtuse?) that I couldn't root for the MC's relationship and, once I think that, I can't invest in the story. I particularly didn't buy that Alex would . Ultimately, I felt that this book really focused on Galen and that Alex was too often little more than a plot device that facilitates Galen's character growth. Since male-dominated narratives already make up about 90% of all literature and I read this genre in large part because it is so female-centered, this book wasn't for me.

3 stars. I suspect that some of what I say above will bother others; many readers, though, love this world. We do get a teaser for the next book. Side Note: Hmm...I wonder who Gilded Angel can possibly be?

ETA: Well, it didn't take long for someone to spoil the ending -- only a day, in fact.

Shane Starrett has taken Black Light: Protocol and written a sensational story with likeable and relatable characters. Galen and Alex's story was full of innuendo and captured high protocol dynamic perfectly for this couple.
This book was full of misunderstanding, communication that does not go the way it's planned, but it's also beautiful in it's description of people searching for what they need, finding their place and achieving that acceptance and peace that we are all looking for.
Black Light stories always capture me in the best ways and Shane has added to this remarkable group wonderfully.

A Masterpiece of Writing… Well done!!

If you haven’t read any books in this series, you are missing out on some amazing stories written by fabulous authors and this latest entry by Shane Starret is no exception!!

It is always a pleasure to read his books because in addition to a wonderful story, Shane gives the reader an added bonus of personal insight into his characters behaviors and relationships past and present. All of this makes for a gripping story that you can’t put down!!

While there is no “one true path” when it comes to living the bdsm lifestyle, High Protocol is basically a set of rules (or pre-determined etiquette) that are deemed acceptable behavior for a submissive in a D/S relationship. It’s like a form of training that a dominant can give their submissive so that (subtle) control can be had over them for things such as special occasions, punishments, or as a 24/7 rule depending on the relationship. Galen had that connection with a previous sub and as weird as this may sound, he doesn’t feel complete or satisfied without it. He is just a Dom going through the motions. With a little help from one of the Dungeon Monitors Terry aka “Muscles” Galen meets Alex and his life will never be the same.

Both Galen and Alex are smart, capable people who know what they want out of the relationship and neither one will settle for less. Shane takes us on a roller coaster ride as our couple will have to navigate some turbulent feelings leftover from the past as they get to know one another while working out the details of what is expected. And trust is high on that list because without it, you have nothing. Galen and Alex aren’t perfect, they have their flaws, but it’s how they deal with them and grow as people to find what they are both looking for and need to feel whole again.

High Protocol is a masterpiece of writing that shines the spotlight on what defines this type of lifestyle and the work required to establish the bond. But once in place, it is a deeply rewarding relationship for both partners that will provide a lifetime of unparalleled pleasure.

Once again Sir, you have more than met my expectations of a well written romance!!

Thanks Shane, great addition to Black Light series. For me the best since Roulette Rematch. I thoroughly enjoyed this journey into High Protocol with some interesting insights. Galen and Alex were relatable main characters and I was glad we were spared any unnecessary immature angst as they worked through the issues in their developing relationship.

High protocol is the focus of this story and it
was very interesting to read a part of bd$m that
is rarely mentioned. It was a hot, sexy story filled
with many scenes that have you looking forward
to what comes next. I enjoyed delving into this type
of dynamic and would love to read more like this.

I had to sit on this story after reading it before I could write this review, because for me, it was amazing. Seriously, I thought Shane Starrett did a great job on Submissive Lies, but he outdid himself with BL’s Protocol. Alex and Galen were both great characters. I liked how down-to-earth Alex was. She knew what she wanted and she was prepared to walk away from any relationship/circumstance if it didn’t meet her needs. Galen was entertaining—the mansplaining and the presumptions he made came across as very real and I did cackle, a lot, when he got called on it. While their k1nk is high protocol, I really liked that Mr. Starrett didn’t go into details on what exactly it means—this is fiction and not a how-to—and instead gave us insight into their relationship through their actions. And seriously…Mia was my favorite character and stole the story with her scenes. I loved how supportive she was of Alex and how she happily busted Galen’s balls every chance she had—and he DID deserve it. Every. Time.

