When a bully demands the dessert from Bo's friend at lunch, Bo stands up to him and becomes the new target for the bully. He has all weekend to figure out what he can do on Monday, but by Sunday he is so nervous that he asks for advice from the customers at his grandfather's barbershop. When his grandfather tells him about John Lewis, the famous civil rights activist, Bo knows exactly what to do!
This early chapter book is part of a new series from Lerner called Bo at the Buzz and would be readable and appeal to children in grades 2-4. It is physically formatted for library uses with hard covers and sturdy binding to withstand the rigors of multiple borrowers in a school library year or public library setting.
An introduction by the series executive editor and librarian Cicely Lewis explains that this series was developed to increase books with diverse characters to reflect children's lives that may not have books written about their experiences. The title offers a short and easily readable story that would be great in any library collection. Its content format has about two short paragraphs per page turn with full color illustrations to bring the story to life for the newly emergent reader.
Bo's experience with bullying at school is universal theme that all children will understand, and the calm resolution is a hopeful approach to conflict resolution. I would recommend this book for purchase by any elementary school or public library.
