Baek Heena is one of Korea’s most recognized picture book artists. With a background in film animation, her unique visual style features handmade miniature figurines and environments painstakingly lighted and photographed. She has published thirteen picture books that are popular throughout Asia, a number of which have been translated.
The author won the 2020 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award. You can see all the marvellous illustrations here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEl12.... Wait! Don't despair because the video is in Korean, for you can read the text translated to English here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cp7O... (pity the reader didn't show the artwork decently).
The Internet is a glorious thing. You can read a book using two different videos.

Cloud Bread is a children's book by Baek Hee-Na. It won both the 3rd Changwon Children’s Literary Award and the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award. Baek was the first Korean writer to win an award for literature. This book was found searching K-book trends website of literature awards. I read this story for a course in Children's literature. The story is told in first-person narration of a kitten. Cloud bread is a story about two kittens (siblings) who collect a cloud to give to their mom which she makes into the traditional cloud bread. However, this cloud bread is magical and helps you to fly. In the middle of Mom cooking the cloud bread, Dad is late for work. the kittens eat cloud bread when it is finished baking and fly to catch up with Dad with whom they share their cloud bread with. This cloud bread works its magic helping Dad fly up to work on time. I believe there is symbolism between the cloud bread and an actual cloud. The special Korean treat is light and soft, just as a real cloud from the sky. This symbolism created an imaginative picture of cats and kittens flowing as they enjoy a piece of the bread. The illustrations were a bit different and unique. I recommend this as a book for ages 5-9. It would be a great read to help children explore the world of imagination and possibilities.
This is a great book, with adorable art and a cute story (both of which are 백희나's specialty). The entire story is a play on the name "cloud bread," which is an actual food irl, but in the story it's bread made of clouds.
The grammar and vocabulary are pretty accessible even for high beginners, so for intermediate readers it was pretty easy.
I remember reading the picture book growing up, and later seeing the animated show. This story taught me how to love such distinct visual styles and made me want to eat clouds even more than I already did.
Molt guay llegir-lo a classe, i molt xulo visualment. :')
'Cloud Bread' - the title intrigued me. Didn't help that my tummy was rumbling while hunting for books at our local library's chinese juvenile section, a big contributing factor to why I lifted this off the shelves as I did not care for the book's cover design (not exactly my favourite style). Upon opening it, realized I almost passed up a really cute book, further etching the lesson 'do not judge a book by its cover' into my head. The story is an easy read - a tale of two brothers' rainy day adventure and what traversed following their discovery of a piece of cloud snagged on a tree branch. It resonated well with me as I often went on adventures with a younger sister close in age. However my 4yo couldn't fathom how you could capture a cloud, bake it into a bread, let alone 'float' and 'fly' after digesting it. (Maybe we should stick to DK Science books, I regret her inability to enjoy a story for what it is. I, however enjoyed the encounter with this book)
