Detective Kay Sharp #5

Missing Girl at Frozen Falls

Rate this book
She lay in the frosted grass behind Frozen Falls. Her eyes were wide open, and the wind blew her hair, ash-blond locks reflecting the blue sky. Her face, beautiful even in death, was pale, as if the bitter cold from the mountain had drained the color from her cheeks.

On a crisp autumn day in the small town of Mount Chester, Detective Kay Sharp comes face-to-face with the past she has spent the last decade running from. Her ex-husband, Brian, has been accused of murder.

Seeing Brian brings a flood of painful memories—he betrayed her in the worst possible way. Yet despite her heartbreak, Kay is willing to put her career on the line to prove his innocence.

Brian is accused of killing Kay’s former best friend, Rachel—the woman he cheated on Kay with, getting her pregnant. The blood drains from Kay’s face; she received a voicemail from Rachel two days ago. “I hope you’ll forgive me,” she’d said, her voice fraught with tears. “I know I have no right, but I need you.” Kay’s stomach plummets. By the time she called back, Rachel was already dead. Could Brian really be the murderer?

Kay faces pressure from her crime team, who don’t want her working on an investigation so close to home. But she’s willing to risk everything—she vows to get justice for Rachel.

When Kay visit’s Rachel’s mother, she uncovers a heart-stopping discovery that makes the case even more critical: Rachel’s eight-year-old daughter, Holly, is missing. Could the little girl still be alive?

Up against the most complex—and most personal—case of her career, can she save precious Holly before it’s too late? And will Kay’s determination to find out the truth lead to justice—or be her undoing?

Detective Kay Sharps ex husband Brian Hanlin is accused of murdering his fiancee Rachel, Kay’s ex best friend. Rachel’s eight year old daughter is also missing. Kay investigates this case while her partner Elliot investigates the case of a missing jogger. Plenty of action and suspense that keeps the pages turning. This is the Fifth book in the Kay Sharp series and will be released Nov. 28th. Thanks NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC!

T: Missing Child/damsel in distress, small town secrets, innocent accused/framed husband
TW: Murder and death, missing child, violence, infidelity, emotional distress, criminal activity, mentions of gangs and prostitution, manipulation and lies

Huge Twist!!!

Wow! What a huge twist this book had! I never saw it coming and it was totally shocking!! The identity of the killer I mean... I guess it just shows you can never know about some people. Some people are just excellent liars and you end up believing them and its all lies!

This book was a bit different than the previous books. It's the first one that is not about a serial killer. Instead it follows two different murder cases, cases that are set far apart in distance too , one being way over in San Francisco. I think this did give the book a different feel. Because Kay is out of her own jurisdiction trying to solve a case and track down a missing girl.

This seems to be the last book in the series? Will there be more??

I do think for some unknown reason I do prefer Kay working in her own small town. But I guess after awhile it seems kind of weird that the little town has so many twisted serial killers!! Did anyone ever think about that?? Maybe there is something in the water or the air?? Maybe Kay should look into it??

But as I stated in my previous reviews I find these books very relaxing to read. They are entertaining and I enjoy trying to guess who the killer is.. On this one I was way off. Never expected it. I guess I would be a lousy cop!

But I hope to see Kay + Elliott in more books! And don't forget Miranda!!

Curiosos? Já leram mais desta série?

What an absolute corker of a read!! This book can easily be read as a standalone but I always think it helps to get a better idea of the main characters and how they fit with each other, when you read a series from the beginning.

Kay has had a request from her ex-husband, Brian. He has been accused of murder and he is desperate to clear his name. Even though the murder he has been accused of is outside of Kay's jurisdiction, she tries to help him, much to the chagrin of Elliot, who didn't even know that Kay had been married in the first place and doesn't see why she wants to help, considering their history.

It is a heck of a story and it involves a small girl who goes missing, murder, lots of lies, and help from an unexpected source.

5 stars from me.

I can't wait to read the next book in the series!

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture.

What an ending!

This book is so good! You will not want to stop reading. There are a lot of twists and turns you won't see coming. Kay and Elliott make a hell of a team. The ending blew me away. I look forward to the next book in this series.

Missing Girl At Frozen Falls me decepciono un poquito.

Copy kindly received via NetGalley for an honest review.

This was my first book by this author, and I was hooked. Both storylines really captured me, and I was very interested in seeing how things would play out for both cases. Kay is a strong character who was determined to find out what had happened to her friend, and then eventually to Holly. Elliott was a great character too and I loved the way he handled the case he was investigating.

I'd definitely read the books prior to this one as I've jumped into this series in the wrong spot, and I really hope to see more of this series in the future. Highly recommend.

