She wakes suddenly. Dawn is still hours away, but through the window of her log cabin in the woods, something moves in the distance. A lone figure in the forest. Her blood runs cold as the shadow begins to walk slowly toward her…

It’s Halloween in Black Rock Falls and Sheriff Jenna Alton and her deputy David Kane are called to a small lodge on the outskirts of town. Jenna is devastated to find the lifeless body of Willow Smith, a military widow whose husband went missing in action and has been presumed dead for years. Her breath catches in her throat when she notices the heart-shaped purple medal on Willow’s pale chest. Was Willow clinging to it when she died, or was it placed there after she took her last breath?

Desperately chasing down every lead, Jenna hears that Willow had been receiving silent phone calls in the dead of night. Witnesses say Willow thought her missing husband was trying to make contact. Wishful thinking of a lonely wife consumed with grief, or a heartless killer hoping to terrify her?

Days later, another woman’s body is found at the bottom of a perilous ravine. Jenna’s worst fear is confirmed the moment she spots a purple medal: a dangerous serial killer is preying on the wives of soldiers from the same platoon, and if she doesn’t act fast, more lives will be at risk.

The key lies in discovering what happened to the missing soldiers, and whether any of them made it back alive. But, separated from her team in a secluded forest, Jenna hears a branch snap behind her. She is not alone. Will she be the next victim of a twisted trained soldier on the loose? And how many more grieving widows will have their lives snatched before he’s caught?

Chase Her Shadow (Detectives Kane and Alton Book 17) review.(Thriller)

D. K. Hood writes fantastic thrillers without a doubt. Her latest book is no exception. Chase Her Shadow is book #17 in the Detectives Kane and Alton series. Although I have read most of these books, they can easily be enjoyed as stand-alones.

Synopsis:
Halloween is just a few days away in Black Rock Falls. Deputy David Kane and Sheriff Jenna Alton are called to a small lodge outside of town. While there they discover the dead body of Willow Smith. Several years ago, Willow's husband was declared missing in action and is presumed dead. Jenna and Alton are determined to get to the bottom of this strange death. Did Willow commit suicide? Was she murdered?

Chase Her Shadow is a bit different from the other books in the series. The main characters Kane and Alton are always a thrill to revisit. The books are quick intriguing reads that can be finished in a day.

Chase Her Shadow is available on December 9th.

Halloween in Black Rock Falls…what could go wrong 😅

This is one creepy and scary story, set in spooky season in serial killer central. The setting is just perfect, a killer, targeting the wives of missing soldiers. It is cold, the leaves are changing, and the town is preparing for the Halloween Ball. Kane and Wolfe have to use everything they know from their time in the service to stop this killer.

Once again, a page turner that will keep you on the edge of your seats. Plenty of suspects, red herrings and danger. That is why we love this series. Reading this on Halloween night while the wind and rain were raging outside made for an intense reading experience.

Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for my advanced copy of this book to read. Published December 9th

D.K. Hood has the magic to lure readers in with a strong series and evolving plot lines. I have been on a hardcore binge to read these novels and have barely taken time to breathe. Another novel set close to Hallowe’en, Hood weaves a tale about a woman whose husband’s military team disappeared and were presumed dead. When his ghost appears to her, many think it is her grief taking over. After she is found murdered, Sheriff Jenna Alton must investigate. More bodies deepen the mystery about this military unit and how a killer has been using this to fuel an apparent vendetta. Hood proves sensational once more!

She wakes all of a sudden with the sense that he is back, or at least his presence. It is still the dead of night, but she senses something eerie, unlike the way things felt before. Someone is peering at her and there is no time to wait. Her life is on borrowed time….

With Halloween back in Black Rock Falls, the celebrations are in full swing. While Sheriff Jenna Alton and her deputy David Kane want to take part in the festivities, they must attend a lodge outside town, when a frantic call comes into the office. Willow Smith’s body awaits them, signs of being murdered. Willow is a military widow with a husband whose entire military unit went missing years ago. All are presumed dead, but no one can confirm this. Sheriff Alton discovers a distinct purple medal in Willow’s hand, though it is not clear if this was clutched during the incident or left there as a calling card.