A boring trip to Black Light

Who knew I would be bored by a Black Light book? I've been reading them since the first.
Why didn't this one engage me?
The author never actually defined high protocol, so I was guessing about a lot of things.
While it seemed clear that these folks were successful professionals, they had no personal depth. I will give the author credit for having them hash out his past relationship as necessary to moving forward.
But mostly, even the sex scenes left me cold.
I was impressed that she knew enough to run when he wanted her to move in with him after two months. At least she had a head on her shoulders.
Enough. I look forward to the next trip to Black Light. Hopefully it will be better.

Not the best Blacklight

I'm in the process of reading straight through the entire Blacklight series and feel like I've gotten to know the recurring characters. In none of the other books is the secondary character Terry (Muscles) presented as an uneducated hick who has no mastery of the English language, so why Mr Starrrett felt a need to have Terry say things like "I ain't got....." repeatedly and to make him sound like a dumb muscle bound idiot is simply offensive to me as a reader. Plus it's disrespectful to this character and very disrespectful to the other authors who have taken the time to create this character. The main male character is for most of this story much more of an idiot no matter how rich he is.

I didn’t really like this story and should have perhaps given it 2 ½ stars. Gavin and Alex are both looking fir something and both are getting discouraged and ready to gave up until Terry, the Dungeon Monitor, brings them together. Gavin has experienced high protocol before but Alex has never been in this type of relationship except online. I didn’t like how the author had Terry constantly use the word ain’t. He is a large greatly muscled man and the use of ain’t makes him sound like the stereotypical dumb muscle bound meathead but he has better insight into what Gavin and Alex want than they seem to themselves. All seems to go well except Gavin will not share anything about hus last relationship and the danger and specifics of his job. He is not interested in Alex’s job, doesn’t know where she works or where she lives. He is happy with her service to him but Alex keeps waiting for him to trust her enough to share. Suddenly Gavin rushes the relationship and suggests she should just give up her job so she will be there for him always. He cannot understand why she refuses to be collared or give up a function that she has planned and must attend. Her life doesn’t seem that important to him and he appears arrogant and self centred . The author attempts to rehabilitation him with Mia and Terry steering him right. I do nit buy it. If he can’t see for himself what went wrong i do not believe that in the real world such a relationship would survive. So no, I didn’t like this book.

Mr. Starrett is a new to me author.
I loved his writing style. It’s sophisticated and I could tell he knew what he was writing about.
I liked his characters, Galen and Alex. Most especially Alex.
I loved how intelligent she was. She’s great at her job, knowledgeable about many things and absolutely doesn’t dumb herself down. I also loved how she knew exactly what she wanted and would accept no less.
Galen I liked more at the beginning. He too knew exactly what he wanted and also accept nothing else.
He started changing along the way. And not for the better. I don’t know why exactly he wanted Alex to change. She was amazing with up and went above and beyond. They had a good thing going.
Why he wanted what he did, I’m being vague as to not give any spoilers, didn’t compute with me.
His thought process didn’t make sense to me.
Galen isn’t a bad man though just to clear that up. Maybe confused?
During this time I didn’t see him as a reliable dominant. Everyone makes mistakes. But his were more complicated.
Overall though I enjoyed the book. And looking forward to reading more of this author’s books because he really did impress me with his writing.

It's hard to believe 'Protocol' by Shane Starrett is the thirty-third book in the ongoing "Black Light" series. I believe the series has brought forth a spectacular array of authors and Mr. Starrett is one I've discovered on this journey. This time he's introduced us to Galen and Alex. As I started reading, I immediately thought Galen was an alphahole but as the layers started being pulled back I realized, with a little help from Muscles, he was much more than that. And then there's Alex who didn't exactly put me in the mind of a submissive at first glance but then that thought was blown out of the water as well. What Mr. Starrett has given us with this story is a human, emotional story. One filled with flaws, emotions, mistakes, and eye-opening self-awareness. The storyline is gripping. The growth in these two, both individually and as a couple, is palpable. The chemistry and scenes are heart-pounding in their descriptions. What an amazing story it turned out to be.