Talk about twists and turns!
Missing Girl at Frozen Falls is the fifth book in the Detective Kay Sharp series. Though this can be read as a standalone, I do recommend reading the complete series. There is so much backstory to Detective Kay Sharp that will help you understand her better as you read each book.
Detective Kay Sharp has her hands full when her narcissistic, controlling ex-husband shows up saying he is accused of murder. While she begins her investigation into this, another murder has occurred in her town with a jogger being killed.. Good thing her partner/friend, Elliot, takes on the investigation into this murder.
Where are these cases taking Kay and Elliot?
What a suspenseful, intriguing, action packed police procedural!
Highly recommended series!
Highly recommended author!

It was ok, until it took 6 days for the grandmother, the PD, the US Marshall’s, and the DA to realize the girl was missing after her mom was killed. Come on!

Detective Kay Sharp is back and reluctantly reunited with her ex-husband Brian. Who's been accused of murder and wants Kay to help clear his name.

Only it's not that simple. As the woman he's accused of killing is Kay's ex-best friend Rachel and Brian's current fiancée and Kay doesn't know if she can trust a word out of his mouth.

And things get even worse. When Kay finally learns the truth about Rachel's life, her death and her daughter Holly.

But determined to get answers for Rachel's mum Ciara. Kay puts everything on the line, including her relationship with her partner Elliott. Who has his own investigation to contend with, when a nineteen-year-old girl is reported missing and later found shot and killed at Frozen Falls.

Yet Elliotts investigation soon leads him back to Kay.

And with plenty of twists, shocks and surprises. This was another cracking addition to the Detective Kay Sharp series, and I would definitely recommend it to crime fiction fans everywhere.

I love a book with strong, capable female protagonists, and Kay Sharp who is a female detective fits that role perfectly!

Kay's narcissistic cop ex husband shows up at her precinct begging her for help because he's been arrested for his fiancées murder! Not only his fiancée, she was Kay's former best friend who he cheated on Kay with, so very close to home!

When they realise that his 8 year old daughter Holly is missing too time is of the essence!

Kay was such an awesome character and her partner Elliot ( hopefully, truly more than just at work, if she gives him a proper chance) was a genuinely nice Texan guy. Holly's storyline was definitely tension inducing because she's a child and as a mother her story scared me, but Holly was a brave little girl who showed strength and incredible smarts.

This was a tense, gripping and fast paced book that kept me on the edge of my seat for the duration of reading it.

This is book 5 in the Kay Sharp series, while you don't miss any storyline I always
say to get to know the characters properly- read the rest! And I have to listen to my own advice and catch up!

Thank you netgalley and bookouture for the arc copy in exchange for my honest opinions and thank you bookouture for having me on the blog tour.

The story was incredibly enjoyable, but I’ve felt like this series as a whole has not always felt the most consistent with their characters, or even adding on top of what we already know to our characters. I felt the most strongly about this as I read this book. Kay was married, and we only now learn about her ex in book 5? And after 8 years he can manipulate her and make her cry so easily? I don’t buy it. I wish there was more consistency throughout the whole series. By the end of this book, I was ready to be done.

Detective Kay Sharp is not very happy that her ex husband Brian has come to her for help. He has been accused of murder and he knows that he has to turn himself in, but he wants her help first. This proves very difficult for Kay because it brings back difficult memories from the past and yet she finds that she cannot say no to him. Not only is Kay a cop, but Brian is as well.

If things were not already bad enough, when Kay discovers who it was that Brian is said to have killed, she is completely floored. The murder victim is her former best friend Rachel, Years ago, once Kay became aware that Rachel was sleeping with Brian, their relationship completely fizzled. In fact, a voicemail that was sent to her by Rachel just two days before her death is something that Kay ignored at first. Now she knows that she has to help Brian while working hard to discover who it was that killed Rachel. Kay’s involvement in this case just might endanger her career. She also has to determine how much she can trust Brian.

To say that this case is close to home is an understatement, and her team is not happy that she is working on it nor are the people that Brian works with are happy that Kay is desperately searching for answers. And Kay’s desperation for answers increases greatly when she discovers that Rachel’s daughter Holly ding for Kay as she works to find the killer and what happened to Holly.

What a remarkable addition to an excellent series by Leslie Wolfe. Thanks to intense drama, incredible tension and several twists and turns, this intriguing book had me reading late into the night. Book six in this cannot come too soon.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Leslie just keeps me on the edge of my seat! I did guess - but this plot had me obsessed.
Kay's ex-husband shows up - someone no one has heard of. Brian, a detective at the San Francisco PD, shows up in Kay's town. Begging for help. Accused of killing his fiancée. Kay's best friend from college. Rachel was pregnant with Brian's baby. At their wedding.
So many twists. I loved every single one.