As Alton and Kane begin trying to piece the crime together, it becomes apparent that Willow was suffering quite a bit. She had been telling people that she saw her husband’s ghost and communicated with him. This explained the silent calls that she received in the dead of night. Many felt this was her grief overtaking Willow’s daily life, but it could be a key piece of evidence for the investigation.

Another body appears in a ravine, adding concern to the case. Another purple medal is lodged in the victim’s hand. The killer appears to be using this as a sign and this is another wife of the missing unit. Could it be a sign that someone has a vendetta against the unit or knows where they went?

It all boils down to the missing soldiers, a mystery in and of itself. Did they make it back alive or are they somewhere on the field of battle? While probing the rural surroundings, Sheriff Alton finds herself isolated from others. She hears a sound and has a tingling up her spine. Has the killer locked her in their sights? Hood keeps the action high and the suspense like no other book in the series!

D.K. Hood has made waves with this series, accentuating key elements necessary for a collection of strong thriller novels. Her narrative provides a solid foundation for the rest of the story’s success, keeping series fans enthralled as they try to decipher all the clues provided. Wholesome in its small-town nature, the story is far from a cozy piece, with murder at the core of each story. This novel was no exception, tapping into a military flavouring that highlights the past life Dave Kane led. Hood weaves a mystery with police procedural pillars to erect a fabulous read for the attentive reader.

Character development has never waned in this series, as both protagonists have a plethora sitting in their pasts. Hood not only focuses her attention on them and trying to unravel the secrets they had before arriving in Black Rock Falls, but also peppers the story with secondary characters who have lives of their own. Hood has never kept the reader out of the loop, though she does provide breadcrumbs for all to wonder more about those who prop up the larger and more complex characters. This story does offers some military flavouring and hints at the past Dave Kane had in Special Forces, which only adds to the depth of intrigue found within its pages.

The series relies on strong plot points to keep the mystery moving and the police procedural nature of the story front and centre. Hood is able to provide all the needed elements without becoming repetitive, even seventeen novels into the series. I marvel at the detail she provides and how she can transform the apparently sleepy town of Black Rock Falls, Montana into what has been referred to as ‘serial killer central’. I am eager to plunge deeper into the series and see where things are headed, as Hood has never disappointed.

Kudos, Madam Hood, for keeping things on pace towards further greatness.

Detectives Kane and Alton #17

It's Halloween in Black Rock Falls and Sherrif Jenna Alton and her Deputy Davis Kane have been called to a small lodge on the outskirts of town. Jenna is devastated to find the body of Willow Smith, a military widow whose husband went missing in action and has been presumed dead for years. Her breath catches in her throat when she notices a heart=shaped purple medal on Willow's pale chest. Desperately chasing down every lead, Jenna learns that Willow had been receiving silent phone calls in the dead of night. Witnesses say Willow thought her missing husband was trying to male contact.

Jenna and Dave are investigating the murders of the wives of SEAL team members who were MIA whilst on active duty. Set around Halloween makes this story even more creepy. Whoever is killing these women are making it look like suicide. Someone is preying on these grieving women. As always, this is another well written and great addition to the series. I love all the main characters in this book. Jo Wells and Ty Carter have their parts to play, although not so much Ty in this edition. I love visiting serial killer central, and Halloween was the perfect setting.

I would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookouture and the author #DKHood for my ARC of #ChaseHerShadow in exchange for an honest review.

Jenna and Dave are back in this 17th installment.
It’s Halloween time in Black Rock Falls and soldiers widows are being knocked off with their husbands Purple Hearts. Seven years ago on Halloween a platoon of soldiers went MIA presumably dead. Widows Willow, Christy and Evelyn are hearing and seeing their husbands or so they think.
This was a spooky read full of creepy houses in isolated woods. I couldn’t hardly put it down. Very suspenseful. The author has many great books in this series.
Thanks NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC that will be released December 8!

D.K. Hood is firing on all cylinders with her new creepy, spooky book!
Welcome back to Serial Killer Central! This is book #17 and the series is still going strong. As the town is preparing for their annual Halloween Ball there is military wives living deep in the woods outside of town that are being murdered.