I am not sure how to rate this book. It is well written but not what I expected. My expectations were different. I enjoyed how smart and independent Alex was and how she knew what she wanted and didn't go fo less. She also shows the importance of communication.

Galen wasn't a very likable character and I didn't think he was a very good Dom. He redeemed himself in the end.

What bothered me is that at the end of the book I still had no idea what high protocol meant for the characters or what made ir a high protocol relationship. There were rules and expectations and it seemed very service oriented but nothing stood out for me.

And for a Black Light book I missed having a scene at the club.

I had read the term "high protocol" in other books, but wasn't sure about what it entailed. After reading Galen and Alex's story, I am not sure the concept is that much clearer to me. I should say, other then high protocol being different to different people.

I found their relationship to be intriguing. Yet, I likened my understanding of high protocol to that word that is on the tip of your tongue, but you just can't think of it. My grasp of what they wanted from one another was elusive at some point.

When Galen and Alex first met, they seemed to be testing each other. At the same time they also seemed to be very in tune. Then I could feel the uncertainty creep in to the relationship.

This book did hold a couple of surprises, and secrets. One thing that there was never a full explanation about regarding Paul, Alex's father, and Galen's business.

The other thing that bothered me is that I was unable to create a picture in my mind of what Galen looked like or his age. Maybe I overlooked it. At least there was a brief description of Alex and her age toward the beginning of the book. It is hard for me to make a connection with the characters if I can't visualize them.

This is just my perception. I found the subject matter interesting. I liked the relationship the main characters started out building as both seemed to be content. After the blow up, acknowledgement, and repair, I would have liked to see more specific details regarding changes made in the relationship.

Galen and Alex do manage to reach their HEA or at minimum their HFN. I would give this 3.5 stars.

I voluntarily read and reviewed the Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

I love everything Black Light and find Mr. Starrett's writing style very pleasing so loving this one was easy. Galen and Alex have suffered in the romance department, with Galen's wounds seeming to be deeper, so they are both slow to trust. The things they want in a relationship seem to be more rare than some other kinks, and both of them are ready to just give up. And then they get set up on a blind kink date. Sparks fly, emotions get involved, and things move quickly. There are still some bumps in the road, but their level of determination and dedication may just be rewarded.

One of the things I love about Mr. Starrett's writing is the depth he goes with the internal dialogue and the emotions behind all the actions. It's not just steam and the reads aren't quick and simple. Everything, from the character's motivations to the connections betweeen them, are explored and explained. The steamy scenes are hot, but the mental connections are on another level. I don't think I've read antother story that had the High Protocol dynamic and I love that some of the basics are explained while still putting the emphasis on what works for each relationship. The idea that each kink has to be lived a certain way to be "correct" is something that's always bothered me, and this story stresses that the only people who get to decide how a relationship works are the people in that relationship. Consent and understand are highly stressed, but that doesn't mean communication comes easily to these two. That added a sense of reality to this delicious read. It was a fabulous addition to this series.

Galen and Alex are searching for a very specific D/s structure, and are both getting frustrated to the point of giving up on the search. They are brought together by a sympathetic dungeon monitor at Black Light.

They call their dynamic "High Protocol" and both find that most denizens of Black Light mean very different dynamics with the term than they are looking for. Galen is also haunted by a long-term relationship that crashed and burned. He thinks he is now over the relationship and ready to move on. (Narrator voice: "He was not over the relationship.").

Unlike most BDSM romances, this is mostly in people's heads. There is hot sex. There is hot dynamic. But most of this book is very, very psychological.