The last installment of the “Detective Kay Sharp” series went out with a bang! This was my personal favorite of the five novels, I found it a bit different than the prior novels which was refreshing. In the past four novels, Kay and Elliot usually begin working the case together, until Elliot gets reassigned to another case. These cases usually end up being connected, with Elliot and Kay teaming up again to connect and solve their cases. This novel was different - Kay takes time off from the Mount Chester Sheriffs Department to go back to San Francisco to help clear her ex-husband’s name, and find her ex-best friend’s killer. Another component is added to the case when Rachel’s (said ex-best friend) 8 year old daughter is discovered to be missing from the murder scene. This is the first time Elliot and Kay aren’t teamed up, but don’t worry, Elliot has his own plot line unfolding in Mount Chester. Will Kay and Elliot’s cases be connected? Elliot is investigating the missing person turned murder investigation of 19 year old dog walker Taylor, who went missing while running early one morning. A seemingly random pop and drop, Elliot struggles to find leads without his partner’s profiling skills. This was a different take on the normal partnership we’ve seen in prior novels, but I really liked having multiple angles of investigation! We have several perspectives but not so many that it is hard to follow.

Kay: Prior to this novel, we really haven’t heard much about Kay’s life in San Francisco other than her excellent work as a profiler in the behavioral analysis unit. This novel gives us great insight into her life before and during her time in the FBI, going all the way back to her college days when she first met Rachel and Bryan. This was great in understanding character development, I almost wish we could’ve seen it before the very last book. Maybe it shows how much her ex-husband gets in her head, but Kay’s profiling abilities and keen instincts that have caught so many killers, seems to be severely lacking here. It was a “come on, Kay! Don’t buy Brian’s bullsh*t!!” moment. Up until now we’ve seen Kay’s unwavering dedication and ability to separate the job from the feelings, but that was missed here. I did like this as a conclusion to Kay’s series, but felt like this was the weakest we’ve seen her out of the five novels.

Elliot: Elliot is separated from Kay when she takes personal time to help out Brian in Sam Fransisco. I was excited to see what Elliot can do without her! Until now, we’ve only seen them teamed up. I really loved Elliot by himself, it showed his determination and grit in solving a seemingly random pop and drop, the hardest crimes to solve. Without Kay’s profiling skills, he must use other investigative techniques to find the killer.

Brian: Brian is a new character, someone we haven’t seen mentioned before, even though he was a huge part of Kay’s life before she moved to Mount Chester. Brian instantly seems slimy and untrustworthy, manipulating Kay and preying on her feelings to convince her to help him. He seems like a typical narcissist with a victim complex. His reasoning for being “targeted” by his fellow detectives in his fiancés murder is a frame job and jealousy, classic victim complex behavior! Somehow this is completely missed by Kay, a supposed renowned behavioral analyst! I didn’t buy Brian’s act for a second!

Overall, it was a good ending to a riveting series. Kay is a stellar, strong female lead. Her intelligence and drive are something to be envious of!

Whew! Now my heart rate can settle back to a normal rhythm! This book was quite a rat race that will leave you breathless and stunned. Leslie Wolfe's latest book in her Detective Kay Sharp series is a slick rocket paced mystery/police procedural. Detective Kay Sharp and her partner, Elliott, have received a call for assistance to search for a missing girl in their small town. Kay's narcissistic ex-husband, Brian, shows up pleading for her help. He has been accused of killing his bride-to-be. Although Kay despises him, she does not believe he could possibly be guilty of murder. She agrees to transport him back to San Francisco to allow him to turn himself in with her as his police escort. Brian believes he is being set up by some rogue cops in his division at the San Francisco PD. So, they go on a road trip. She finally realizes that his wife to be is none other than her former best friend and maid of honor at her wedding to Brian. Shock, hurt and anger are just the beginning of the emotions that Kay experiences when she learns this news. Meanwhile Elliott stays behind to work on their local case, which is now no longer a missing person case. The young woman's body has been found, and she has been brutally murdered.

Brian's case gets more exciting when Kay learns that Rachel and Brian had a little girl, Holly. Brian tells Kay that Holly is with her grandmother. When Kay visits the grandmother, she learns that Holly is missing, and has been missing for more than six days. This lights a fire under Kay once she realizes a young child's life is at stake. She can put aside her distaste for Brian in order to search for his little girl.

The characters in this book and this series are dynamic and engaging. Kay is a fearless woman who will protect those she cares about and the helpless with her very life. She is a hero in every way. I just love Elliott and his gushy love for Kay. He is also a wonderful protector. Now Brian is another matter all together. I wanted to slap him! Narcissism is just one of his horrible traits. Little Holly was my favorite supporting character. This little girl had a strength to survive that most grown women could not measure up to, but you could also feel her pain and helplessness coming off of the pages.

I raced through this book in one afternoon. When I closed the final page, I sat there with my mouth wide open wondering what just happened! This might be my favorite book in this series. Intrigue, suspense, action, police corruption and gangs are just a few things that make this police procedural a must read for those who like to live on the edge! Get ready for the roller coaster ride of your life!

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