When the wife of a missing soldier is found dead many folks decide that it was a suicide. Sheriff Jenna Alton, and her husband Deputy Dave Kane begin to investigate and it leads them to discovering the wife of a second missing soldier from the same military team dead. The disappearance of the soldiers is classified and information can’t be revealed so it makes their investigation even harder to figure out. The next soon-to-be victim comes to the police station frightened and begging for help. She tells them that someone is watching her out in the woods and calling her phone saying it is her husband. This is the big break that the team needed and now they feel that they can design a plan catch the murderer. Who is doing this and why is he/she killing the women?

This book was really good! High winds, creaking floors, deep dark woods, telephones ringing, and someone saying "Let me in" makes for a quick gotta read one more chapter book!
Keep the lights on folks!
Many thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for my advanced copy of this book to read. Coming December 9th. Don't miss it!

Cancel everything and tuck into the latest Kane and Alton book. Another fantastic five star read that had me sat on the edge of my seat, constantly holding my breath and tapping my kindle like a demented wood pecker. I devoured this book in one sitting and only came up for breath when I had finished the last page. Chilling, gripping and so much more. Another in this gripping and very addictive series. This is another MUST READ from one of my favourite authors.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.

What a twisty lead up the garden path this was, on more than one occasion! I had thought on one of the side plots that the author was going to announce some big news, but alas it wasn’t to be. The big reveal with whom was behind everything, I thought the author was actually going to go there and do something left field, but to my relief, it wasn’t – and boy was I relieved!

I do love being back with Kane and Alton and this was a tough case and quite a terrifying one in some respects. I love the discussions of ghosts and Atohi’s thoughts behind some mythology with Black Rock Falls. I also loved how grounded Kane was, this was to ensure Jenna…and us didn’t get too caught up in the ghost and ghouls and that we stay grounded.

I blitzed this book in a day, with a mixture of reading and audiobook. I mean I love Patricia Rodriguez so I HAD to get the audiobook. She really does bring the characters and fear alive!

I seriously had no clue how this would play out and I had no idea who would be behind the grand reveal. I was stumped. Well apart from the initial inclination as to who it might be, my jaw dropped! I was sitting there saying no no no as I didn’t want it to be true!! The killer was sadistic, but I am still not 100% sure why they did what they did, part revenge, part some loose wiring in the brain, 100% cold and chilling! I wouldn’t want to be near that person – *shiver* But I think I will re-read the last few chapters to get my understanding of the whys!

It is always enjoyable to be back with the team, and Rowley I feel your frustration too! I hope we get to see more of him, do you think if I mention it in every one of my reviews it might happen 😉

Chase Her Shadow is the seventeenth book in the police procedural series featuring Detectives David Kane and Jenna Alton. I picked up this series with Whisper in the Night (book 6) and I also thoroughly enjoyed books seven through to sixteen.

So I'm back in Black Rock Falls, Montana, with Sheriff Jenna Alton who makes a very amenable and winsome detective. Her husband, and deputy, David Kane is a former Special Forces marksman with exceptional profiling skills. In this instalment, a military widow is dead in the woods.

This was fast-paced, well-balanced, spooky, gritty and tense. It had me glued to the pages and I didn't want to put it down as I was desperate to know the outcome of the story. You could read Chase Her Shadow as a standalone... but you'll be missing out so much if you don't read some of the other instalments as well. I will be seeking out the first five instalments of this masterful series when I get the chance. A brilliant, compelling, pulse-pounding and very highly recommended crime-thriller.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Bookouture via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

Book 17 in the fantastic Kane and Alton series and it's spooktacular!

Halloween. Black Rock Falls. Serial Killer Central. What could possibly go wrong?

When Jenna and Dave are called out to an apparent suicide it seems an open and shut case. The body is that of a young widow who has been increasingly distressed lately. She has reported late night calls and even seeing her husband around her isolated property.

But we all know nothing is ever that straight forward in these books!

What follows is a dark, spooky plot that keeps your heart racing. Reading it on Halloween really added to the creepy atmosphere. I loved it and was barely able to put it down.

A cracking 5 star read that will have you hooked start to finish

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'Chase Her Shadow' by DK Hood.

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for DK Hood, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous

Publication date 9th December 2022.

This is the seventh book I have read by this author. It is also the seventeenth book in the 'Detective Kane and Alton' series but can be read as a standalone. I have previously read 'Cross My Heart' (book 12 in the series), 'Fallen Angel' (book 13 in the series), 'Don't Look Back (book 13.5 in the series), ' Pray For Mercy '(book 14 in the series), 'Kiss Her Goodnight' (book 15 in the series) and 'Her Bleeding Heart' (book 16 in the series) and I would highly recommend them all.