An excellently written book. There were also little nuances in the writing that I loved -- such as Alex conversing in Quebecois French without translation. So a lot of readers will be as confused as Galen was. I also LOVE Alex's mama. And Mia (a delightful side character who needs a Black Light book -- hint, hint).

OK, I'll be the first to admit I read to escape to new worlds, have adventures, enjoy the sexy time, ya know, all the stuff a grown woman needs 🤣
But that said, the best part about the Black Light books is at the core of them they're all just people, not perfect, not all knowing. They live, love, make mistakes, just like you and I. The difference is they get to have that hea everyone wants, well most everyone anyone.
But I digress, went on a verbal voyage there lol 😆. Was trying to explain how much I loved that Galen isn't the "perfect" book Dom. He screws up, feels pain and regret and has to work at communicating with Alex. Now she, she's my hero, a strong woman who knows what she wants and doesn't roll over belly up just because half of her is submissive.
This was an excellent story, started it and couldn't put it down, not til the end. Very good job Mr Starrett, Bravo.
Keep em coming.

Two people who find love in the desires for high protocol.

Galen was looking for a special woman who had the same kink he had which is high protocol. Alex was new to Black Light and she had a special kink that very few Doms knew and understood, and she would not settle for less. When a scene had gone wrong and the Dom became bitter, the dungeon monitor stepped in and shut it down. The dungeon monitor told her about a man that he felt would be good for her and he set it up for her and Galen to meet. The night they met, it was an instant attraction but he also gave her a challenge which she passed with flying colors. Everything seemed to be working but he had issues from his past he had to deal with. This is a great story to read and it shows how two people learn to trust and help each other let go of their past.

With every book in the Black Light series we see new dynamics and learn new ways relationships can develop, and Protocol is no different. On the surface Galen seem so much like a typical Alpha but he has so many layers which are explored in the book that draw a reader in and make things intensely personal. Alex is sweet and seemed almost unlike the typical submissive in ways, but they come together so well. As this story grows and builds, it's amazing to see how they interact, how they are almost real in ways and we, as readers, feel connected to them. Shane Starrett has done a masterful job with this book and any fan of the Black Light series or D/s lifestyle will find themselves enjoying it immensely.

High Protocol?

I thought I knew what that was.....until I didn't. I'd always assumed it was somewhat of a Dom/slave relationship. Well, Mr. Starrett schooled me on that!

I enjoyed this story from the very beginning. Most Dominants in stories are very self-assured and seem to know exactly what they want from a sub. And Galen is that until he isn't. I liked him a lot. He was a very caring and sexy man. I loved Alex though. She's exactly what I've always loved to see in a sub. Strong and yet submissive at heart.

It's a lovely story in that they seemed to be the perfect couple. Everything is going great until life outside intrudes. Which happens fairly often with all of us. But I was very surprised and somewhat shocked when it happened. When Galen tries to deal with something that comes up in Alex's life, I was honestly amazed (and not in a good way) that he took it as far as he did without realizing what he was doing and saying. I do wish we would have had an inkling about his (one) relationship before Alex. This whole story was quite a learning experience for Galen. And that was enlightening to read.

But it was great to see their relationship bend and weave into a wonderful ending. I loved that Mr. Starrett was able to make me believe the whole story. I really cared about what was going to happen to both characters and that's not always true for me. Shane has done wonders with the stories he writes. He's gotten better and better with each story he writes. Definitely a 5-star read for me!

Black Light: Protocol - 4 Stars!

I have to admit while I’ve read every single one of the Black Light books I haven’t read all of Mr. Starrett’s backlist. Now, after reading Galin and Alex, I’m ready to go back and read the rest of his stories. I loved that Galin isn’t the Mr. Perfect dom and that Alex was firm in what she wanted/needed. Then Mia, I adore her. I do feel ‘High Protocol’ could have been a little more detailed but not confusing as it was. Then again I know what it means since I’ve been reading these types of stories for years. With each book we get now it seems almost bittersweet knowing that the series is coming to a close. But as they say, on to bigger and better things I hope 🤞🏻

Can Galen trust again?