I was originally drawn to this book by its beautiful eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that this book is 'Perfect for fans of Lisa Regan, Melinda Leigh and Kendra Elliot, Chase Her Shadow is a truly unputdownable crime thriller from USA Today bestselling author D.K. Hood. Prepare to be hooked!' I am a huge fan of all three of those authors so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I am also a huge fan of DK Hood and if this is half as good as 'Cross My Heart', 'Don't Look Back', 'Pray For Mercy', 'Fallen Angel', 'Kiss Her Goodnight' and 'Her Bleeding Heart' it is sure to be a page turning read. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of a prologue, 39 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is set in Montana, USA 🇺🇸.

This book is written in a mix of third and first person perspective and the protagonists are Sheriff Jenna Alton, Detective David Kane and the killer. The benefits of books written in first person perspective are as long as they are well written it makes you feel that you are being spoken to by the protagonist and it can create more of a bond between yourselves and them. If there are several protagonists you also get to see more of what is going on. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything. To have the benefit of both first and third person perspective ensures you don't miss out on anything.

OMG!!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVED THIS BOOK and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS SERIES!!! D.K HOOD you just keep getting better and better!!!

This book is fantastically written and had me hooked from the first page until the last. DK Hood way of writing is perfectly evocative and she has such a creative imagination!! The descriptions were so vivid and realistic I felt myself feeling the cold and damp and reaching for a blanket to warm me up. This has got to be one of the best storylines I have ever read!!!! Just when you've read the best book in this series and it can't get any better BANG DK Hood does it again!! OMG the suspense, especially when I thought I knew who the killer left me with my heart in my throat and my pulse racing!! I can't say much more apart from I was thinking along the same lines as Jo and I'm so relieved we were both wrong!!! Needless to say I absolutely LOVED the storyline. This book is absolutely perfect for any crime lovers as you are literally reading about crime, twists and murder!!! It just does not get better than that!!! Just seriously, I cannot say how brilliant all this book was!!! The storyline is packed with tension, suspense, murder, tension and filled with twists and turns. I was absolutely shocked when everything was revealed and was not expecting it at all!!! I genuinely thought for once I had actually worked out who it was in this amazing series but YET AGAIN DK Hood proves me wrong!! A HUGE congratulations to D.K Hood, it is getting harder and harder to shock me but you did it well!!! . D.K Hood has obviously done her research on police procedurals which is yet another bonus as I've read many crime novels where the authors make massive mistakes due to not doing enough research. I am ABSOLUTELY LANDED that Jenna and Kane finally got married previously but as with everything in Jenna and Kane's life's nothing can go off without a hitch and my heart absolutely went out to them after a certain event and now I have my fingers crossed they'll get the family they want so bad. Well, I say that but at the same time I'd be worried about how much a baby would change Jenna and how she works so maybe not. I'll just have to see just like you will have to pick up this book to find out what made my heart go to my throat and had my pulse racing! This is an absolutely unputdownable page turner and I cannot wait to read the previous and future books in what is promising to be an addictive series.

Although this is the seventeenth book in the series I would have had absolutely no problems reading it without the others. Any details or events that have previously happened are mentioned in just the right amount of detail to let a new reader know what has happened and yet not too much to bore a previous reader.

I absolutely LOVED meeting the characters again and they are all realistic and I became completely invested in them. I love that Jenna is such a strong female lead that has history and has been through so much but doesn't cower and stands strong. I have  enjoyed watching her relationship with Kane has evolved  and I am looking forward to going back to how they met and moving forward to see where it goes especially in regards to potentially starting a family. Kane is another fantastic character that I became invested in and I adore how protective of Jenna he is. The team dynamics worked well and I also enjoyed getting to know more about Rio, Wolfe and Rowley and I look forward to meeting them all again. I must say my favourite had to be Duke though!!!! What an absolutely fantastic addition, I just love it when pets play such large parts in books. Regardless of whether you love or hate any of the characters they all work perfectly to make this storyline an absolutely addictive, explosive page turner!!! The majority of the characters have become like friends to me and I'm always sad to say goodbye never knowing when I'll "see" them again so I really hope the next book is being written as I speak. Hint hunt 😉 DK Hood!!!

Congratulations D.K Hood on what promises to be another huge success!!! Very rarely an authors books get better but you have certainly mastered it!!! I cannot wait to get stuck into more of your books and this is exactly why you are one my favourite crime authors!!! Here's to your next guaranteed success 🥂

This book is definitely in my top 5 and considering I've read 1000's this is a HUGE achievement!!! This series is also in my top 3 ♥

Do not start this until you have cleared yours schedules as you will not be able to put it down!!

Overall an absolutely addictive, heart racing and unputdownable crime thriller that will keep you up all night.

Genres covered in this novel include Crime Thriller, Psychological Thriller, Police Procedural, Psychological Fiction, Suspense, Mystery, Thriller, Noir Fiction and Crime Fiction amongst others.

I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of Lisa Regan, Melinda Leigh, Angela Marsons, Rita Herron, Carol Wyer, Kendra Elliot and anyone looking for a gripping page turner .

303 pages.

This book is just £2.99 to purchase on kindle and £7.99 in paperback via Amazon at time of review which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

Rated 5 /5 (I LOVED it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.

Well, it's Halloween in Black Rock Falls, and we all know what that means, don't we boys and girls.... Serial Killer Central has come to life, decorated with ghouls, ghosts, vampires, witches, werewolves, skeletons, spiders and webs, and pumpkins by the truckload; and of course, murder is in the air, too.
Welcome to the 17th book in the Detectives Kane and Alton series, and thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author (the author most of all) for the opportunity to read and review ahead of publication. It's always a treat and I feel blessed to be able to do so. So, fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night.
Their husbands were MIA (Missing In Action) in Afghanistan, together as a unit, and yet the wives have started receiving phone calls, always at midnight and at Halloween, telling them that their long lost loves have returned and want to reunite. But the reunion is not what they expected!
Jenna Alton and Dave Kane are expecting Halloween to be the usual around Black Rock Falls, with a side order of mayhem, but when they're called to not one but two suspected suicides, it becomes abundantly clear that things are not what they appear to be. Why would these women wait so long to end it all, when they seem to have been leading, mostly, normal lives and getting on with things?
The first woman was leaving on vacation the next day, the second had left the lights on and it appeared as though she was just out for a walk. So - not suicide, but murder.
Too many details would give the plot away, and I wouldn't want to do that, so I'm going to concentrate on the book itself. First of all, the atmosphere is decidedly creepy, as befits a Halloween tale; some of the location names are truly weird (as befitting Serial Killer Central); places like Creeping Vine Trail and Twisted Tree Ridge. Second, there is much more investigation as opposed to multiple murders and taunting killers. I enjoyed getting more glimpses into how Jenna, Dave, Shane, Rio, Jo, etc. actually investigate rather than just hunt and capture.
Now, this killer is special and one of the more twisted they've ever encountered - and that makes this book one of the special ones.
With developing personalities, and an expanding cast of characters, I cannot wait to see where Ms. Hood takes us next.
Can be read as a standalone, but you only really get the whole picture if you jump in and read the entire series.
Highly recommended. I'd give it 10 Stars if I could.

HOLY CRAP! Scary book! Wives of missing soldiers are being killed but made to look like suicide. Keep the lights on when you read this book. Jenna and Dave and the rest of the team solve the mystery. As usual I did not guess who the killer was. Many thanks to NetGalley, Bookoutre and the Author for allowing me to read and review this book.

Chase her shadow book 17 in the Kane and Alton series!

I really enjoyed this installment and apologie for the extremely late review.
When a miltory widow is found dead in the forest the sherifs department are on the case, so many unanswered questioned who would want Willow dead? What had she done? Is it to do with her? So when another miltory wife is found dead, they think they have the connection strange thing is she's being hearing her dead husband speak to her. That begs the questions is he really dead or is someone trying to make her think he was alive?

I loved this installment one of my favourite so far! I loved the fact that Dave had to use his top secret clearance to find out more about these dead soilders and reading them piece it altogether. Plus it reminds us how important Wolf truly is!
It was great as well to have Jp and Carter be back on the team and let's just say Carter is a bit of a ghost during this book the question is what is he actually up to.