Galen and Alex are both looking for the same kink and are introduced by a DM at black light. They hit it off, however Galen is always holding something back. This story has a much more real life feel to it than you typically read in romance. There are dinner conversations and the relationship progresses overtime. Something that is missed in D/s books is the sub standing up for themselves and being intelligent. In this story, Alex is both. I was pleasantly surprised with this because I often find that lacking in books. Another great installment in the black light series.

This is the first book I have read by this author and I really enjoyed it. I didn't know much about this dynamic before reading this story and I feel like it was presented in a way that informed and entertained at the same time. I really enjoyed Alex. She was able to enjoy her submissive side while not compromising who she is as a woman outside of that. Galen was wonderful and infuriating in equal measures. I think Alex really helped him to grow in his role. I wish there had been a little more Black Light in the story, but it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the book. I'll definitely be adding Shane Starrett to my TBR.

Alex an Galen are great characters and after Galen was able to put his trust issues aside, the relationship she was dreaming of was able to blossom. Alex was a non nonsense person, with a sweet personality and she knew from the start what she wanted and voiced what she was expecting and wanted from this relationship. Together they make quite a pair and Galen had his a&& chewed by Mia every time he did some wrong to Alex was funny and called for! I had no idea what high protocol was, and I was happy to have a glimpse of what is expected in this type of relationship. Shane you outdid yourself with this one! I volunteered to review this story.

Finding Consensus; Lovely Story!!

Garmen used to have a submissive who followed Protocol with him. He is about to give up finding another. Alex wants to follow Protocol, but she ends up with someone who wants a slave or is using this to do whatever he wants, permission or not.

Fortunately, Dungeon Monitor at Black Light Terry “Muscles” Robertson knows them both, and feels they might be the answer each other are looking for.

A delightful journey of challenges, intelligence, Princess Bride references, romance, and the importance of communication. Very enjoyable, and very well written.

Black Light Protocol

Well was there any doubt that this book would be as fantastic in the BL World as the rest of the wonderful books ? Not by me. Shane Starrett took us to a different place inside this world where we find out that even Doms can make bad choices and screw things up by not practicing the communication and honesty that this world professes. We were involved with this wonderful duo from the very beginning and all the way through to the end. I enjoyed this book as much as I have every other book in the series. Thank you for a job well done.

Another Emotional Read for the Black Light series…

Another great addition to the Black Light series that deals with the not so known part of the BDSM lifestyle of high Protocol which follows a particular etiquette of service between the Dom/sub or master/slave and I found this story between Galen and Alex to be well rewarding and engaging as past histories is imposed on new relationships…
This book had all the feels of an emotional read that it had me hooked to the last page but have come to expect this emotional tug from this author and loved the input from the other characters in this story.

Sensitive exploration of a relationship

All relationships depend on good communication, in kink and out. Alex is exploring high protocol with Galen. At first all is well until small cracks become bigger ones. Assumptions are made, secrets kept and old patterns and relationship ghosts creep into this new one. This is what makes Black Light books fantastic. Not just kink or sex. Total studies in human behavior.

BLack Light: Protool

Absolutely fell in love with these characters and supporting characters. I have read previous works by this author and his writing screams personal experience wrapped up in a wonderful story. It had me chuckling, it had me hot and most of all it whisped me away from life. I truly hope strong as steal Mia gets her own story as a beautiful sub to the right man.

This is the 33rd book in this BDSM club series, and this story focuses on Alex, a submissive who wants to explore high protocol, and Galen, a Dom looking for a submissive to match his love of high protocol. I loved the way Terry, one of Black Light’s dungeon monitors, set them up. Even when matches look perfect, it takes a lot of work. Their struggles felt very realistic. Lots of character growth, and great to visit with BL characters we’ve met previously.