The whole gang is just amazing and Halloween in Blackrock Falls is a time I definately do not want to be there. There is always something going on and I must admit the Halloween installments are my favourite in the series.

Jenna and Kane are literally the nest crime fictional duo I have had the good fortune to read and their constant search for the killer had me hooked start to finish. The description by D.K Hood made me feel like I was actually there when evweyrhinf was going down.

To say more would spoil this book and if you're like me and read the first 16, 17 will jot disappoint easy peas 5 stars 🌟

Thank you to D.K Hood, netgalley and bookouture for rhe arc of chase her shadow.

Sheriff Jenna Alton and Detective Kane are some of my favourite pair of investigators lately. This is book number 17 and while I haven’t read them all, the last ones got me so invested in their stories that I can’t miss any opportunity to read about them anymore.
Each story bring on a very interesting plot and one that has me gripped throughout the book. It’s so good that I couldn’t put it down until I found out what’s going on and who is that shadow. Nevertheless, the pace keeps getting better and better, there are a few unexpected twists and some intriguing characters.
Why would anyone want to live alone, secluded from any human contact? Is there something that happened in the past and they want to lay low or it’s just a way of getting away with murder? Those were my questions from the beginning. And I did got my answers by the end, and more.
The addition of a group of military soldiers that were killed in Afghanistan really had me on the edge because anything could happen then.
This story was scary and great at the same time. The investigation had a few moments when I feared for the main character’s life and then, the small puzzles that are added made for an even more intriguing story.

Looking forward to seeing where the author takes us next with this favourite duo.

Very grateful to the publisher for my review copy through NetGalley and my place in the blog tour.

Halloween and Black Rock Falls seem made for each other; the town is decorated, there are special events being held, and the wind echoing through the surrounding forests adds to the spooky atmosphere. When the body of the widow of a military veteran is found in her isolated home the celebrations are put on hold for Sheriff Jenna Alton and her team as they examine the unexplained death.

Looking closer at the circumstances surrounding the death it soon seems more than coincidental that it happened just before Halloween. Ghostly sightings and contact from beyond the grave are unnerving to those connected to the victim and her late husband but when a second body is discovered, although she knows it's unlikely, Jenna has to consider every possibility.

In book 17 of this brilliant series the spooky monitor is set to high with plenty of suspects, familiar protagonists, and a location known as serial killer central, added to the Halloween holiday. This is the ideal scenario for an atmospheric murder mystery and D K Hood has the heart racing from the start.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. This is an excellent series and once again the standard is incredibly high. Easy to recommend.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy of this book.

First off I can’t believe this is book 17 in this series. It is probably my favourite and I can’t get enough!

When the wife of a soldier MIA is found dead, ME Wolfe suspects it is not the suicide that it appears to be. Sheriff Jenna Alton and deputy Dave Kane begin to investigate. I’m their findings lead to them discovering the wife of a second MIA soldier from the same team dead. Both have been murdered.
The disappearance of the soldiers is classified and FBI agent Carter can’t reveal any information.

When a potential victim comes forward the team puts a plan into place to catch the murderer, but is he one of their own?

This book was so good. All of the talk of mist and wind etc have it a really spooky effect, perfect for its Halloween setting.

I love Dave and Jenna’s relationship and that of their team. The characters have been written so well that I am invested in them!

My only issue with this book is that it was too good! I couldn’t put it down and have finished it already. Cannot wait for the next one! 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and a huge recommendation to everybody to read it!

Another brilliant crime thriller from DK Hood.
It’s great to be back in Black Rock Falls and it’s Halloween so this one is a bit creepy.
A woman is found dead by her friend and at first it looks like suicide, but Wolfe soon determines that she has been murdered.
She was due to go on holiday the next day to put the anniversary of her husband’s death out of her mind and her friend knows she did not kill herself.
Another woman is soon found dead and is linked to the first victim as her husband was in the same team sent to Afghanistan, but none of the men came home.
Kane and Jenna start the hunt for someone with a military background and know it will be hard to find the killer.
This is a gripping crime thriller with some creepy moments in old secluded houses.
I love this series and can’t wait to read the next book.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

Halloween in Black Rock Falls, could anything be creepier? There is a serial killer in town. This one is going for a very special kind of victims. Naturally the serial killer has many screws loose, and the logic behind the killings is pure insanity.

Another great add to this fabulous series! I love how I have gotten attached to the characters, and most importantly the dog, in this book. The characters are so vivid, and they all have quite heavy backgrounds, yet they are very much down to earth - well, everyone except the serial killer.

It's a week before Halloween in Black Rock Falls and the town that's known as serial killer central is bracing its selves. Hopefully for a Halloween that doesn't include another killer on the loose.

However, when town ME Shane Wolfe turns up unexpectedly at the house of Sheriff Jenna Alton and her husband Deputy Dave Kane. They fear the worst. As Wolfe has a strange story to tell involving the suspicious death of a woman. Whose own husband a Marine disappeared with his entire team at Halloween in Afghanistan seven years ago.

And when her death is ruled as murder and another woman dies. Whose husband was also in Afghanistan. Kane and Alton realise something very strange is going on; and with the military unable to provide answers about the missing marines the team are left to find them themselves.

Yet, how can a team MIA in Afghanistan be connected to a series of murders in Black Rock Falls? And is it just Halloween that has their loved ones seeing and hearing ghosts?

And with twists galore and a killer I didn't see coming. This was a hauntingly gripping read. That kept me reading late into the night and had me on the edge of my seat.

I would happily recommend Chase Her Shadow and the Detectives Kane and Alton series to all.

I normally enjoy a Kane and Alton book, but this one had a weird undertone—low-key chauvinistic macho hero. It felt like Dave was dismissive of Jenna throughout the whole book, constantly contradicting and minimizing everything she was saying. It was really irritating. Then at one point, he told Jo to “calm down.” Yeah, because telling a woman to calm down is usually super effective [insert eye roll].

There was also the inconsistency of Evelyn’s parents. She called them and spoke to her father, but a few pages later, someone said that they died while her husband was away on tour, and she inherited the house from them. But then she mentioned going to stay with them later in the book.

Then there was the matter of the phrase “get at it.” If I never have to read the phrase “get at it” again, it still might be too soon. It could have been a drinking game, it was repeated so many times.

The book was fine, but the ending seemed a little forced, and the overall tone from Dave throughout the book missed the mark for me. I like these books because they’re an easy read, but this one was just annoying.

DK did not disappoint with her latest book in this series. It was SPOOKY and had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. As a die hard fan, it still just leaves me with so many questions and of course, wanting more!

Can you say creepy? Wow! I am always ready for a new Kane and Alton book. I love this series and all of the characters in the series. They have caught so many serial killers in Black Rock Falls in recent history that they pegged the town "serial killer central". The mood is spooky and eerie as it is Halloween in Black Rock Falls, and women are dying after being mentally tortured for days by someone claiming to be their dead husband. At first it appears that Willow (the widow of a soldier who was killed in action or is assumed dead) has died by her own hand, However, if you have read any of the Kane and Alton series, you know that Wolf will not settle for cause of death as it "appears". He quickly determines that she was, in fact, murdered. The action and suspense really amp up after this scene as Jenna and Kane quickly realize there is a lot more to the story. Jenna wants to believe in the spooky stories, but Kane keeps her on solid ground and assures her that the only "ghost" they need to worry about is a live one who is killing women for pleasure.

The characters in this book and this entire series are beyond awesome. They are highly intelligent, brave, well-trained and fearless. They are not your run of the mill small town police force. Their relationship with each other plays out well in each story. I have read so many of these books that I feel as if I actually know them personally.

D.K. Hood is very good at leading you down one pathway and then switching gears. The shock factor is a specialty for this author. The timing of this book being set at Halloween makes the freak factor and scare factor even more prominent in your mind. After all what is more scary than a mad man on the loose who is a true predator? I stayed up late into the night to finish this one because I had to solve the mystery even though I was a little freaked out reading this mystery in the late evening hours! I just could not put it down.

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I can't believe that we're at #17 in the Detectives Kane and Alton series! Now I've been reading these from the very first #Don'tTellASoul, After every new instalment of life in serial killer central Black Rock Falls, Montana I'm champing at the bit for the next one, Although I'm not sure why anyone with half a brain would actually want to live there,

Life for Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane is pretty darned good right now but it's back to business for them when a case comes in, Its Halloween in Black Rock Falls, a time for remembering the dead and you can bet your bottom dollar that death of a different kind will be paying a visit. As with all celebratory dates the townsfolk have gone all out with the requisite cobwebs, ghost, vampires and all manner of scary apparitions.

Not to give too much of the plot away there's a small circle of women being tormented by phone calls apparently from their missing husbands, The women are the widows of servicemen from the same unit, they were shot dead, supposedly shot by the enemy during a tour of duty, When the first body was discovered it was presented as a suicide but when another victim turns up the guys quickly realise that it's something far more sinister, it's murder but why wait so long?

What I love about this series is that it feels as if you're catching up with old friends, of where they are in life, seeing just how well they're doing. We have the dastardly duo Jenna and Dave alongside their regular cohorts and when they need that extra bit of backup they have Jo Wells and Ty Carter from the FBI to call upon. For the most part they seem to be in pretty decent shape, apart from Ty that is, he seems to need some downtime, to be MIA, although he picked his m

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Chase Her Shadow, the seventeenth novel to feature Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane of Black Rock Falls, Montana.

Willow Smith is dead, found lying peacefully in her bed with her husband’s purple heart pinned to her chest. Suicide or murder? It is seven years since her husband was reported MIA, believed dead, in Afghanistan, so was her pain too much? Medical Examiner Shane Wolfe thinks murder and the death of another widow from the same incident a couple of days later confirms it.

I thoroughly enjoyed Chase Her Shadow, which is a tense, exciting read with added spookiness as it is set at Halloween and the widows both lived in remote wooded areas. The basic premise of the novel is fairly standard for the series, another serial killer roaming Serial Killer Central as Black Rock Falls has become known, but this one feels very different. I think it’s because there is no anger or savagery and, somehow, that makes it more chilling. Given the military connection you could say that he’s mission orientated, although quite what that mission is is unclear until the denouement.

I have very little imagination so I didn’t really gel with Jenna’s nerves and jumpiness, in fact I found it slightly annoying and out of character, but I think it is well done and that it will unnerve many readers. That aside, I was glued to the pages as it’s one event after another and there’s precious little time to breathe right up to the end. The final confrontation scene may not be as violent or heart stopping as some in the series, but it still packs a punch in a more psychological way. It’s quite disturbing.

Chase her Shadow is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.

If you read my reviews, you know how I feel about this author. She is my queen of creepiness and she delivered big time!

I started reading this book at night and not just any night. It was just before Halloween and it’s Halloween in Black Rock Falls too. The author scared me out of my skin. I was really thinking hard about putting the book away and continue reading the next day.

It’s ficion! I hear you call. And yes, I know it is. Ghosts don’t exist! I hear someone else say. Well, I am not really convinced they don’t actually. Anyway, the way the author described the scenes, had me rattled. I felt my muscles cramp, my nerve endings prickle, my heart rate went up… That’s how real it all felt for me.

Jenna is a down to earth person, but ghosts are not her favorite thing either. She believes in them too and Dave finds it hilarious teasing her with that.

Dave is a man of flesh and blood, but he has the ability to move like a ghost due to his military background. It’ seems like he is not the only one. Dave though uses his skills to help people and put killers behind bars. Killers use this knowledge for other purposes…

The killer may act like a ghost, but who are you going to call? Right, Jenna and Dave. 😉

I read this book in the blink of an eye. That’s how it sucked me in. Now it’s time to start counting the days again. 5 stars for this excellent story.

Thank you

It’s Halloween in Black Rock Falls and Sheriff Jenna Alton and her deputy David Kane are called to a small lodge on the outskirts of town. Jenna is devastated to find the lifeless body of Willow Smith, a military widow whose husband went missing in action and has been presumed dead for years. Her breath catches in her throat when she notices the heart-shaped purple medal on Willow’s pale chest.
Desperately chasing down every lead, Jenna hears that Willow had been receiving silent phone calls in the dead of night. Witnesses say Willow thought her missing husband was trying to make contact. The key lies in discovering what happened to the missing soldiers, and whether any of them made it back alive
The seventeenth book in this fantastic series, it could easily be read on its own. Another well written edge of the seat read which I devoured in two sittings & finished it well into the night. The characters are well portrayed & I loved Jenna & Dave. A spooky read, after all it’s set at Halloween, with red herrings, twists & turns before the denouement. Another highly recommended book in the series
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
